Ebola risk in Singapore is low says MOH as the deadliest Ebola virus outbreak goes out of control

The largest Ebola virus disease outbreak to date, the ongoing 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak, which is affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia is out of control. Since March 2014, there have been 1,201 cases of Ebola and 672 died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. This makes the current kill rate of Ebola 60% and Ebola virus can kill up to 90% of the people it effects.

More worrying aspect of the current Ebola outbreak is its reach. Previous outbreaks were confined to small villages and did not travel long distances. But last week,  a 40-year-old American man of Liberian descent who worked for the West African nation's Finance Ministry died in Nigeria after taking several flights on Asky Airlines.

The idea of the Ebola virus travelling in commercial airliners is a horror scenario. There are 35 countries, including USA, France and Germany which are only one flight away from the epicenter of the outbreak. Although the virus is hard to transmit and makes people to sick to travel around, the average time between contracting the infection and the onset of symptoms is 13 days. Which means a person carrying the virus will not have any sign and symptoms for 2 weeks andcan easily pass through customs without detected.

Ebola can be transmitted from humans to humans but it requires direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. It is not transmitted through air. Since it makes its victims very sick and kills most of them, a large scale global epidemic is highly unlikely. In fact, simple diseases like diarrhea kills more people in a day than Ebola did since 1976 but its high death rate makes it very scary.

Ebola cases have been suspected in Britain and Hong Kong, but patients have so far tested negative.

2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak is the deadliest since the first outbreak in 1976.
According to Ministry of Health (MOH), Ebola virus disease advised not to be alarmed by reports of Ebola cases overseas:

"The Ministry of Health's (MOH) current assessment is that Ebola poses a low public health risk to Singapore since person-to-person transmission results from direct contact with bodily fluids of those infected, and there is low travel connectivity to West Africa where the current outbreak remains limited to.

MOH is in close contact with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and our counterparts internationally, and will continue to monitor the situation. Our hospitals will be vigilant in testing for Ebola where clinically indicated, such as in patients with the symptoms and a compatible travel history.  All suspected and confirmed cases will be isolated. In addition, the Ministry will conduct contact tracing and all close contacts will be quarantined, if a case is detected."

Singapore tourist scams

Scams in Singapore are negligible compared to its South East Asian neighbors but this does not mean that Singapore is a scam free destination for tourists. There are some scams to be aware of and better to avoid to not lose money in an already expensive place.

Singapore Electronics Shop scams in Sim Lim Square and Lucky Plaza
There are various scam tactics employed by shops in Singapore but Sim Lim Square and Lucky Plaza seem to be the place where most scams are executed against tourists. Since an average tourist assumes that Singapore must be scam free, many easily fall in these scams.

"Many shops, particularly those on lower levels selling games, cameras and mobiles, in Sim Lim Square resort to scam tactics to reap higher profits. Unwary shoppers might fall into the traps of unscrupulous sellers." Source : Sim Lim Square

There are many scams the shops in Sim Lim Square and Lucky Plaza employs. One very popular one is to sell an expensive smartphone with "too-good-to-be-true" price and after buyer pays and before he gets the product, he is forced to pay for extras which will make the total price ridiculously higher than the most expensive price of the electronics good you can find. See these articles for common types of scams :  Scams at Sim Lim Square: How to shop smart and Singapore Shop Scam Tactics at Sim Lim and Lucky Plaza.

My advise : Do only buy products from their authorized vendors. i.e. Apple Shops. I would not also buy electronics from Lucky Plaza or Sim Lim Square. Funan Digital Life Mall in City Hall is a better alternative. Or you try Changi Airport, Challenger outlets (there is a large  Challenger Superstore in Funan), Harvey Norman or Courts kind of chain stores. If you really want to shop in Sim Lim Square and Lucky Plaza, shop in the highest floors where more honest business are located.

Taxi Overcharges
Unsuspected tourist may be overcharged by taxi drivers by taking a very long route to their destination. It is wise to have a local smartphone card with 1 GB internet in Singapore Changi Airport and use Google maps and simply Google to locate the destination and a reasonable route.

If you are overcharged, write down the taxi licence plate and report it to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) at 1800-2255582.

Overcharging Restaurants / Hawker Centers
First, I should say that you may be overcharged not because the owner is a scam artist but because of a cultural misunderstanding. Some food like tiger prawns and crab are expensive. When you order one of these, no one will warn you about its price because doing so may be rude (the waiter may think that he/she may be implying that "you cannot afford it").

Airport Chrysler Taxi Cabs
I am not sure this also can be called scam but this is a definite trick in Changi Airport to part you with your money. In the arrival hall taxi stand, there are old men, called "uncle", who direct you to the waiting taxi. Since I am "Ang Mo" they almost always do this to me and probably doing it to almost every visitor : They direct locals to normal cabs and when a tourist comes next, they direct them to a Cryslar Taxi which is waiting there. These limousine taxis are expensive. They cost almost twice on the same route and if you are going to west end of Singapore, the difference really hurts (can be plus 40 SGD!).

If you are not intentionally looking for a limousine taxi, reject the old man's offer by saying "I do not want Cryslar" or "limo". He will immediately direct you to the normal taxi, which was probably the real "next" taxi for you.

I do not know these uncles are getting money from Chryslar taxis but whenever I fly into Singapore (and I travel quite a lot), I am almost always directed to a Cryslar waiting there.

 Stand-up fortune teller man a.k.a You are a very lucky man/woman sir/madam scam ...
I could not find a good name for this but this one must be finding a lot of victims because I see the same line and the same type of scam artists regularly since 2006. Indeed yesterday, when I was visiting a friend in Swissotel The Stamford, I have been targeted by two scam artists in the 20 meter radius of this central Singapore hotel.

An Indian or Sikh dude approaches you with almost always the same line : "You are a very lucky man / You are a very lucky woman ...". And without asking permission, he starts to "read you" with probably one of the few lines he picks based on your gender, age and looks. This "casual" fortune telling takes around 5 minutes and then it is followed by a persuading request to donate money to a charity in Nepal / India / somewhere ... He will have a photo book to show you and this donation will be anything above 20 SGD.

Simply avoid them. I believe there are dozens of these guys roaming Singapore for new victims every day.

Shop the Royal Boutique!

Princessa’s Royal Boutique

Shopping is one of the many joys in Singapore, but with the countless number of brands around, the local small players sometimes get overshadowed by the big boys.

Introducing to you a local-established up-and-coming fashion boutique, ♔ Princessa’s Royal Boutique ♔.

♔ Princessa’s Royal Boutique ♔ is an online boutique that potrays the fashion style and must-have closet essentisal of blogger-cum-entrepreneur, Sabrina Wang. Most of you may know her from her own blog at

This royal princess has gone all out to hand pick items around the world to bring you ♔ Princessa’s Royal Boutique ♔.

Sabrina Wang

The online fashion store emerged late last year, since, they’ve launched their very own mobile app on Android, followed by an IOS version months after.

Actively engaging on social media platforms, the brand constantly run social media activities on Facebook (with an eCommerce Facebook app) and Instagram. The fashion brand has also gotten itself involved in numerous events such as Valentine Vendetta, NUS Union Camp, etc; and more to come.

Online Fashion Store

Online, I’m better known as Princessa, an alter ego, online persona, pen name or however you want to call it, of the original version, which is myself, Sabrina. To be absolutely honest, the persona is pretty much a selective version of my actuality. The persona is position to be a little more “ditsy”, carefree, happy go lucky… and a little spoilt.
I started “blogging” over 16 years ago? It was a personal mix development website while exploring the beauty of the internet (as well as HTML) on a 56k modem. Then, the term blogging didn’t even exist. We were still using platforms like Angelfire, if you have even heard of it – Lycos.
One site after another, then suddenly “blogging” hit the world, and afterwards came Social Media – from Web 0 to Web 2.0 to… I somewhat lost track on the numeric.

A lot has changed, so did my supposed “branding”.
When “blogging” popularized, I started adopting “Princess Sabrina” (every girl wants to be a princessa). Eventually, there was a need to shorten the name… and poof, the birth of Princessa.

So from geeky gamer girl (I was an avid competitive PC gamer, no joke), I revamped into pink princess.
Why am I saying all this?
Princessa was/is somewhat the better version of who I am/was. As the Princessa name caught on, it went from an online/blogging persona to somewhat a brand – like Rachel Zoe, Marc Jacobs, etc.

Online Shopping

Now have you seen the online store yet?
