ACRES files for possible animal cruelty by Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)

ACRES on February 8th filed an official request to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) to investigate possible animal cruelty by Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). ACRE said "according to scientific research, anthropogenic noise is a known stressor for cetaceans, which have very sensitive hearing. The firework displays may have compromised the dolphins’ welfare, as the close proximity and loud noises may have disorientated and distressed them."

Despite appeals from ACRES and members of the public not to, on 7th and 8th December 2012, RWS went ahead and held firework displays near the enclosures the wild-caught dolphins were confined in.

A statement issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India (a statutory advisory body on Animal Welfare laws) in January 2013 similarly stated that: “Exposure to loud sounds – airborne and underwater – can also stress cetaceans. The sensitive hearing of cetaceans is well-established and numerous studies, many on-going, are documenting the harmful effects that anthropogenic noise can have on them. Sound travels very well through water and even airborne (e.g., aircraft, music) sounds can penetrate the air-water interface and be heard by captive animals. When cetaceans cannot remove themselves from prolonged, loud sounds, physiological stress and damage can result.”

“ACRES is concerned that the dolphins may be terrified by or suffer as a result of firework displays. We once again appeal to RWS to cease any firework displays near the dolphin enclosures” said Mr. Louis Ng, Chief Executive of ACRES.

3 of 27 dolphins captured for Resort World Sentosa have already died. The last one died on its way to Singapore although RWS claimed that the dolphin was fit to travel.

ACRES and other animal activists around the region have been campaigning for the release of the remaining dolphins. ACRES runs a Facebook page named Save the World’s Saddest Dolphins

Not all attractions at the park will be opened on November 22.  The park is set to have its grand opening on Dec 7 2012. Until  then, for example, dolphins section will not be opened.

S.E.A Aquarium

S.E.A. Aquarium is the world’s largest aquarium  and will be home to 100,000 marine animals of over 800 species in 45 million litres of water. Comprising 10 different zones with 49 habitats, the aquarium takes guests on an underwater voyage beginning from Southeast Asia, and continues through the Arabian Gulf and the Open Ocean. Along the way, guests can expect to meet majestic manta rays, hammerhead sharks, bottlenose dolphins and other marine creatures.

S.E.A. Aquarium Senior Curator Grant Willis said: “S.E.A. Aquarium offers not only a stunning display
of habitats, but also education and conservation programmes in which families and guests can participate. Younger guests will be thrilled to know that we have specially-designed exhibits such as the Discovery Touch Pool, the Lens Aquarium and Floor Aquarium, to provide them up-close encounters with our marine residents.”

The centerpiece of the Aquarium is the  Open Ocean habitat, seen through the world’s largest viewing panel, at 36 metres wide by 8.3 metres tall; Guests viewing the habitat could experience the feeling of being on a cavernous ocean floor. The habitat is flanked by an Ocean Dome –an all-round viewing area and the  Ocean Restaurant, an outlet propagating sustainable seafood principles. Eleven  Ocean Suites  occupy the opposite site of the habitat, offering a twist to the proposition of sea-view by providing guests the experience of waking to an under-the-sea vista.

The Adventure Cove Waterpark is a splashing affair for thrill-seekers. Guests can choose to get their adrenaline pumping with six water slides, including the region’s first hydro-magnetic coaster  – Riptide Rocket; chill out at the Bluwater Bay wave pool; or relax while tubing along the Adventure River.  One of the world’s longest lazy-rivers, the 620-meter river meanders through 14 themed scenes of tropical jungles, grottos, a surround aquarium and more.

The waterpark is also the only of its kind in the region to have marine life. Guests will have the opportunity to snorkel among thousands of fish at the colourful Rainbow Reef, or to sign up for rayfeeding and interaction programmes with sharks and dolphins, which will be introduced next year.

Mr. Edmond Quah, Director of Park Operations at Adventure Cove Waterpark said: “Adventure Cove

We hope these experiences will move guests to take action to protect the oceans when they leave the park.”

Singapore’s Largest Luxury Spa Opens at Resorts World Sentosa

Resorts World Sentosa adds another world-class product to its offerings with the opening of ESPA, a 10,000 square meter luxury spa.  Set to open on 6 July 2012 at the tranquil western tip of the integrated resort, ESPA at Resorts World Sentosa (ESPA at RWS) will be the brand’s flagship spa in Asia and an
oasis for those wishing to escape from the city or taking time out from the resort’s attractions.

ESPA is the proud partner of luxury hotel groups such as Ritz-Carlton, Peninsula, One&Only and Leela Palaces, and owners and property companies within 55 countries to create some of the world’s finest spas. Founded in 1993 by renowned spa guru Susan Harmsworth MBE, ESPA’s holistic approach provides guests with a personalized spa journey using classic treatments that combine new and indigenous techniques with their signature natural products.

Susan Harmsworth MBE, CEO and Founder, ESPA said, “With ESPA at RWS, we are bringing 30 years of spa heritage and knowledge, spa operations and training expertise as well as award-winning products and
treatments to Singapore and Resorts World Sentosa.   It is ESPA’s largest spa in the region with 24 treatment rooms and a repertoire of treatments that pays homage to Singapore’s melting pot of cultures - all delivered with the best technology, treatments and therapists.”

“ESPA at RWS will offer a spa experience that is out of this world with Singapore’s first authentic Hammam,
onsen-style pools and other state-of the-art spa facilities. We are privileged to work with ESPA to create this exceptional spa, which together with ESPA’s spa expertise will help to elevate the spa scene in
Singapore,” said Ms Laura Vallati, General Manager, ESPA at RWS, Resorts World Sentosa.

“With ESPA at RWS, we created an oasis among a bustling and lively island environment. This gem of a spa is the perfect place to unwind, relax and forget time,” said Ms Vallati. “We carved out the spa journey for ESPA at RWS by focusing on ‘bringing the outdoors in’ through landscaped outdoor journeys and views of lush tropical forestry, combined with beautifully designed private and social spaces inside the spa, which will meet every guests’ expectation,” she added.

ESPA at RWS is spread across 10,000 square metres of manicured landscaped gardens, pools and ponds set against a backdrop of picturesque sea views and jungle covered hillsides – equivalent to one-third the size of the National Orchid Garden. Spa-goers can choose to have their treatments in 24 multi-functional treatment rooms with beautiful views, 2 Private Spa Suites overlooking the reflection pool and 2 Beach Villas with dramatic sea views.

Designed for total relaxation and rejuvenation, the spa grounds are dotted with spacious pre- and post treatment relaxation areas for guests to contemplate and meditate.  These include the sleep zone and social relaxation lounge with views of the reflection pool, vitality pools,  onsen-inspired pools and pavilions set in tropical gardens.  From their first step through the door, spa-goers will immerse in a tranquil environment that extends their spa experience beyond the treatments.

ESPA at Resorts World Sentosa

A key highlight guests can look forward to among its signature treatments is the first-in-Singapore authentic
Turkish Hammam.  Derived from the Arabic word meaning ‘heat’, hammam treatments are the age-old ritual of  cleansing and purification in traditional heated bathhouses of Morocco and Turkey that has gained popularity amongst spa enthusiasts. Using the traditional Kese mitt and black olive soap, a full-body foam massage and nourishing mud body mask, these treatments leave you energized and with silky smooth skin.

The spectacular spa environment also features various indoor and outdoor heat and water experiences with
separate areas for men and women.  Each section is equipped with its own vitality pool fitted with air and water massage jets, an icy plunge pool, a sauna with uninterrupted views over the pools and forest beyond, and walkways that converge at a Japanese onsen style pool offering views of the lush jungle-covered hillside.

In addition to a comprehensive menu of results-driven body treatments, facials and massages, ESPA at RWS provides a top-to-toe experience with a Nail Studio perfect for social gatherings; a fully-equipped gym; a studio for yoga, pilates and meditation; and The Tangerine Spa Café.
