4-Star Singapore hotel rooms are getting cheaper

Singapore hotel room prices are falling due to decreased number of tourist arrivals and increasing number of hotel rooms coming in Singapore market. This price fall is reflected in a study by online travel site TripAdvisor. The study found out that Singapore 4-Star hotel prices are now the 11th more expensive in the world, improved from 9th position of last year.

TripAdvisor Annual TripIndex Room Service report, released in April 2015, compared the hotel room service items (a club sandwich, dry cleaning one shirt and refreshments from the mini bar) and a one-night, four star hotel stays across 48 destinations.

According to the findings, a club sandwich costs $25.91 in a 4-Star Singapore hotel. A bottle of water from the mini bar costs $8.01 and a mini bottle of vodka costs $18.36. A can of cola costs $7.05 and a packet of peanuts costs $6.7. And on average, dry cleaning a shirt costs $16.96. (All these costs can be minimized by staying in a hotel near a shopping mall or at least a 7-11 outlet).

And on average, a 4-Star Singapore hotel room price is $264.35 for a one-night stay (you can always find cheaper on a room price comparison site like hotelscombined).

According to the survey, the best value for money destination is Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. An average total cost of above in a 4-Star Sofia hotel room price is only $133.86. The most expensive destination is New York in USA where the same items in total costs $580.51!

As total number of hotel rooms increased and the number of tourists arriving to Singapore is falling, expect better 4-Star hotel room deals in coming months.

Cheaper hotels in Singapore due to hotel room glut

Singapore hotels are not cheap and are quite expensive in Asian standards. According to a report by Hotels.com, Singapore hotels were most expensive in Asia and were quite expensive compared to the first decade of 2000s. Well that was back in 2012 and thanks to a surge in the number of hotel rooms and reduced demand from China for Singapore holidays (South East Asia holidays specifically) are making Singapore hotel rooms cheaper.

According to Vikram Malhi, managing director of online travel agent Expedia Asia, tour operators are able to get up to 30% discount on hotel stays in Singapore recently. After MH370 tragedy and the political unrest in Thailand, passenger traffic from China to both countries were badly effected. Since Singapore is usually a stop-over for Malaysia tours, Thailand tours or Malaysia/Thailand tours, Singapore saw declining tourist numbers from China. According to the numbers released by Singapore Tourism Board, visitor arrivals in Singapore from China in the first five months of 2014 fell by 27.4 percent year on year.

And the political unrest in Thailand is also taking its toll on global demand for this popular tourist destination. According to indiatimes.com, Thailand was ranked the most preferred overseas destination for Indian tourists until this year and was taken over by Dubai after the political unrest.

You can see some clues about the shape of the hotels in Singapore in the numbers announced by Far East Hospitality Trust, a Singapore-focused hotel and serviced residence property trust. "The average occupancy at the hotels under the Far East Hospitality Trust, including Rendezvous Hotel and Village Hotel Albert Court, dropped to 80.1 percent in the quarter ended June 30, compared with 87.7 percent in the same period a year ago. The average daily rate also dipped to 188 Singapore dollars ( 150.4 U.S. dollars) from 191 Singapore dollars (152.8 U.S. dollars) a year ago."

Rendezvous Hotel Singapore
Far East Hospitality Trust also adds two factors to the reason in the declining demand for Singapore hotel rooms : companies are not spending for hotels due to global macro economic uncertainties and the imposition of a new restriction by the Chinese government on shopping tours.

Still, glut does not seem to stop growth in Singapore hotel industry (so can expect more glut?). Singapore's Today Newspaper was not surprisingly drawing a more cheerful picture for the near future as it said the hotel industry in Singapore should continue to enjoy healthy demand despite rising room rates and strong competition, as the Republic’s existing and coming attractions are set to draw more regional tourists.

Studio M Hotel Singapore

One of the best locations in Singapore to stay is Singapore's riverside, especially a little deep into Robertson Quay. The location offers a quite neighborhood yet with a nice nightlife, riverside dining options and bars. There are several nice hotels in the area offering a central location with below 200 SGD per night prices.

Studio M Hotel on Nanson Road, the first fully loft-inspired Singapore hotel, is such riverside hotel. It is ideal for business travelers, leisure travelers without kids and Singapore residents looking for a unique staycation experience. The duplex style Studio and Premier lofts at Studio M Hotel Singapore offers a unique hotel stay.At the corner on each level of Studio M Hotel are Executive Lofts offering absolute privacy with a certain sense of lifestyle. Its hallmark features are its exceptional full 3-metre height bay windows at the front and corner with views of the city skyline and unique privileges to enjoy throughout your stay at Studio M Hotel Singapore.

The loft style room is quite unique. When you first enter the room it will feel a little small (unfortunately small rooms are a norm even in 5-star hotels in Singapore). But the upstair level  (which is the bed area) is cosy and comfortable. The layout of the room is well deigned to maximize the use of the space. But one warning, the stairs to the bed are steep and narrow so if you have limited mobility, kids with you or you are pregnant, the loft rooms are not for you.

Studio M Hotel is a very suitable hotel for business travelers since it is a very short taxi ride away from Singapore's Central Business District. The location is almost half way between Singapore's business center and Orchard Road.

The hotel is new (opened in 2010) and this is quite important because some old but reputable hotels may feel what they are "old". Here, the rooms, amenities and facilities are new and cosy.

Studio M Hotel is also a popular Singapore staycation hotel. The hotel offers several staycation packages like Premier Loft - Weekends Away and Studio Loft - Weekends Away. Surrounding area is quite nice for a staycation especially the riverside from Robertson Quay to Clarke Quay.

For the current rates, reviews of the hotel, deals and booking refer to hotels Studio M Hotel hotelscombined page.

Carlton City Hotel Singapore

If you are looking for a business hotel in Singapore in the Central Business District (CBD), you now have one more option. The brand new Carlton City Hotel Singapore located just 2 minutes walk away from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station is completed and opened its doors in August 2013 for business executives who would like to stay in a central location in Singapore.

The 29-storey Carlton City Hotel Singapore offers 386 hotel rooms across 4 categories : Deluxe Room, Executive Room, Carlton Club room and Carlton Suite.  the hotel also offers Carlton Club Lounge on level 28th, quite literally the height of luxury with sweeping views of Singapore from its lofty perch. Besides the stunning spectacle comprising the ever changing city skyline and elegantly preserved old shop houses, the Club offers a perfect retreat from a busy schedule. The location is unbeatable especially for business executives. Positioned as an International Business Hotel, it is located in the business district and 1 MRT station away from Singapore's Raffles Place.

The hotel also offers a very convenient location for tourists near Chinatown and MRT Green Line. With its modern and contemporary design, the hotel offers simple but comfortable stay. It is designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates and is the second property of the Carlton brand. Timeless and contemporary, Carlton City is a business hotel that reflects the same sense of tradition and excellence that is exemplified by the first hotel.

As a new hotel, everything in the room and facilities are new. This is important because a lot of business hotels in Singapore are quite old and you may end up staying in a small aging room with aging furniture if you do not chose a new or upgraded hotel.

With Carlton City Hotel Singapore there are now 2 Carlton Hotels in Singapore. The other one, Carlton Hotel Singapore is on Bras Basah Road and do not forget to clearly mention your taxi driver the name of the hotel otherwise you can end up in the older one.

Here you can find Carlton City Hotel Singapore reviews. For deals, discounts and booking visit Carlton City Hotel Singapore Agoda page.

Budget Hotels and Hostels for F1 Singapore 2013 Grand Prix

The 2013 Singapore Formula One (F1) Grand Prix scheduled to take place from 20 to 22 September 2013 will be Asia’s most anticipated and biggest motor-sports event of the year. As the first and only night street race in the F1 Championship draws near, demand for hotels are expected to rev up a few notches.

For the first time, the upcoming F1 Singapore 2013 Grand Prix race event will stage a Closing Concert headlined by Canadian pop-sensation Justin Bieber and Owl City. This year’s entertainment highlights also include a stellar line-up of mega-stars such as Rihanna, Big Bang (Korea), The Killers and Tom Jones.

Against such backdrop, finding accommodation in Singapore over the F1 race weekend can be a challenge. High demand from both motorsports enthusiasts and concert goers will drive up hotel room rates. During this F1 season, it will not come as a surprise that most hotels in Singapore may charge up to two times the usual rates.

Danny Lee, founder of BudgetHotels.sg, commented: “With the rates of trackside hotels doubling or even tripling during the F1 season, some F1 fans maybe priced out of action. For this reason, visitors can actually consider budget hotels and hostels that are located near the F1 racetrack. These cheaper accommodation options are also within easy reach of MRT train stations, shops and eateries. However, I do strongly advise racing fans to book early as these cheaper rooms get snapped up pretty fast.”

With less than four weeks to the world’s first F1 night race, Singapore budget hotel
specialist urges F1 racing fans to book their hotel stay in Singapore early.
To help cost-conscious F1 and non F1 fans, BudgetHotels.sg has curate a list of recommended budget hotels and hostels near the F1 circuit in Singapore.

The budget hotels listed are mostly located in downtown Bugis district and are within 10 to 15-minute walk or one train stop to race venues such as Gates 3, 7 and the Stamford Grandstand. The recommended boutique hostels are also mostly located in Bugis area and Clarke Quay that is about 15-minute walk to Gate 5, Turns 12 and 13 of the street circuit. The hostels come with amenities such as free WiFi and personal locker, and some even come with female-only sections.

Boutique Capsule Hotel in Singapore - The Pod

Singapore now has one more affordable hotel option - The Pod, a boutique capsule hotel on Beach Road (Bugis), has opened. The hotel, which offers 83 capsules to its guests with personalized concierge services and a range of complimentary services such as dry-cleaning and laundry service, hot buffet breakfast with Nespresso coffee, use of business suites, high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity and more.

This new Singapore budget hotel is catering to those travelers who are tight on budget but still want to enjoy the comforts and quality synonymous with a hotel says Mr. Seetoh Kum Loon, co-founder of The Pod Singapore. “Currently, in Singapore, travellers can choose to either stay at a hotel and pay a little more, or opt for the budget backpacker hostels, potentially compromising on comfort, service and amenities. Here at The Pod, we want to give travellers the best of both worlds by offering them the premium amenities, services, look, and feel of a boutique hotel,  along with the communal and affordable nature of a hostel. The Pod was conceptualised to serve this gap in the market.”

Each Pod in The Pod Capsule Hotel comes with a personal locker below the Pod with keycard access, two pillows, personal reading light, fold-down table for laptop use or writing, international power socket, hangers, and a clothes rack.  Adding a touch of luxury, each Pod also comes with 300 thread-count cotton sateen sheets and a fluffy duvet. Pull-down blinds in each Pod provide guests with added privacy.

The emphasis on design and privacy is extended into the washrooms and vanity area. A long marble common vanity against a mirrored wall provides guests with easy access to a quick wash or touch up. Separate self-contained bathrooms  comprising a shower separated from the water closet and sink by a glass screen enable guests to enjoy the comforts of a private toilet within a shared washroom.

There are two Single Pod types in the hotel: front-entry Pod providing more privacy and side-entry Pods offering more locker space. for couples or very closed budget friends, there is the bigger and roomier Queen Pod which accommodates up to two guests. For female travelers, there are also female-only Pods for added privacy.

The Pod Boutique Capsule Hotel Singapore
The Pods in The Pod Boutique Capsule Hotel Singapore
In Singapore's super expensive hotel environment, these budget hotels are also appealing to business travelers for short stays. The Pod Capsule Hotel offers complimentary business suites which come with laptops, telephones with free local calls, Wi-Fi connectivity and printing/scanning services.

The location of The Pod is also quite appealing. It is located at 289 Beach Road, Bugis, very near to Arab Street and walking distance away from Bugis MRT Station.

The capsule prices begin from S$78 for Single Pods and S$98 for Queen Pods.

Bugis is the most popular accommodation choice for cost-conscious travelers

Room bookings for Bugis have overtaken other districts according to Singapore budget hotel specialist BudgetHotels.sg.

When choosing a place to stay, tourists visiting Singapore have traditionally opted for historical favorites like Chinatown and Little India, but that preference is rapidly changing in favor of budget hotels in Bugis, especially those near Bugis MRT station, says Danny Lee, founder of BudgetHotels.sg.

The Singapore budget hotel specialist has observed a 38% spike in room bookings through its portal for hotels in the Bugis area in recent years, a trend that looks set to keep increasing. While there are many budget hotels in the Bugis area, prices are not necessarily cheaper than those of Little India and Chinatown, suggesting that other factors are creating the draw.

“There’s a buzz about Bugis,” notes Lee, “and it offers some of everything.” Indeed, Bugis has one of the most fascinating histories of the downtown districts, being once a settlement for immigrants, then an infamous red-light rendezvous point for transvestites, before transforming into the modern and urban playground of the young and trendy that it is today. Yet it retains its personality in its eclectic mix of old churches, crowded street-bazaars and high rise mall complexes.

Another factor, Lee suggests, could be the proximity to the Formula One racing track. Bugis is geographically situated just outside the Marina Bay Street Circuit which hosts the Singapore F1 Grand Prix. “Racing fans have found that Bugis has the perfect combination of proximity and affordable room rates. This has raised the overall awareness for hotels in the Bugis district, which eventually drives up the hotel bookings over time.”

Indeed, Bugis has a lot to offer. A downtown district served by Bugis MRT (EW12) train station, Bugis is on the direct train line from Changi Airport. Guests can arrive at Bugis in under 35-minute for just S$2 per ride. The district is also bordered by the other popular tourists’ hubs like Orchard Road, Little India, Chinatown and Marina Bay, meaning travelers have all the sights within easy reach.

According to BudgetHotels.sg, budget hotels in Bugis like
Ibis Hotel Bencoolen Singapore on Bencoolen  (in the
photo above) are the most popular accommodation
choices for cost-conscious travelers.
Last but not least, Lee thinks a big draw could be the shopping. While Orchard Road deserves its title as the most famous shopping boulevard in Singapore, Bugis actually offers better value and variety for the budget traveler. The cheapest accessories and souvenirs are found in the Bugis Street Market, the largest street bazaar in Singapore, while good hagglers can obtain unbeatable deals for electronics from Sim Lim Square IT Mall.

Whatever the reasons, one fact is clear: budget travelers have declared Bugis the most attractive district to stay in when visiting Singapore. And with so much going for the area, that is a trend unlikely to change anytime soon.

10 Singapore hotels win agoda 2012 Gold Circle Award

Agoda.com, Asia’s leading hotel booking site, has announced the 2012 recipients of its prestigious Gold Circle Awards, recognizing hotels that lead by example in the competitive hospitality industry.

Launched in 2009, the awards are given to Agoda.com partners who are committed to accommodating the unique needs of the online booking industry, which has seen significant and steady global growth as technology continues to make online booking faster, easier and more convenient.

Previous Gold Circle Award winners were chosen because of their outstanding performance on  Agoda.com, a high number of positive customer reviews, and their utilization of Agoda.com’s custom-built Yield Control System (YCS). This year, however, the bar has been raised a bit higher, and new judging criteria make the list even more exclusive.

Agoda.com now also takes into account a greater amount of data, including aggregate scores for customer reviews, top-performing properties, competitive pricing, and for showing an understanding of the complex business dynamics that define the industry.

Commenting on this year’s awards, Mr. Errol Cooke, Director of Hotels – Global at Agoda.com said, “We are delighted to recognize our hotel partners for the 2012 Agoda.com Gold Circle Awards. Now in their fifth year, the awards are recognized as a mark of excellence in online distribution. This year, we have awarded hotels across the globe for their commitment to online revenue management and consistently offering great value at a fair price to Agoda.com customers.”

Resorts World Sentosa - Hard Rock Hotel is one of the hotels awarded with agoda 2012 Gold Circle.
When guests of any of this year’s 494 winners see the Agoda.com Gold Circle Award upon arrival, they can be assured that their stay will be relaxing, comfortable, and up to the standards that Agoda.com customers have come to expect.

Among dozens of hotels, 10 of them are in Singapore. Following Singapore hotels are awarded with the Gold Circle by agoda.

Cheap Singapore Hotels - Value Hotel Balestier

208 room Value Hotel Balestier in Singapore is one of the cheap and decent hotels you can consider to stay if you are budget conscious or simply does not pay a fortune to an overpriced Singapore hotel. With standard rooms starting from 99 Singapore Dollars per night (US$ 85) and its relatively central location, the hotel offers excellent value-for-money.

Value Hotel Balestier is at the  intersection of Balestier Road and Thomson Road and is walking distance away from Novena MRT Station of North South MRT Line, which is only 2 stations away from Singapore's shopping street Orchard Road and 6 stations away the Raffles Place, Singapore's Central Business District. You can either take a bus to the MRT station from the bus stop is just in front of the hotel or walk 5 minutes down to the station. Balestier Road area is an attraction on its own; it is  known for its food such as bak kut teh, chicken rice and tau sar piah and is home to many budget hotels in Singapore.

The hotel is basic and the rooms are clean. Hotel provides free highspeed WIFI internet in the room if booked room online. If you cannot stay in a windowless room, insist on a room with a window since some rooms in this hotel comes without window. Value Hotel is a hotel chain and there are 3 Value Hotels on Balestier Road: Value Hotel Thomson (at 592 Balestier Road), Value Hotel Nice (302 Balestier Road) and Value Hotel Balestier (218 Balestier Road). So if you are taking cab to there do not forget to mention the address (218 Balestier Road) otherwise you may end up in the wrong one.

All of the 208 rooms are air conditioned and come with coffeemakers, cable TV, iron and ironing boards, phones, hairdryers, and bathrooms. The hotel offers on site parking available. Although the hotel does not have an onsite restaurant, in Balestier Road you really do not need a hotel restaurant.

As a person living in Singapore for a long time, a lot of people ask me for advise for a budget hotel to stay in Singapore. This hotel is one of the hotels in my recommendation list for both business and leisure travelers since for only a cheap 99 SGD per night, it is really difficult to find a central and clean hotel in Singapore.

It is 5 to 10 minutes walking distance from Bugis MRT Station and Little India MRT Station.  You can easily  take the MRT from  Singapore Changi Airport as the Bugis MRT Station is on the same line.
