Hotels in Singapore Suffocates From Worsening Haze

Hotels in Singapore are gasping for reprieve from the haze that has descended over the island state since June 13. As the country is shrouded in a dense blanket of smoky fog, tourists started cancelling hotel room reservations, cutting short their holiday and diverting to haze-free destinations.

Singapore faces its worst haze situation since the 1997 Southeast Asian Haze; a large-scale air quality disaster affecting many countries in the region. According to statistics from the National Environment Agency of Singapore (http://www.nea.gov.sg), the Pollutants Standard Index (PSI), a measurement for air pollution has indicated Singapore’s air quality to be in the “very unhealthy” range since June 18. NEA has also issued health advisory for the public to stay indoors and should avoid all physical activity outdoor.

The haze also couldn’t have come at the right time as July to August period is the peak season for visitors from China and Indonesia. Hotels in Singapore are now anticipating a drop in visitors from these top two visitor markets. Other regional markets are also expected to make alternative plans as tourists are put off by the polluted air.

“We have noticed a 16% drop in hotel room bookings since June 17 when the haze starts to worsen. And on Thursday when the PSI hit 371 which is unprecedented and at a hazardous level, we started to see tourists cancelling their booked hotel rooms in Singapore,” says Danny Lee of BudgetHotels.sg.

Room bookings for Bugis have overtaken other districts according to Singapore budget hotel specialist BudgetHotels.sg.

When choosing a place to stay, tourists visiting Singapore have traditionally opted for historical favorites like Chinatown and Little India, but that preference is rapidly changing in favor of budget hotels in Bugis, especially those near Bugis MRT station, says Danny Lee, founder of BudgetHotels.sg.

The Singapore budget hotel specialist has observed a 38% spike in room bookings through its portal for hotels in the Bugis area in recent years, a trend that looks set to keep increasing. While there are many budget hotels in the Bugis area, prices are not necessarily cheaper than those of Little India and Chinatown, suggesting that other factors are creating the draw.

“There’s a buzz about Bugis,” notes Lee, “and it offers some of everything.” Indeed, Bugis has one of the most fascinating histories of the downtown districts, being once a settlement for immigrants, then an infamous red-light rendezvous point for transvestites, before transforming into the modern and urban playground of the young and trendy that it is today. Yet it retains its personality in its eclectic mix of old churches, crowded street-bazaars and high rise mall complexes.

Another factor, Lee suggests, could be the proximity to the Formula One racing track. Bugis is geographically situated just outside the Marina Bay Street Circuit which hosts the Singapore F1 Grand Prix. “Racing fans have found that Bugis has the perfect combination of proximity and affordable room rates. This has raised the overall awareness for hotels in the Bugis district, which eventually drives up the hotel bookings over time.”

Indeed, Bugis has a lot to offer. A downtown district served by Bugis MRT (EW12) train station, Bugis is on the direct train line from Changi Airport. Guests can arrive at Bugis in under 35-minute for just S$2 per ride. The district is also bordered by the other popular tourists’ hubs like Orchard Road, Little India, Chinatown and Marina Bay, meaning travelers have all the sights within easy reach.

In Singapore's expensive hotel market, it may look like you need to choose among two options: Either pay expensive prices to stay in a Singapore hotel or pay less but stay in a typical army-style bunk bed type dorm of a hostel. But if you want something between what would you do? Enter Singapore's recent phenomenon to address this issue: Capsule hotel inspired boutique hostels. These new breed of hostels can feel the gap between hostel and boutique hotel. This type of hostel is first introduced by Match Box Concept Hostel at Ann Siang Road of Chinatown and there are now several hostels in this class like Bunc Hostel in Little India, Adler Hostel and Wink Hostel.

The cost of one night stay in a capsule or pod style bed starts from $40 at Bunc Hostel and $45 at Match Box Concept Hostel. This is significantly lower than the nearest best class of accommodation  a budget hotel with a box style room. And do not think these hostels are only for backpackers who do not mind to pay $20-30 more to stay in a nicer hostel. Hostels like Wink Hostels get great reviews in online hotel booking sites such as agoda.com. For example, Wink Hostel has 251 reviews in agoda from business to solo travellers which sum up to an 8.8 (fantastic) review point. For example in a review "if they could have the actual capsules from Japan, this place will rock" says a solo traveler. "But it is as good as it gets in Singapore. Strangely enough I wasn't the only business traveller in this place."

As far as I know there is no capsule hotel in Singapore but some of the hostels in Singapore offer capsule styled beds which provides more privacy compared to the standard dorm beds of a typical hostel. These capsule (or pod) styled hostels are also tend to be relatively luxurious in the dorms and common areas which caters to budget travellers who looks for something between a hostel and hotel.

Porcelain Hotel
Mosque Street on Chinatown offers several very nice boutique hotels and hostels and one of them is Porcelain Hotel. If you go to Porcelain Hotel's web site you may not recognize that this is a budget hotel. Rack rates advertised there start from 200++ SGD and goes to levels of 5-star hotels but if you, like everyone else, book online, the hotels room rates start from 85 USD.

The rooms offered at Porcelain Hotel are very very small so if you need some space you need to book a bigger one (not a 6-8 sqm but a 16 sqm) one. Other than that the location is just great and convenient and the hotel and its rooms are very comfortable and clean.

With room prices starting from SGD 104 per night and a brilliantly located property on one of Chinatown’s best known historical lanes, Porcelain Hotel brings low hotel room prices and a central location together.

In Singapore, if a hotel has a good location and good price, the compromise is usually in the room size: the rooms tend to be very small. So well located cheap hotels in Singapore offers very small rooms. In the Porcelain Hotel case, rooms are very very small. We are talking about just 6-8 square meter boxes with no space to walk around. Although rooms are small, they are very clean and equipped with comfortable beds, Flat-screen TV, air-con and coffee makers. So if you are someone who spends time in the room or need some space in the room, either go for larger rooms in the hotel or the hotel is not for you. But if you only need a comfortable bed to sleep and rest, a shower and a clean space, Porcelain Hotel offers one of the best value for money stay option in Singapore.

If you check the rack rates on hotels own web site, the room rates start from 200 SGD and goes to levels which can put you in a luxury 5-Star hotel. I am not sure why they advertise rates like that but forget about them. If you, like many others, go to online hotel booking sites like Agoda, you will see rates starting from 104 Singapore Dollars per night. When I have last checked a 8 sq.m. standard single room with a single size bed was going for 104 SGD (rack rate on hotel's own web site for 200 SGD) and a 16 sq.m. Executive room equipped with a queen bed was going for 150 SGD (rack rate on hotel's web site is 350 SGD).

Location is the best part of the Porcelain Hotel. It is located right next to Chinatown MRT Station on Singapore's North East Line and you can go everywhere easily. Chinatown itself is the best area to stay in Singapore for many travellers. There are a lot of things to do, eat and try.  There are many restaurants in the streets around the hotel and there is a big food center just opposite, in People's Park. It is so near to Singapore's Central Business District (CDB) that you can even walk from the hotel to the CDB.

Are you looking for a hotel in Singapore which is below $100 per night? Then Value Hotel Thomson is a very good alternative with you. Third although the rooms the hotel offers are small as all other budget hotels in Singapore, they come with all basic amenities like a comfortable and clean bed, an LCD TV with a few cable channels, air con, free WiFi, en-suite shower, safe deposit box and complimentary beverages.

Hotels in this price range and with this quality are usually not in a central location like this so for location, good value for money and several other factors, this small budget hotel shines in cheap alternatives in Singapore.

As with most budget hotels in Singapore, I would suggest to check several things before booking a room in Value Hotel Thomson. Some rooms are inner rooms with no windows and if this will be a problem with you check it before booking a room.

In-room internet is free which is also a bonus for a budget hotel.  

Singapore hotel room rates may be very expensive but still there are relatively cheap hotels in Singapore for cost-conscious travelers. The rooms in these hotels are very small and some are far outside the city. But there are still some cheap hotels in or around city center. 3 hotels of budget hotel chain of Value Hotel Singapore are good alternatives for budget travelers or for those who would like to enjoy their money outside instead of burying it to an expensive hotel room.

208 room Value Hotel Balestier in Singapore is one of the cheap and decent hotels you can consider to stay if you are budget conscious or simply does not pay a fortune to an overpriced Singapore hotel. With standard rooms starting from 99 Singapore Dollars per night (US$ 85) and its relatively central location, the hotel offers excellent value-for-money.

Value Hotel Balestier is at the  intersection of Balestier Road and Thomson Road and is walking distance away from Novena MRT Station of North South MRT Line, which is only 2 stations away from Singapore's shopping street Orchard Road and 6 stations away the Raffles Place, Singapore's Central Business District. You can either take a bus to the MRT station from the bus stop is just in front of the hotel or walk 5 minutes down to the station. Balestier Road area is an attraction on its own; it is  known for its food such as bak kut teh, chicken rice and tau sar piah and is home to many budget hotels in Singapore.

The hotel is basic and the rooms are clean. Hotel provides free highspeed WIFI internet in the room if booked room online. If you cannot stay in a windowless room, insist on a room with a window since some rooms in this hotel comes without window. Value Hotel is a hotel chain and there are 3 Value Hotels on Balestier Road: Value Hotel Thomson (at 592 Balestier Road), Value Hotel Nice (302 Balestier Road) and Value Hotel Balestier (218 Balestier Road). So if you are taking cab to there do not forget to mention the address (218 Balestier Road) otherwise you may end up in the wrong one.

All of the 208 rooms are air conditioned and come with coffeemakers, cable TV, iron and ironing boards, phones, hairdryers, and bathrooms. The hotel offers on site parking available. Although the hotel does not have an onsite restaurant, in Balestier Road you really do not need a hotel restaurant.

As a person living in Singapore for a long time, a lot of people ask me for advise for a budget hotel to stay in Singapore. This hotel is one of the hotels in my recommendation list for both business and leisure travelers since for only a cheap 99 SGD per night, it is really difficult to find a central and clean hotel in Singapore.

The 3 star hotel is located within walking distance to Novena MRT Station and the Orchard shopping belt is two train stops away. It is also located near medical facilities (Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Medical Centers) and shopping malls such as United Square, Velocity and Square2 Malls. Travelling by car, it takes about 20 minutes to Singapore Changi Airport and Singapore Cruise Centre. Within a 10-15 minute drive from the hotel are Little India, Arab Street, Fort Canning Park and the National Museum of Singapore.

The rooms are stylish designed with timber floors, large bay windows and high ceiling. Each room includes complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access and amenities such as a 32-inch LCD TV, an in-room electronic safe, tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer and a direct dial telephone. Each room comes with either a queen-size bed or twin beds, as well as an attached bathroom with a standing shower.

The hotel provides complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access at hotel lobby area and guest rooms. The hotel has gym facilities as well.

The hotels appeal is its relatively budget room prices. Room prices in Ibis Singapore Novena starts from 168 SGD per night which is quite budget in Singapore standard.

Located on the ground floor as well, the hip, modern and funky In-House Bar is a relaxing place for guests to relax and enjoy a pre-dinner drink or simply enjoy the ambience.

According to hotels combined, Ibis Singapore Novena has a good, 7.6, review rate. Of the 413 reviews, guest give thumb up to all major aspects of the hotel: free internet, clean rooms, comfortable beds, helpful and polite staff, convenient location and economic price.

Although there is nothing like cheap accommodation in Singapore and especially hotels at Singapore are very expensive, there are some relatively budget hotels in Singapore. And no, if you are looking for a cheap singapore hotel in Singapore, Hotel 81s or hotels far away from city center are not your only option. There are plenty of budget hotels in Singapore located centrally. One of them is Perak Hotel, located centrally in Little India.

Perak Hotel was formerly known as Perak Lodge. The hotel was voted amongst the top 50 Best Budget Hotels in the world conducted by The Independent, a UK-based newspaper in May 2001. This budget hotel occupies a beautifully restored building, 5-10 minutes walk away from Bugis MRT Station and Little India MRT Station.
