According to a survey conducted among Singapore residents (Singaporeans ans Singapore PRs), the society in Singapore is kiasu, competitive, self-centered and elitist. They have chosen top 10 values and behaviors defining the society here today as:
Being a very limiting and potentially full happiness draining value, kiasu, top value; 8 of these 10 words are limiting to societies well being says Chief Executive of the Barrett Values Center, one of the firms behind the survey. Singapore residents want to see the following in the society:
- Kiasu (scared to lose to others)
- Competitive
- Self-centered
- Material needs
- Kiasi (scared to die)
- Deteriorating values
- Elitism
- Blame
- Uncertainty about the future
- Security

MP for Tampines GRC Baey Yam Keng, who was at the briefing, said:
“The top few behaviours and values reflects the state of society today. The potentially limiting values like kiasu-ism and self-centredness show that people are being self-critical that we acknowledge our shortcomings. At least we are open about that.”
