Turkish Restaurants in Singapore

If you are looking for Turkish food in Singapore, you can find some good options around Arab Street and Bugis Area but you also have some options outside these centers. Do not expect the rich menus you can find in countries like USA though, the menu is mostly kebab, doner kebab, kofte and pide based (these are also Turkish food but does not reflect the whole picture at all) and you can hardly find grilled fish, vegetarian Turkish food ( like bean based food) or even the classic Turkish dumpling Manti. Almost all of these restaurants are also halal certified so you will not find alcoholic beverages (with the exception of Deli Turk where you can taste Turkish food with wine or beer like you can do in Turkey).

Here I have tried to list the Turkish Restaurants in Singapore. If you think any restaurant or establishment is left out let us know.

Sofra Turkish Cafe & Restaurant
#02-42/43/44, Shaw Towers, 100 Beach Road, 189702

Centrally located on Beach Road in Shaw Towers, Sofra Turkish Cafe & Restaurant offers a rich menu from Turkish Cuisine with nice ambiance and good service. Highly popular, this establishment is serving Turkish food in Singapore since 2000. It has also a small mini shop where you can buy Turkish food ingredients and Turkish products such as olive oil, beans, Turkish cheese and some Turkish deserts. Try the Lahmacun (which is served on Mondays and Thursdays), Iskender Kebab.

Deli Turk Turkish Cuisine
162 Upper East Coast Road, 455259

There used to be a very popular Deli Turk Turkish Restaurant in Suntec City Tower 4 and this Deli Turk in Upper East Coast Road is a spin off that restaurant. If you are in the east and want to try out Turkish food, this is a nice option. Unlike many other Turkish restaurants, Deli Turk Turkish Cuisine offers alcoholic beverages so you can have the unique experience of drinking your wine, beer or spirit with Turkish food. Try the national drink of Turkey, Raki and national beer of Turkey, Efes Beer (Pilsener) and also several wine options.

Turkish Restaurant in Singapore

Turkish Kebab House
#B1-105, Suntec City Mall, 3 Temasek Boulevard, 038985

This small bufe in Suntec City Mall is a place where I regularly go because I visit Suntec City a lot and the food here is very good. Their doner kebab is very good and you can also have a few other Turkish food there.

Arkadas Cafe
 #03-02, Fusionopolis, 1 Fusionopolis Way, 138632

Opened by a Turk after serving 22 years in Turkish Embassy in Singapore as a chef for ambassadors, Arkadas Cafe is definitely in a location which is not central but a visit to this small and nice Turkish restaurant is rewarding. Although main course is mostly limited to kebab and kofte, don't forget to try the houmus with pita bread which is really nicely done.

Alaturka Mediterranean & Turkish Restaurant
16 Bussorah Street, 199437

Most people head to Arab Street to eat Turkish or Middle Eastern food and Alaturka is one of the popular Turkish restaurants in the vicinity.

Cafe Le Caire
#01-01, 39 Arab Street, 199736

If you like Middle Eastern / Turkish Food, Cafe Le Caire is one of the good alternatives in the Arab Street vicinity.

Top 10 Things to Do in Singapore

My friend Dilek recently visited Singapore before flying to Thailand for a Bangkok and Phuket trip. I requested her to compile a to-do-list in Singapore and here is what she has written:

Singapore attracts many visitors, travelers and tourists into the region combining the skyscrapers and subways of a modern, affluent city with a tropical climate, with tasty food, and good shopping malls. The culture of Singapore is composed of mainly Chinese, Indian, British, and Malay cultures. There are many things you can do in Singapore. During your first visit, you can start with these top 10 things to do in Singapore.

3. Going to Night Safari

The Night Safari is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Singapore. Actually it is the world’s first nocturnal zoo.(Nocturnality is an animal behavior characterized by activity during the night and sleeping during the day.) The 40-hectare park houses 1,040 animals representing 120 species, of which 29% are threatened species. The length of visit recommended is 2-3 hours. I’m sure you will enjoy your experience in Chinatown since it is full of many little shops selling everything from plastic Buddhas to the products you name it.  Furthermore, you can purchase souvenirs from Chinatown because it is where the cheapest souvenirs are. Cool De Sac Singapore Indoor Playground, Suntec City Mall

Cool de-sac is a place in Suntec City where your toddlers and kids can play in relatively large indoor parks while you are enjoying a meal. We were planning to visit there for a while but we could only find chance to go there today.

Cool de sac Singapore offers an indoor playground for kids and a nice place to hang-out for the adults. Cool de-sac is in Suntec City Mall, near the overhead bridge connecting Suntec City and Marina Square Shopping center. Enterance fee in the weekend is 13 SGD per toddler between 7 months and 35 months and 26 SGD for kids over 3 years old. In weekdays, it is 10 SGD and 20 SGD. For infants below 7 months, enterance is free. 1 child entitles 2 adult entries. The place is open from 10 AM to 10 PM and these prices for unlimited access to the indoor playground for a day.

One of the most important thing for me is a separate playgrounds for older kids and young toddlers. My daughter is 16 months old and in playgrounds it is quite common that an 4+ years old hits her accidentally while running wildly around. Cool de-sac has a separate toddler area which is quite rich enough. The only problem is that this area is frequently visited by 5+ years olds who again run around and jumps on the kids so you still need to keep a good eye on your young one. And the management in Cool de-sac should do more to prevent them to go in or at least jump around in the toddler area.

The playground for toddlers is named Tots. The area is for kids under 3 years of age. Crawling babies and toddlers can enjoy playing with toys or in bubble pools.

Play Area is a large and secure area for kids aged 3 years to 12 years. There are some nice slides and tunnels. There is also another area for older kids named Tree House. These tree houses are connected with a suspended bridge and is a quite fun place for the kids.

Other than these play areas there are sections for video games, arts and dressing up (called backstage).

If you are planning to visit the place frequently, you can have a Cool Pass for $188 which entitles you for 10 entries within 6 months and discounts on food and purchased items. There is also an annual pass for 508 SGD which entitles you for unlimited access for 12 months and 20% discount on food, items and birthday parties.

The Trick Eye Museum at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)

The Trick Eye Museum at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is opening its doors to visitors today on June 8th 2014. And from today till June 22, ticket prices for tickets you buy at the museum's ticketing counter will be 50% discounted at $25 for adults and $20 for children and seniors.

This is the first and only overseas outlet of the Trick Eye Museum in Seoul, South Korea which was first opened to public in December 2010. The Trick Eye Museum Singapore features six theme zones (Love, Circus, Masterpiece, Safari, Fairytale and Adventure), with 80 three-dimensional paintings and optical illusion masterpieces.

The Seoul museum is located at the centre of Seoul's nouveau art hub, Hongdae, where various popular cultural events attract a stream of young art lovers. All works in Trickeye museum create illusions which allow the guests to perceive a three-dimensional object or scene. Featuring a good collection of 2D & 3D art and sculptures, the works are specially designed for photo opportunities. Consequently, these radical forms of art which require the active participation of the viewers became a draw for tourists. Trickeye has seen grown to be one of the best must-visit attractions for tourists visiting Korea.

Around 80 per cent of the exhibits in  The Trick Eye Museum at Resorts World Sentosa has not been seen in Korea says Sally Liang, Marketing Manager of Trick Eye Museum Singapore. "The Merlion piece here is one of the more unique ones created for the Trick Eye Museum Singapore."

The Trick Eye Museum at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)

Mr Goh Chye Boon, executive vice-president of Resort Operations at RWS, said the museum is a great place for families to visit. He urged visitors to not just take photos, but to join in and interact with the exhibit as it will make the experience much more memorable.

The museum is suitable for young children with adult supervision, and even the elderly. Some exhibits allow multiple people to pose on it and the whole museum can hold up to 300 people at one time.
The exhibition is the main attraction on The Korean Strip, a mini-Korean themed 100-metre stretch. It is accessible via The Waterfront. It is located next to the Malaysian Street Food and Aston's Restaurant.

The album came a decade after its predecessor, Hellbilly Deluxe, the album that established Zombie as a solo artist after the breakup of multi-platinum group White Zombie. That triple-platinum album also yielded a string of successful radio singles, namely “Dragula” “Superbeast” and “Living Dead Girl,” which dominated the airwaves.

In addition to working on his films, ROB ZOMBIE also dominated the touring world together with his band of maniacs – John 5/guitar, Piggy D/bass and drummer Ginger Fish, blowing away audiences on the road with Megadeth, then with Marilyn Manson for the “Twins of Evil Tour.” When it comes to any artistic feat or endeavor, leave it to Rob Zombie to accomplish what appears on paper to be nearly impossible.

The members of KORN built an immortal bond back in 1993 the first time that Jonathan Davis, James "Munky" Shaffer, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu, and Brian "Head" Welch decided to make music as a unit. They shed blood, sweat, and tears in the studio and on stage, fashioning an undeniable, unsettling, and unique sound that would permanently alter the course of rock music. After six seminal releases, two Grammy Award wins, countless sold out shows, and eventually selling 35 million albums worldwide, Head left the group in 2004 to face down the demons of addiction on his own. KORN soldiered on, permanently adding drummer Ray Luzier to the fold in 2007 and releasing four more epic full-length releases, most recently 2011's groundbreaking dubstep-metal hybrid The Path of Totality. In 2012, a triumphant and tear-filled reunion happened on stage as the group headlined the Carolina Rebellion festival with Head reprising his legendary part on "Blind." The initial bond came back into focus, but it was time to change the game again. It was time for their eleventh studio album The Paradigm Shift. Recorded with producer Don Gilmore [Linkin Park], it melds the group's ever-present spirit of innovation with their signature metallic catharsis, paving the way for the future yet again.

ALTER BRIDGE was formed in 2004 when three ex-members of Creed joined forces with former Mayfield Four front man & Slash collaborator Myles Kennedy.

The band's gold-certified debut album "One Day Remains" spawned three singles as well as the track "Metalingus " which was adopted by WWE superstar Edge as his theme song. A second album "Blackbird " was released in 2007 to critical acclaim, resulting in 2 hit singles "Rise Today" and "Watch Over You", the latter of which debuting at #10 on the VH1 top 20 music video countdown.

Following up to their success, their third studio release "AB III " was released in 2009 to many positive reviews and spawned "Isolation " their most successful single to date. in 2010, AB III reached #1 rock album on iTunes in the United States.

Armed with their most recent album "Fortress " released in August 2013, ALTER BRIDGE embarked on a headline UK tour in October, and will be be playing in Australia's Soundwave Festival 2014. Alter Bridge will also release a box set titled Alter Bridge X to commemorate the band's 10th anniversary.

After his departure from Metallica in 2001, former bassist JASON NEWSTED has embarked on a number of projects & collaborations. "Echobrain" was the first of such projects, which also resulted in Jason Newsted's departure from Metallica after over 14 years with the band due to tensions between the band members - namely James Hetfield was quoted as saying "When someone does a side project, it takes away the strength of Metallica ".

Soon after recording and funding 3 albums with Echobrain, JASON NEWSTED then joined Canadian thrash metal band Voivod for a period of time as their studio bassist in 2002. Jason Newsted joined Ozzy Osbourne's band in Ozzfest 2003, replacing Robert Trujillo (who replaced him in Metallica).

JASON NEWSTED was present and played alongside with Metallica in the band's induction ceremony to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2009, as he had co-written three songs with them. It was his first performance with the band in over a decade, and both Robert Trujillo and himself played onstage at the same time.

In December 2012, JASON NEWSTED formed the band NEWSTED as his new project, and their debut album "Heavy Metal Music" was released in August 2013 to generally positive reviews.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH has released three consecutive RIAA gold certified albums for sales exceeding 500,000 copies. The success of The Way of The Fist (2007), War Is The Answer (2009) and American Capitalist (2011), which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard charts in October, 2011, exhibit the band as one of the few in the rock genre to consistently see significant sales both digitally and physically. The band’s ten consecutive Top 10 radio hits - including 2012′s #1 hit “Coming Down – have spawned cumulative single sales of over 4.2 million. Going back to “The Bleeding” in the spring of 2008, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH has consistently been one of the most heavily played bands at rock radio.

Formed in 2006, BLACK VEIL BRIDES originally came together in Cincinnati, Ohio. Primarily the brainchild of vocalist Andy Six, the band combines cathartic metalcore/screamo with a dark, gothic image to set it apart from its contemporaries. In their first couple of years together, BLACK VEIL BRIDES went through a number of lineup changes while they gained attention from labels with two EPs, releasing Sex & Hollywood in 2007 and Never Give In in 2008. The band eventually relocated to Los Angeles, settling on a lineup and beginning work on its full-length debut.

Bringing together guitarist Jinxx (formerly of the Dreaming), guitarist Jake Pitts, bassist Ashley Purdy, and drummer Sandra Alvarenga, the band began to refine its image and sound, touring with groups like Eyes Set to Kill and From First to Last. In 2010 they released their debut, We Stitch These Wounds, on Standby Records. Later that year, Alvarenga left the band and was replaced by drummer Christian "CC" Coma, who made his debut with the band on 2011's Set the World on Fire, which was released on Lava Records. For their third release, Black Veil Brides channeled their gothic image to create the conceptual punk rock opera Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones, which was released in early 2013.

Don’t miss one of the most hard hitting rock lineups ever in Singapore with ROB ZOMBIE, KORN, ALTER BRIDGE, NEWSTED, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH & BLACK VEIL BRIDES!

Singapore International Jazz Festival 2014

The Singapore International Jazz Festival 2014 a.k.a Sing Jazz is set to kick off 27 February through 2 March 2014 at Marina Bay Sands. Featuring jazz and R&B legends Jamie Cullum, Natalie Cole, James Morrison, India Arie and Incognito, together with upcoming international stars such as Gregory Porter, Allen Stone and Dirty Loops, all performing alongside a host of regional and local jazz icons, the likes of Glenn Fredly, Jeremy Monteiro, Melissa Tham and Alemay Fernandez, Sing Jazz is slated to be Singapore’s largest ever jazz and jazz-influenced music festival.

Organised by Orbis Festival Productions, in partnership with Marina Bay Sands (the Official Venue
Partner) and the Java International Jazz Festival (‘Java Jazz’), Sing Jazz is set to invigorate the local jazz and music scene, boosting the following for this most creative and inspiring of live music forms, while at
the same time helping to nurture and encourage the development of home-grown jazz talent.

The Festival kicks off with Jamie Cullum headlining an opening gala performance on 27 February at the Grand Theatre. This will be followed by three days of back-to-back performances by some of the biggest
names in jazz and R&B, at the main stage of the outdoor Event Plaza. Meanwhile, satellite stages situated throughout the destination will showcase the wealth of regional and local talent, and provide the opportunity for jamming late into the night, so capturing the true essence of live jazz.

“The music scene in Singapore is refreshingly eclectic,” says David Lyndon Smith, Artistic Director of Orbis Festival Productions and professional orchestral musician himself. “The community of jazz-lovers here has been growing steadily, evident from the increased following and appreciation of live jazz over recent years. Our aim is for Sing Jazz to further energise this process and establish itself as Singapore’s definitive platform for the exposition of jazz in all its forms, showcasing both the music and its exponents who, for their spontaneous creativity, must surely rank among the most talented of musical artists”.

The Festival also takes seriously its social and developmental mission of nurturing emerging jazz talent in Singapore and the region. Sing Jazz will host clinics led by Festival artists, and facilitate an exchange of local talent with its counterpart festival, Java Jazz. It will also pledge $1 from each commercial ticket sale towards the Foundation of Arts & Social Enterprise’s on-going training and grooming of our cadre of up-and-coming jazz musicians. Moreover, Orbis Festival Productions is committed to founding a residential ‘Jazz Academy’ that will see leading exponents of the art tutoring and mentoring aspiring young jazz artists.

“Marina Bay Sands in collaboration with Orbis Festival Productions is excited to present Sing Jazz with
renowned international jazz artists. Our unique and versatile property will provide the perfect setting for the diverse international, regional and local talent appearing at Sing Jazz,” added Karen Mosley, Executive Director of Entertainment at Marina Bay Sands.

“Over the years, Singapore has risen to prominence as a regional centre of excellence in the performing arts”, says Mr. Michael Tay, Executive Director for the Foundation of the Arts & Social Enterprise. “Where jazz is concerned, we do have some home-grown talent who have gained international recognition and contribute actively to an increasingly vibrant jazz scene here - – our jazz 'ecosystem'. However, there is much more to be done. I applaud Sing Jazz’s social mission, to help cultivate our pool of local jazz artists through its contribution to the Foundation, enabling jazz scholarships for our promising talent and support for their participation at festivals around the world. This is a pioneering step, one that we hope will help define Singapore as a nucleus for jazz in Asia, and therefore one on which the Foundation is delighted to collaborate.”

“Java Jazz already attracts well over 100,000 attendees each year to Indonesia. Together with Sing Jazz, we intend to make SE Asia the world’s premiere jazz destination,” says Peter Gontha of Java Jazz. “Our distinctive offerings enable us to showcase international and regional jazz at its very best, albeit with a uniquely Asian vibe.”

Tickets for Sing Jazz are on sale from Saturday, 30 November 2013. Audiences will be treated to a concert at Marina Bay Sands Grand Theatre on 29 November by British acid jazz icons Incognito, who will also return to perform among the other award-winning artists on the stages of Sing Jazz 2014 in February.

My Fair Lady Musical in Singapore

Henry Higgins, Eliza Doolittle and the rest of the iconic characters from MY FAIR LADY will transform the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands to 1912 London in this Broadway Classic. Hailed as the standard by which all other musicals are judged, BASE Entertainment Asia brings this international treasure, upon which the classic 1964 Audrey Hepburn movie was based, to Singapore on February 11 2014 for a limited season. Tickets are now on sale.

Based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 play Pygmalion, MY FAIR LADY will transport audiences to Edwardian London and one of the most beautiful stories ever told about language and clash of cultures. It follows the relationship between Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, and the snobbish and misogynistic Professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, who wagers that he can turn Eliza into a “proper lady’ in three months’ time. Those who experience MY FAIR LADY will be enchanted by this tale of triumph of the human spirit, as well as the love story that emerges between two unlikely heroes, ultimately joined together by their fascination with the English language.

When the show first opened on Broadway in 1956, starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, critics described it a “legendary” and “one of the greatest musicals of the century.” MY FAIR LADY went on to win six TONY Awards, and, in 1961, became the longest-running production in Broadway history at that time.

MY FAIR LADY features book and lyrics by Alan Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, and includes the classic songs “The Rain In Spain,” Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “Get Me To The Church On Time.” Often called “the perfect musical,” MY FAIR LADY is an unforgettable experience with beautiful music and exquisite costumes that will remind theatre-goers as to why musical theatre was born.

The National Tour of MY FAIR LADY features Aurora Florence as Eliza Doolittle; Chris Carsten as Henry Higgins; Daniel Cardenes as Freddy Eynsford-Hill; Ricard Springle as Colonel Pickering; and Arthur Wise as Alfred P. Doolittle.

Tickets for My Fair Lady Musical starts from $95 excluding the booking fee of SGD$3 per ticket.
