Microsoft Surface in Singapore

Microsoft Surface RT tablet will be released in Singapore by April 5 2013 according to C|Net Asia. If you wanna know where to buy Microsoft Surface in Singapore, the 10.6-inch tablet and its accessories will be sold at Challenger stores.

The Singapore price of 32 GB Microsoft Surface RT is S$ 668 which is slightly more expensive than 16GB Wi-Fi fourth-generation iPad (S$658). The 64 GB version is priced at S$798:
If you buy both the tablet and the Touch Cover keyboard accessory together, Microsoft offers a deal--S$798 for the 32GB version and S$938 for the 64GB. The keyboard accessories are available separately at S$168 for the Touch Cover and S$183 for the Type Cover. You can also purchase a VGA adapter or even an additional power supply at S$58 each.
Source : Microsoft Surface RT available in Singapore from April 5
The main catch of the tablet is that it runs Microsoft Office so documents you prepare in this tablet computer will be 100% compatible with the Microsoft Office on your desktop and laptop. This makes the tablet ideal for users who want the powerful Microsoft applications but does not want the bulk of a notepad. Another advantage of the tablet is its flash support through Microsoft Internet Explorer application.

Microsoft Surface RT users RT version of Microsoft 8 operating system, which is a very different OS than Microsoft (optimized for tablet chip-sets and battery limitations). So your favorite applications such as Photoshop will not readily run on it.

Microsoft Surface RT is at last in Singapore.
When I have heard about Microsoft Surface, I have written an article here named Microsoft Surface: Tablet I was waiting for?  I was exited about finally having a thin and light replacement for my bulky business laptop in most of the cases. But unfortunately, according to C|Net Asia review of the device back in October 2012, people who are looking for a productivity tablet replacement for their bulky laptops like me will be disappointed:
Is Surface worth its price? We think a more useful question is this: If on a business trip, could we replace my laptop with Surface? The short answer is no. The longer answer is also no, but these are the reasons why. The overall sluggishness and bugginess in the interface, especially when using IE 10, is disappointing. Flash support for IE 10 is currently lackluster. Also, more pointedly, IE 10 isn't yet compatible with CNET's content management system (the tool we use to publish). There aren't nearly enough apps to support our entertainment social networking needs when not actually working.
Until Microsoft addresses these issues, Surface isn't quite ready to take over as our one and only device. Your needs may be different, though. Paired with a keyboard cover, Surface is an excellent Office productivity tool (the best in tablet form) and if your entertainment needs don't go far beyond movies, TV shows, music, and the occasional simple game, you're covered there as well. Especially if you like to multitask: The split-screen feature is incredibly useful and cool.

Here is the full statement from Microsoft Singapore released to announce the arrival of Surface to Singapore:

Microsoft today announced that the highly-anticipated Microsoft Surface RT is now available for purchase in Singapore.

Surface RT is designed to set the ultimate stage for Windows RT and represents exceptional value, providing an immersive entertainment experience and a foundation for getting things done. With a starting retail price of S$668, Surface RT will be available at 20 Challenger stores starting today.

“The Surface RT is inspired by Microsoft’s ambition as a services and devices company. Surface RT represents exceptional value with its cutting edge design, uncompromised usability and power features that will enable users to see more, share more and do more. And today we’re really excited to unveil the Surface RT in Singapore,” said Helene Auriol, Managing Director, Microsoft Singapore.

Surface RT is best described as a tablet with some laptop capabilities that weaves productivity and mobility into one beautiful product. It is great for those looking for all-day battery life* and an entertainment-first experience with the ability to still get work done. Additionally, Surface RT will be equipped with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 RT at no additional charge, providing a complete Office experience which include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, and allows users to get work done, anywhere, anytime.

The Surface family of PCs represents an extension of the Windows experience, letting customers work, play and connect with the people who matter to them. Surface lets customers transition between entertainment and creation seamlessly.

It offers an ultra-light durable casing and an integrated kickstand and covers that allow customers to be productive anywhere, as well as a full-sized USB port and microSDXC card slot for additional storage and a 16:9 widescreen high-definition display that make it optimal for viewing and sharing content easily**.

Challenger will be the sole launch retailer for Surface RT, and its flagship store in Funan DigitaLife Mall will see the sale of the first Surface RT in South East Asia today from 7.00pm.

Ben Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Challenger said: “We view Surface RT as a game changer for the mobile computing market in Singapore, and we are confident that it will appeal to our customers who are looking for a great companion device for their lifestyles.”

Advances in Industrial Design

Conceived, designed and engineered entirely by Microsoft employees, and building on the company’s 30-year history manufacturing hardware, Surface represents a unique vision for the seamless expression of entertainment and creativity. Extensive investment in industrial design and real user experience includes the following highlights:

VaporMg: The casing of Surface is created using a unique approach called VaporMg (pronounced Vapor-Mag), a combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch. Starting with magnesium, parts can be molded as thin as .65 mm, thinner than the typical credit card, to create a product that is thin, light and rigid/strong.

Integrated Kickstand: The unique VaporMg approach also enables a built-in kickstand that lets you transition Surface from active use to passive consumption – watching a movie or even using the HD front- or rear-facing video cameras. The kickstand is there when needed, and disappears when not in use, with no extra weight or thickness.

Touch Cover: The 3 mm Touch Cover represents a step forward in human-computer interface. Using a unique pressure-sensitive technology, Touch Cover senses keystrokes as gestures, enabling you to touch type significantly faster than with an on-screen keyboard. It will be available in a selection of vibrant colors. Touch Cover clicks into Surface via a built-in magnetic connector, forming a natural spine like you find on a book, and works as a protective cover. You can also click in a 5 mm-thin Type Cover that adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.

Software takes center stage: Surface sports a full-sized USB port and a 16:9 aspect ratio – the industry standard for HD. It has edges angled at 22 degrees, a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use, letting the hardware fade into the background and the software stand out.

According to Japanese Mac enthusiast site MacFan's claims, the next-generation iPhone, probably be called iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S, will be unveiled on June 20 and the sales will start some time in July. Apple is already expected to launch iPhone 5S in June or July by Apple fans since original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 were released during the June and July period (iPhone 4S and 5 were released in autumn):
A new rumor from Japan echoes previous speculation that the next iPhone -- presumably the "iPhone 5S" -- may be formally announced at a special event on Thursday, June 20. MacFan, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary as a Mac enthusiast site, claims that the new model will go on sale in July, a few weeks after its introduction. According to the report, a "low-cost" version of the iPhone aimed at the larger larger pre-paid market in developing countries such as China and India may debut in August.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is believed to be readying production of its next-generation iPhone during the second quarter of 2013 in preparation for release as early as this summer:
Apple Inc. AAPL +0.51% plans to begin production of a refreshed iPhone similar in size and shape to its current one in the second quarter of the year, according to people familiar with the device's production, teeing up a possible summer launch for the next version of its flagship device.
At the same time, Apple continues to work with its manufacturing partners in Asia on a less expensive iPhone that could be launched as soon as the second half of this year, these people said. The four-inch device likely will use a different casing from the higher-end iPhone. Apple has been working on different color shells for the phone but its plans remain unclear.

In the design and specification side the rumours are very conflicting. Some says the design will not be very different while others expect a radical re-design in current trend towards larger screen machines. It is also rumoured that Apple will release multiple handsets, some of which may be budget models fabricated from plastic and with no physical home button.

According to some reports, Apple has already designed the next two versions of the iPhone while Steve Jobs was alive. San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón was told by an Apple representative that the next two iPhone models "preceded Tim Cook", according to a report in The Examiner.

On the software and hardware side many expect an upgraded iOS 7, A7 processor and a 13-megapixel camera for the iPhone 5S’s iSight setup.

Sri Lanka hotel deals by Agoda during Sinhalese New Year

New Year celebrations in Sri Lanka are full of color and commotion like other other astrologically-determined New Year celebrations in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand’s Songkran or Vietnam’s Tết. Sinhalese New Year is also a perfect time to see the best Sri Lanka has to offer. In 2013, the new year holiday takes place on April 14.

New Year celebration in Sri Lanka is heavily influenced by astrology and the Buddhist calendar, traditionally marking the end of the dry season. In fact, the exact movement of the celestial bodies plays such a large role that the actual start of the New Year is timed down to the minute, and often occurs hours after the previous New Year ‘ends’! In addition, many of the tasks associated with Sinhalese New Year are planned out in advance to begin at auspicious times.

In many cultures around the world the New Year is seen as a time of renewal and in Sri Lanka it is no different. Houses are thoroughly cleaned and ritual lanterns are lit. Music is played using a traditional raban drum made from goat’s hide, temples are full to bursting with people making offerings and receiving blessings from monks, and almost every family, rich or poor, small or large, makes sure that the first meal of the New Year is kiribath, a sweet dish made with rice and coconut milk. On top of all this, there are a huge variety of games that are played – from musical competitions to marbles to hopscotch, badminton and kabadi, which is sort of a cross between tag, American football, and capture the flag.

Oh, and we’d be remiss to leave out firecrackers, which are a huge part of the celebration. One can hear sharp cracks and bangs everywhere they go – sometimes alarmingly loud – from every direction. The local dogs aren’t so keen on the noise, but it sure adds to the revelry.

In 2013, the new year holiday date in Sri Lanka is April 14.
There are various other customs and rituals that depend largely on where in Sri Lanka the celebration is being held, but they all follow the same basic themes. Sri Lankans are very friendly people and will often welcome strangers into the middle of a celebration or game that’s completely unfamiliar. But don’t be shy – join right in and help celebrate!

To get the most out of Sri Lanka during this festive time, take a look at some of the great hotels deals Agoda.com is offering below.

H7N9 Bird flu virus

Update : Authorities in Shanghai said Thursday night that another person has died from H7N9 bird flu, bringing the death toll from the new deadly strain to five around the country. China has confirmed 14 H7N9 cases -- 6 in Shanghai, 4 in Jiangsu, 3 in Zhejiang and 1 in Anhui, in the first known human infections of the lesser-known strain. Of all, 4 died in Shanghai and one died in Zhejiang.

H7N9 bird flu virus, a deadly strain of bird flu which was previously unknown in humans but killed 3 people up to now: 2 in Shanghai and 1 in Jiangsu. The influenza virus have been reported to infect at least nine people. Two deaths have already been reported in Shanghai, while a third person is in a critical condition in nearby Anhui province:

A third person has died from H7N9 bird flu in China as the total number of confirmed cases rose to nine and concerns were raised that the virus might have mutated to infect other animals and humans more readily.
The latest victim was a 38-year-old cook who fell ill early in March while working in the province of Jiangsu, where five of the other cases were found, authorities said. He died in hospital in on 27 March and a positive test for H7N9 flu came back on Wednesday.

The four new cases were reported on Tuesday in Jiangsu province, which borders Anhui to the east and lies north of Shanghai. The Jiangsu health bureau said three women, aged 45, 48 and 32, and a man (83) had been infected. Worryingly, the four cases were in four different cities, and all patients were in “critical condition” and “under emergency treatment”, Xinhua reported.
Source : Fears as more H7N9 cases in China
Among the four patients in Jiangsu only one, a woman of 45, had worked in the market slaughtering poultry, according to Xinhua News Agency. Jiangsu is a province next to Shanghai:
All four fell ill in mid-March and were hospitalized towards the end of the month. The four had reported varying symptoms of dizziness, fever, cough and breathlessness, Xinhua said.

Although Chinese government seems to believe that the virus is not highly contagious, China has a very bad record when it comes to dealing with bad news, which is often covered up by officials fearing it may attract unwanted attention from superiors and damage promotion prospects, despite government efforts to enhance transparency. In 2003, Beijing initially tried to cover up the epidemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which emerged in China and killed about a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide:
Some Chinese have complained that authorities took too long before announcing the deaths on Sunday, though the WHO says the government acted properly. Wu Fan, chief doctor and director general of the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control, told reporters on Tuesday that the government had acted as quickly as it possibly could. "In this situation, to take 20 days to identify and confirm a new virus is already considered short," she said.
Source : New strain of bird flu infects four others in China: Xinhua
These worrying news came just after The World Health Organisation (WHO) played down fears over H7N9 but said it was crucial to find out how the virus infected humans:
"It's the first time that H7N9 was found in humans," the UN health agency's spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told reporters, referring to the deadly strain of avian influenza. "It is of concern to WHO and we will be following this with the health authorities in China to know more. But for the time being, it's only three cases and it has shown, for the time being, no human-to-human transmission," she added.
Source : WHO plays down China bird flu fears
Unlike H5N1 strain, which set off warnings when it began ravaging poultry across Asia in 2003, H7N9 virus appeared to be capable of infecting some birds without causing any noticeable symptoms. No single animal is found infected with the virus yet and how these 9 people are infected is a mystery.
If the latest virus continues to spread in China and beyond "it would be an even bigger problem than with H5N1, in some sense, because with H5N1 you can see evidence of poultry dying" said University of Hong Kong microbiologist Malik Peiris, who also examined the genetic information.
Source : Third death from H7N9 bird flu
Avian influenza, known informally as avian flu or bird flu,  is an illness caused by strains of influenza viruses that have adapted to avian hosts. The highly pathogenic influenza A virus subtype H5N1 is already an emerging avian influenza virus that has been causing global concern as a potential pandemic threat (H5N1 is often referred to simply as "bird flu" or "avian influenza", even though it is only one subtype of avian influenza-causing virus). In January 2004 a major new outbreak of H5N1 surfaced in Vietnam and Thailand's poultry industry, and within weeks spread to ten countries and regions in Asia, including Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and China. In October 2004 researchers discovered H5N1 is far more dangerous than previously believed because waterfowl, especially ducks, were directly spreading the highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 to chickens, crows, pigeons, and other birds and that it was increasing its ability to infect mammals as well. From this point on, avian influenza experts increasingly refer to containment as a strategy that can delay but not prevent a future avian flu pandemic.

In 1918 an unusually deadly influenza pandemic infected 500 million people across the world (not sparing even remote Pacific islands and the Arctic). 50 to 100 million people (3 to 5 percent of the world's population at the time) died making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.

Kiyomi (Gwiyomi) cute dance videos went viral

Kiyomi or Gwiyomi (Chinese 可愛頌) is a new dance craze which has a potential to throw Harlem shake from the throne of internet memes. Kiyomi meaning someone who is cute in Korean slang has become the latest web-viral sensation in several parts of the world such as Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Malaysia.

Kiyomi internet meme was started in February 2013 by Korean teenagers and spread quickly. The dance craze involves teens and children, mostly girls, uploading videos of themselves doing the 50-second dance routine on the YouTube social. Some of these videos have already gathered hundreds of thousands of views. Popular celebrities such as Thai actress Nuengthida 'Noona' Sophon and Tanyares 'Tanya' Ramnarong or popular girl groups such as Four Mod and Neko Jump also have joined the K-Pop trend.

According to The Bangkok Post the series of hand movements in Kiyomi videos was originated by Korean boy band BtoB member Jung Llhoon, and the song, Kiyomi Song, was sung by Korean female artist Hari.

Here you can listen the Hari's Kiyomi song on 18 February. Here is Hari's Facebook page.[1]

The song describes the love of a girl and a boy. The hook can be translated as "1 + 1 = Cute, 2 + 2 = Cute", etc.

In the below Kiyomi video you can see several young Asian woman performing Kiyomi (yes they at last found something to keep them several minutes away from their cell phones). The Gwiyomi video of the young Thai girl at the center has already gathered 680,00++ views since it was uploaded on March 15th.

Not all versions of the song are that cute. The video below, can be named as Kiyomi big boob edition, went viral in Taiwan and labelled as "atrocious".

Here is the Kiyomi Song lyrics by Hari (with English translation).

귀요미송 (Kiyomi Song)
하리(Hari)

초코 머핀 한 조각 시켜놓고
Chocó meopin han jogak sikkyeonohgo
I ordered a piece of chocolate muffin

고소한 우유한잔을 기다려요
Gosohan uyuhanjaneul gidaryeoyo
and I'm waiting for a cup of savory milk

오빠하고 나하고 꼭 마주 앉아서
Oppahago nahago kkok maju anjaseo
my oppa (my older boyfriend)and I sit facing each other

서로 손바닥 위에 예쁜 낙서를 하죠
Seoro sonbadak wie yeoppeun nakseoreul hajyo
and we doodle in eachother's hands

한눈 팔지마 누가 뭐래도 내꺼 (내꺼)
Hannun paljima nuga mworaedo naekkeo ( naekko)
dont look at other women you're mine

다른 여자랑 말도 섞지마 난 니꺼 (난 니꺼)
Dareun yeojarang maldo seokjima nan nikkeo ( nan nikkeo)
dont talk with other women im yours

새끼 손가락 걸고 꼭 약속해줘요
Saekgi songarak geolgo kkok yaksokhaejwoyo
please pinky swear and promise me

절대 나 혼자 내버려 두지 않기로
Jeldae na honja naeberyeo duji anhgiro
that you'll never leave me alone

1더하기1은 귀요미

The Phantom Of The Opera in Singapore

The world’s most successful and longest-running show on Broadway – THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is returning to Singapore. The award-winning musical is set to take Singapore by storm when the show opens on 16 July for a strictly limited season at The MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands. Canon is the presenting sponsor of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, continuing its support for top quality musicals staged in Singapore.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed masterpiece is now enjoying its 27th year on the West End
stage, and its 26th year on Broadway, and continues to play to full houses around the world. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has been seen by over 130 million people worldwide, in more than 27 countries, has grossed more than US$5.6 billion and has won over 50 major theatre awards.

Producer Kerry Comerford of The Really Useful Group said “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is an
exceptionally unique musical for so many reasons, and sits in a class of its own. It has received incredible acclaim over the years, and to this day remains unrivalled by other musicals in its world-wide successes.”

“This touring production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is as fine as any version you might see on the West End or Broadway - it is the same exquisite design that the audience is familiar with, and we invest
a great deal to ensure it is of the highest standards. Our stellar cast assembles the industry’s best performers, with members coming from leading entertainment destinations of the world; UK, USA, Europe, Australia and South Africa. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has enjoyed huge success throughout the Asia-Pacific region, having experienced a sold-out season in Singapore in 2007 as well as Shanghai and Seoul, and I am confident that audiences in Singapore will welcome the return of this legendary musical.”

The Chief Executive of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, James Cundall, who is presenting THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in Singapore in conjunction with BASE Entertainment Asia, said “It is an enthralling show which epitomizes all that is great about musical theatre – an unbelievable score, a powerful story, lavish sets and costumes, and most importantly, an unforgettable experience. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a worldwide sensation which will take Singapore audiences on a spectacular journey.”

Mr. George Tanasijevich, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marina Bay Sands said, “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a timeless Broadway classic. We are proud that one of the most respected musicals of all time joins the league of the other successful Broadway style shows we have brought to Singapore.”

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of a young soprano - Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.

With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, jaw-dropping scenery, breathtaking special effects and more than 230 costumes by international designer, the late Maria Björnson, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and stirring music, including “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Music of the Night”, “Angel of Music” and “All I Ask of You”.The timeless, romantic and much-loved musical has been honoured with seven prestigious New York Tony Awards including Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards and three Olivier Awards.

The film of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was released in 2004 and has thrilled cinema-goers around
the world, and a Las Vegas spectacular now in its sixth year continues to enthral audiences. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is based upon the novel Le Fantome De L’Opera by Gaston Leroux. The original London production was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is produced in Singapore by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, David Atkins Enterprises, and Base Entertainment in association with The Really Useful Group.
