Wireless speakers in Singapore

Wireless speakers entered the market just a few years ago but their popularity is in exponential growth. As the number of players in wireless speakers market is growing as well as the prices are falling, consumers are opting more for this convenient option.

Wireless speakers allow people to play music from their smart phones remotely and since the number of smart phone users increased dramatically, market is wide open for these type of wireless devices. You can now find wireless speakers in every major electronics retailer here. And since Amazon is shipping free to Singapore, you can also buy many models online if you cannot find them in physical stores.

Wireless Speakers are also becoming cheaper. When wireless speakers first entered the market, yhey were expensive and sold for around 500 - 600 SGD. This was more than a year ago. A wireless speaker cost was about 189 SGD last year and now you can buy a wireless speaker for about 145 SGD.

One of the most popular application of wireless speakers is the commercial usage. For example if a cafe owner chooses wireless speakers for his business, he does not need to hire someone for wiring and often drilling holes on the walls for the wires.

There are many wireless speakers in the market now for all types of tastes and budgets. Speakers vary greatly in size, shape, and even the type of wireless system. Some wireless speakers include wireless transmitters built in and some do not come with the transmitters.

You also need to decide do you need a Bluetooth wireless speaker or AirPlay wireless speaker. Some wireless speakers support Apple AirPlay,  Apple's wireless audio feature that lets iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Mac users stream their iTunes libraries, and allow users to stream music to multiple speakers simultaneously. But you cannot stream music to these speakers from Android devices such as Samsung Galaxy phones. And AirPlay wireless speakers tend to be more expensive than the Bluetooth ones. They are also larger and consumes more power. If you need a battery powered wireless speaker so you can carry your speaker around, you will have hard time to find one.

Here are some of the best Wireless speakers according to PC Mag:

Buying natural manuka honey in Singapore made easy - HoneySpree

Benefits of honey are many : honey is an anti-bacterial, an anti-fungal, an anti-fungal while it is also full of antioxidants. Eating well and choosing the right food from the right retailer is important for me (especially for my family) and having a healthy honey in the breakfast table (I am Mediterranean and always had honey on the table since childhood) is a must. I do not know you but eating honey in the breakfast also energizes me a lot.

But not all honey are made equal. You won't get the most health benefits of honey by simply choosing a random honey container from a supermarket. You should choose a quality one like manuka honey. Produced in New Zealand and Australia from the nectar of the mānuka tree, monuka honey is known for its antibacterial and health-enhancing properties. This type of honey has an antibacterial property named UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) which is not found in all types of Manuka honey. The UMF Unique Manuka Factor is important because it is a measure that ascertains the level of potency of anti-bacterial properties in the particular supply of Manuka Honey.

I was looking for a way to buy manuka honey online and came across HoneySpree. Looking for Honey Singapore took me to this nice online retailer of natural honey and health foods. The company has a flagship product named Pure New Zealand Manuka Honey. And the UMF factor? UMF 15+. So higher anti-bacterial property.

Buy Manuka Honey Online - Honey Singapore
HoneySpree is a pro-family retailer of honey in Singapore and also sells gourmet tea, health food and super foods. Their flagship Pure New Zealand Manuka Honey is UMF 15+ with highest antibacterial benefits of honey.
The brand has a very interesting story. The owner, Beth Candice Wu, has discovered the benefits of manuka honey when her mother saw some improvement in her low immunity issues. But looking for a more effective product, she has done some footwork in New Zealand and discovered that only Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) honey would have the anti-bacterial, healing and health-enhancing properties. When her mother tried New Zealend UMF® honey and saw significant improvements in her health. This led to an online Singapore honey shop which also offers other healthy products. Today Honey Spree is one of the few places to buy manuka honey online and probably the only local one.

HoneySpree offers door-to-door delivery via courier service and if you are ordering from overseas (outside Singapore) they can also deliver through FedEx.

You can access the online shop here at honeyspree.com.

Shop the Royal Boutique!

Princessa’s Royal Boutique

Shopping is one of the many joys in Singapore, but with the countless number of brands around, the local small players sometimes get overshadowed by the big boys.

Introducing to you a local-established up-and-coming fashion boutique, ♔ Princessa’s Royal Boutique ♔.

♔ Princessa’s Royal Boutique ♔ is an online boutique that potrays the fashion style and must-have closet essentisal of blogger-cum-entrepreneur, Sabrina Wang. Most of you may know her from her own blog at http://www.sabrina.sg/diary.

This royal princess has gone all out to hand pick items around the world to bring you ♔ Princessa’s Royal Boutique ♔.

Sabrina Wang

The online fashion store emerged late last year, since, they’ve launched their very own mobile app on Android, followed by an IOS version months after.

Actively engaging on social media platforms, the brand constantly run social media activities on Facebook (with an eCommerce Facebook app) and Instagram. The fashion brand has also gotten itself involved in numerous events such as Valentine Vendetta, NUS Union Camp, etc; and more to come.

Online Fashion Store

Online, I’m better known as Princessa, an alter ego, online persona, pen name or however you want to call it, of the original version, which is myself, Sabrina. To be absolutely honest, the persona is pretty much a selective version of my actuality. The persona is position to be a little more “ditsy”, carefree, happy go lucky… and a little spoilt.
I started “blogging” over 16 years ago? It was a personal mix development website while exploring the beauty of the internet (as well as HTML) on a 56k modem. Then, the term blogging didn’t even exist. We were still using platforms like Angelfire, if you have even heard of it – Lycos.
One site after another, then suddenly “blogging” hit the world, and afterwards came Social Media – from Web 0 to Web 2.0 to… I somewhat lost track on the numeric.

A lot has changed, so did my supposed “branding”.
When “blogging” popularized, I started adopting “Princess Sabrina” (every girl wants to be a princessa). Eventually, there was a need to shorten the name… and poof, the birth of Princessa.

So from geeky gamer girl (I was an avid competitive PC gamer, no joke), I revamped into pink princess.
Why am I saying all this?
Princessa was/is somewhat the better version of who I am/was. As the Princessa name caught on, it went from an online/blogging persona to somewhat a brand – like Rachel Zoe, Marc Jacobs, etc.

Online Shopping

Now have you seen the online store yet?

Best Places to Buy Electronics in Singapore

BudgetHotels.sg has published a short "Best Places to Buy Electronics in Singapore" guide which is, according to Singapore budget hotel site's press release, voted for by a panel of Singaporeans. The nine stores who made it into the guide have each been designated as the best places in the country to buy electrical appliances including video cameras and televisions and gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. Each outlet on the list is a local favorite for everything from PC spare parts to Play Stations, Xboxes to Canon cameras.

Danny Lee, founder of BudgetHotels.sg said, “Singapore is well known for its abundance of electronics stores and discounts and deals on appliances and gadgets is almost a national store. Everywhere you turn there are special offers just waiting to be snapped up so navigating the maze and avoiding the tourist traps is key. Our Best Places to Buy Electronics in Singapore guide was created with local help – each outlet is tried and tested by Singaporeans and designated as one of their own top places to shop. With this in mind, we reckon it’s just as essential as sun cream for any visitor planning to splash out on a few new toys while in town!”
For each of the nine recommended ports of call, the guide features tips and insider knowledge so even newcomers to the city island will be shopping like a local within minutes.

The nine recommended places to buy electronics and IT gadgets are Sim Lim Square, Funan DigitaLife IT Mall, Mustafa Center, Harvey Norman, Courts, Parisilk, Challenger, Cathay Photo and Computer Fairs and Expo.

Each listing includes a helpful hint – shoppers checking out the retail chain Harvey Norman for example are advised to keep their eyes peeled for older flat-screen TV models which are often seriously discounted and offer great value for money. Shoppers heading for Sim Lim Square are advised to bypass the first floors and any so called ‘freebies’ which are often included in the price of the package anyway.

Best Places to Buy Electronics in Singapore

In addition to the insider tips and list of hot spots, this electronics buying guide from BudgetHotels.sg also includes addresses, websites, opening hours and nearest transport links.

VivoCity - The largest shopping mall in Singapore

Singapore is a country of shopping malls. Every corner of the city-state is occupied by a large shopping mall and in a country which is a shopping addicted Asian tourist magnet and where shopping is almost a national sport, more and more shopping malls are opened. I must admit, in my six years in Singapore, I have also became a shopping mall dweller. Especially after my daughter is born. It is hot and humid outside and not very baby-friendly so you are pushed into these malls anyway.

The largest shopping mall in Singapore is VivoCity and surprisingly this beautiful mall is not in Orchard Road area. It is a waterfront facility in Harbour Front right next to Harbour Front Center. It is also the best shopping mall in Singapore not only for its facilities but also for its surrounding. VivoCity is my favorite among all especially after the opening of Sentosa Boar Walk which allows a nice and sweet walk to Sentosa Island from VivoCity right into Resort Worlds Sentosa.

And of course there are many stores in VivoCity.

For bags and shoes you have ALDO, Bata, Camomilla Milano, Charles & Keith, ck Calvin Klein Accessories, Coach, Crocs, Crumples, DC Shoes, ECCO, Feb 29, Footin, Galleria Italiana, Geox, Gripz, Guess Accessories and Shoes, In:Famous, J West, Kipling, Mitju, Mondo, Pedro, Skechers and STACCATO;

For fashion and fashion accessories Aimer,  A|X Armani Exchange, bebe, Ben Sherman, Benjamin Barker, Bershka, Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein Underwear (opening soon), Cotton On, Crocodile, DC Comics Super Heroes, dENiZEN™, Desigual, Domanchi, ESPRIT, Forever 21, Forever New, G2000, GAP, Giordano, H&M, Hang Ten, Hush Puppies, iROO, Joop, Kiss Jane, kitschen, Lacoste, La Senza, Lee Cooper, Levi's, Levi's Lady's, Lowrys Farm, m)phosis, Mango, Man Studio, Mark & Spencer, MDS, Michael Kors (Opening Soon), Miss Selfridge, Morgan de Toi, Mugigae, Natural Project, nichii, Onitsuka Tiger, Pull & Bear, Rare Attitude, Red2, Springfield, Spring Maternity, Tally Weijl, TANGS, Ted Baker, Timberland, T.M.Lewin, Tommy Hilfiger, Topshop/Topman, UNIQLO, Warehouse and Zara;

Jewellery and watches:  C Square of City Chain, Casio G-Factory, CITIGEMS, City Chain, Dejewel Galleria, Emporio Armani Watches & Jewelry, Goldheart, Invicta, Love & Co., SEIKO, Sincere Fine Watches, SK Jewellery, Solvil et Titus, Soo Kee Jewel Pavilion, The Diamond Atelier, Watches of Switzerland and ZAPWatches.

There are many food outlets, restaurants and fast food chain stores as well as food courts in VivoCity. Some restaurants I like here are Brotzeit® German Bier Bar & Restaurant (German and European food and superb imported German beer), La Viva Spanish Tapas & Bar (have a lovely view of Sentosa Bay), PUTIEN (winner of the Best Chinese Restaurant and listed in Singapore's best 50 restaurants) and Poulet (French cuisine).

Other restaurants in VivoCity includes Akashi Japanese Restaurant (popular Reserve California Roll (vinegared rice envelopes the seaweed skin) and the King Prawn Grilled with Miso are must try), BeiShanChuan Spicy Steamboat Restaurant, Korea's leading chain of authentic BBQ restaurants BORNGA, Bosses, Central, Crystal Jade Dining IN, Crystal Jade Jiang Nan, Dian Xiao Er, etc.

Entertainment in VivoCity
Golden Village VivoCity (GV Vivocity) is has 15 screens under one roof and 4 cinema types across 2 floors. GV VivoCity sets a new benchmark for multiplexes in Singapore by introducing a sophisticated club ambience, with a 5-star food and beverage menu available (including a top wine list) and a private dining room. VivoCity also has a karaoke club Party World KTV and for gaming Timezone.

How to get to VivoCity?
VivoCity has direct underground connection to Purple Line's (NorthEast Line's) HarbourFront Station. If you are coming from Green Line you need to transfer at Outram Park. Do not take Harbour Front direction on Circle Line if you are in the city center. That is a big loop around the central and western Singapore to Harbour Front. Take Purple Line.

There are also many bus services going to VivoCity:  10, 30, 30e, 57, 61, 65, 80, 97, 97e, 100, 131, 143, 145, 166 and 855.

Hotels Near VivoCity
There are several hotels near VivoCity. Bay Hotel Singapore is the nearest hotel to VivoCity and is also a very good alternative for those who want to stay near Sentosa Island but do not want to pay for the expensive hotels on the island. Hotels of Resort World Sentosa such as Hard Rock Hotel, Hotel Michael and Festive Hotel are also quite near with a monorail ride away. If you are staying on Sentosa Island, VivoCity is the best shopping mall for you.

H&M is expanding in Singapore and Asia

It has been almost 2 years since Swedish high street fashion label Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) opened its first flagship store in Singapore. Since than the company has already opened five stores in Singapore. The newest three H&M stores have opened their doors in JEM, VivoCity and Suntec City last month. The flagship F&M store is in Orchard Building and the second shop was opened in November 2011 in Ion Orchard.

H&M sales increased in Singapore in the second half of 2012 for 38% compared to the second half of 2011 mostly thanks to the opening of their second store in Ion Orchard.

Other than opening new shops H&M has also decided to add a 4th level to its Orchard Building store which will be dedicated to kid's department. The kid's department, currently sharing a floor with Manswear department, saw a very strong sale which brings 20% of Singapore's total sales for H&M. The kidswear prices in H&M in Singapore range from $7.9 for a jersey top to $49.9 for a jacket. H&M Kid's concept store will sell merchandise ranging from new born to pre-teens aged 8 years to 14 years. The 2,800-square-meter store currently spans three levels with a complete range of fashion and accessories for women, men, teenagers and kids.

By the end of 2013, H&M is planning to add 60 stores to its existing 148 stores across China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. H&M offers a reputation as an international brand as well as a value-for-money proposition. Since shopping for fashion is a very populat activity for many Singaporeans the international brands like H&M finds it quite easy to sell in Singapore. When the first shop was opened in Singapore in September 2011, there were long queues in front of the Orchard Building shop where many has waited for long hours to be the first few to enter the flagship store.

Bigger Better Sales will be an online alternative and challange to Great Singapore Sales (GSS) and recently slammed by organizers of GSS by the way it takes away shoppers from GSS on the eve of GSS. Competing for the same shopper pool at almost at the same time with GSS, Bigger Better Sales (BBS) will feature up to 80 percent and 50 percent at Zalora and at Reebonz respectively, to travel deals such as one-way ticket at S$34 (US$27) to Kuala Lumpur on Jetstar. Popular brands like Golden Village Cinemas, Adidas, Eu Yan Sang and Courts are some of 50+ merchants participating the event.

"The idea is to be the online platform for the GSS. Singapore does not have a one-day sale culture yet" says Australian Dorjee Sun, the entrepreneur behind BBS. According to Mr Sun, the merchants will not be charged a fee in this first sale.

"We think that with around 50 merchants and several hundred products listed, we could be helping boost e-commerce in Singapore by an excess of several million in sales during our 24-hour sale and the subsequent 10-day period.

However our goal for the first year is about helping increase online wallet share online in Singapore while providing merchants with a great return on investments on this campaign, as we are offering them this first campaign for free."[1]

Agoda Great Singapore Sale Hotel Deals

What is the best time to visit Singapore if shopping is top in your travel agenda? Great Singapore Sales time is the best of course. Great Singapore Sales will be held between 31 May and 28 July 2013. Often abbreviated simply as GSS, Great Singapore Sales, is an annual event centered around the national sport of Singapore - shopping. During this time, participating outlets offer some of the best sales deals, specials and super saver deals in Singapore. The event is in its 20th year in 2013 and as before some of Singapore's best-known retail names will offer shoppers a great way to stock up on their favorite brands while seeing some of the city’s most dynamic neighborhoods.

Main focus of GSS will of course be on Singapore's central shopping district, Orchard Road, which is also one of the most famous shopping destination in Asia. With huge shopping malls such as the massive ION Orchard mall and the Mandarin Gallery, countless stores below and above the ground (and often interconnected by underground air-conditioned tunnels) biggest shopper crowd will be in Orchard Road.

But shopping in Singapore is not restricted to Orchard Road. Relatively new shopping enclaves like The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and Vivo City offers modern, branded and posh products while historical shopping streets like Chinatown, Kampong Glam, Holland Village and Little India offers unique objects, novelties and handcrafted items that reflect the unique personality of the neighborhood they’re sold in. Many of these neighborhoods also offer eclectic restaurants, live music and funky coffee shops to help shoppers recharge during their long day.

Shoppers can also check out the inaugural Singapore International Jewelry Expo 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Center from 4 to 7 July, which will showcase displays from leading designers, brands and gemstone suppliers from around the world across 8,000 square meters of floor space.

Qoo10 New Gmarket Singapore

Gmarket Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia, popular online marketplaces to buy and sell a wide range of products has been rebranded to Qoo10 in May 2012. This means Gmarket Singapore, one of the most visited and popular e-commerce sites in Singapore will soon operate from another domain named http://www.qoo10.com. This new domain is currently active but Gmarket.com.sg is also still be accessible as the activities moves to qoo10.com.

The usage and popularity of the shop has exploded fast according to the Giosis Gmarket International; (runs the site with a joint venture with eBay); daily transaction of gmarket Singapore was reported to be over 10,000 in the Singapore site for March 2011, and doubled to over 20,000 per day in December 2011 and monthly business amount of  6 Million Singapore Dollars.

The site operates like ebay, a platform to meet sellers and buyers. As a buyer you can register free and start buying items immediately from the sellers operating on the site. The site offers a wide range of products from fashion & clothing, beauty products, sport products to electronic gadgets and accessories, books and music.

Registering as a seller requires more work like getting seller authorization by submitting a copy of NRIC and  a copy of Bank statement (foreigners who hold valid work visas for Singapore (Employment Pass, Work Permit ; not a tourist visa) can also register as sellers by submitting the required documents). There is no listing fee in gmarket but you need to pay up to 12% from the sales proceedings to Qoo10. But the charge rate depends on sellers grade (normal, good and power) and the size of the sales and can be as low as 5% for power sellers and sales costing 500 SGD+. As far as I know, they also keep the money 15 days to get a received signal from the buyer and then release to your bank account.

Why did their change their name from gmarket to a hard to pronounce Qoo10? According to the official statement from the company, they would like to expand to global market from Asia and the branding is the step towards this goal. Gmarket Singapore is a quite well known name and leaving it behind for a new brand name is a bold move and we will see how their traffic will be effected. But although the brand name changes, there seems to be no plan to change the structure of the established online shopping and selling experience.

Buying electronics from Hong Kong is cheaper compared to Singapore

For many in Singapore, Hong Kong is the place to buy branded and luxury clothes, bags and shoes since they are cheaper to buy from Hong Kong instead of Singapore. So when someone heads to Hong Kong for anything, he/she usually carries a shopping list from friends and family to buy these items. But this shopping list should also include electronic gadgets since they are also much cheaper in Hong Kong compared to Singapore says Tan Chong Yaw in Digitial Life (The Straits Times). Savings can be as much as 35 per cent and for some expensive items like Canon EOS 1D Mark III, it can be 4,000 SGD+.

This is actually a known fact for many Singaporeans visiting Hong Kong regularly. They buy main stream consumer electronics, camera lenses, smart phones, and tablets from Hong Kong. You can check the prices in Hong Kong from a web site named price.com.hk before heading there so you can decide to buy something from Singapore or Hong Kong. Since not all items are cheaper or even available in Hong Kong, it is wise to do some online check before heading there.

Singapore Dollar has appreciated in recent years against other currencies as a MAS policy to keep inflation tamed. Since 2009, Singapore Dollar appreciated to a level where it is 20 per cent stronger than 2009 levels. And although this has made Singaporean products more expensive for outside world, outside world became cheaper for Singaporeans.

Hong Kong is relatively near to Singapore and a flight from here to Hong Kong would take less than 3 hours. The destination is popular in Singapore, one in every seven Singaporeans visited Hong Kong last year!

Below is a sample price comparison taken from DL The Straits Times, March 21st 2012 edition:

Mustafa Center in Singapore

If you cannot find it in Mustafa Center in Singapore, it does not exist. Mustafa in Singapore sells everything - from clothes to electronics, jeweleries to groceries (at one point they were even selling cars). Actually when you are in this 70,000 sq.ft, six story shopping center, you will think that it is easier to list what is not sold here than listing what is sold. It is a supply chain manager's hell but a budget shopper's heaven. When you need something and you are not sure where you can find it in Singapore, head to Mustafa, you will probably find it there. Do not worry about the time, it is open 24 hours.

Mustafa Center, 6 story shopping center which spans two complexes in the middle of Little India, is one of the oldest department stores in Singapore. It is within walking distance from Farrer Park MRT Station (MRT = subway) on the North East line (purple line). It is so popular that in 2010, Singapore Civil Defence Force applied for a court order to stop business temporarily for 40 hours on its first floor due to concerned about overcrowding in the 24-hour shop![1] In fact, there is an Electronic People Counting System installed in the center since September 2008 for crowd control.

Current Mustafa Center complex is what Mustaq Ahmad, transformed from a 900 sq foot shop in 4 decades ago. When you enter the complex, you will feel like you are in a huge department store which is mall sized! You can find good deals for accessories, cosmetics, electronics, home appliances, mobile phones, pharmacy, groceries, textiles, foreign currency exchange, hotel bookings, travel packages, budget airline tickets, and many more. The presentation of the goods sold is not impressive but this is a place to buy bargain (well, actually there is no consensus on that: some say it is cheaper to shop in Mustafa and some say it is more expensive here to buy). Although very crowded, if you are in Singapore and did not pay a visit to there, spend an evening (preferable weekday since it is very crowded in weekends). But be careful if you have kids, this shopping center consist of six interconnected stores and it would be very difficult to find your kid if you lose him/her.

Mustafa Center
Mustafa is also a cheap place to buy electronics and computer appliances like Sim Lim Square and is a lot cheaper compared to shops in central Singapore. If you are planning to visit Singapore and buying an electronic appliance (i.e. iPad), you will find the same product much cheaper in Mustafa or Sim Lim Square compared to Orchard Road shopping centers i.e. Lucky Plaza. If something you are looking for is sold out in Sim Lim Square or Funan, you can head to Mustafa to look for it.

Many new comers to Singapore overlook this place as a tourist attraction but Mustafa Center is a very good place to shop items for your house.

If you are heading to Singapore from India, it is probably cheaper to convert Rupees in Singapore rather than buying Singapore dollars in India and Mustafa Center is a good option to buy Singapore Dollars with Rupee.
