Weekend getaways from Singapore

Singapore may be a tropical island but it is very developed and its beaches have been completely consumed by land reclamation. Although well known paradise holiday islands like Phuket, Koh Samui and Bali are quite near by plane, there are also several nice weekend getaways from Singapore within a ferry or bus (or a combination of both) ride away from Singapore.

In this post we have listed some places for short getaway from Singapore. All of these can be accessed with a relatively short bus + ferry rise and requires no flight. A good way to find a good weekend getaway deal from Singapore would be checking group buying sites where there are tonnes of heavily discounted travel deals from Singapore to the destinations below.

Batam

Until recently Batam Island was a sex tourism and casino destination for Singapore residents (at least this was the first thing coming to mind). In the past few years, Batam has started to establish itself a short getaway destination from Singapore’s busy life. It offers cheap shopping, nice and cheap hotels, good food and some really nice resorts to have a tropical beach resort holiday right next to Singapore. Like Bintan, the island is accessible from Singapore by frequent ferriers.

For some of the best hotels and resorts in Batam, refer to this blog post : Best Hotels and Resorts in Batam Island.

Bintan

Bintan is an Indonesian Island just 45 kilometers Southeast of Singapore. There are hotels and resorts in the island catering to tourists and the most famous resort area here is Bintan Resorts or Bintan Lagoi. This is an area on the northern most side of Bintan separated from the rest of the island with a forest. There are mostly luxury resorts here. It takes only 55 minutes to reach Bintan Resorts from Singapore. The ferry leaves Singapore from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and arrives to Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Terminal.

Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru or simply JB has always been a popular weekend getaway from Singapore where you can eat cheap food and have your shopping. Just across the causeway from Singapore has not been very interesting for the casual tourist but recently JB has added a few interesting resorts and amusement parks which makes it a nice weekend getaway destination now. Danga World Theme Park (an amusement park more suitable for children), Danga World Petting Zoo and Legoland Malaysia (again more appealing to kids under 11).

Desaru

Desaru offers the nearest beach weekend getaway from Singapore. The beach, which is on the South China Sea, is located just 88 kilometers east of Johor Bahru/Malaysia. Thanks to newly opened Senai–Desaru Expressway (Highway E22) and cable-span bridge across Sungai Johor, it is only 1:30 hours drive away from Johor Bahru and around 2:15 hours away from Singapore! You can also take a public bus to Desaru and a boat service is available from Changi Point, Singapore to Tanjong Belungkor, Malaysia.

Desaru’s main attraction is its clean, sandy beaches spanning almost 22 km and shallow and clear water. For more information about this destination, refer to Desaru beach weekend getaway from Singapore.

Tioman Island
Tioman Island is one of the most beautiful tropical islands of Malaysia and is a very popular getaway destination from Singapore. Excellent for swimming, snorkeling, skuba diving, trekking or simply doing nothing, this underdeveloped island is an excellent place to cut-off from modern life. There is no road system on the island so the resorts are accessible only by boat. It takes an 8 hour bus + ferry ride or a 45 minutes flight to get to Tioman from Singapore.

For more information on Tioman, check our Tioman Island articles.

Tioman Island (Panuba Inn Resort seen here)
Sibu Island

Just 3 hours away from Singapore with a bus + half an hour boat travel, Malaysia's Sibu Island is the closest island to Singapore for skuba diving and it offers excellent skuba diving and snorkeling experience. Sibu is actually an archipielago made up of Pulau Sibu Besar (base island), Pulau Sibu Tengah, Pulau Sibu Hujung, Pulau Kukus and Pulau Tinggi. Less popular and known than Tioman Island, it takes a less tiring journey to arrive Sibu Island.

For more information on Sibu Island, you can check our Sibu Island : A Tropical Heaven Right Next to Singapore article.

Pulau Ubin
Pulau Ubin is in fact is an island of Singapore but it it is quite different compared to mainland Singapore so we have included it here. Unlike Sentosa Island, this small island just in the north east of  Singapore is largely underdeveloped and accommodates the last kambung (village) in Singapore. It is a great place to get away from crowded Singapore island, cycle and witness how Singapore was in the past.

Many Singaporeans visit Pulau Ubin for a day trip but you can also stay in Pulau Ubin.

Where to stay in Bintan?

Bintan Island of Indonesia is just 20 kilometers south of Singapore and one of the most popular and nearest weekend getaway destination from Singapore. Compared to its neighbour Batam Island, Bintan is more popular and more known as family oriented holiday destination. Since there are ferries to the island from Johor Bahru, it is also a popular tourist destination for residents of this Malaysian City.

The answer to where to stay in Bintan question is quite easy for many : Bintan Resorts. This area is very different from the rest and is a man-made holiday destination on the island.

Bintan Resorts (Lagoi)
One of the best and nearest family oriented holiday destination near Singapore, Bintan Resorts cover entire northern coast of Bintan Island and is accessible from Singapore with a 45 minutes ferry ride departing from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. The area is separated from other parts of Bintan and is quite well developed in terms of tourism with its high quality beach resorts, villas and golf courses. The beaches are beautiful with white sands and most of the resorts are built to a high standard. If you are heading to here, a serene and nice holiday is guaranteed but do not expect to experience real Bintan here.

If you have time, Tanjung Pinang (the largest town in Bintan) is 2-hours drive from Lagoi where you can enjoy cheap shopping and tasty local fare.

Bintan Resorts (Lagoi) is 55 minutes ferry ride from Singapore. The largest town on Bintan, Tanjung Pinang, is just
2 hour drive from here.

Tanjung Pinang
Tanjung Pinang, on south of Bintan island, is the biggest town on Bintan Island and has ferry and speedboat connections to Batam, Singapore (40 km away), and Johor Bahru. Tanjung Pinang is a trading, shipping, shopping and tourism "seafood" center in the region. The town has many seafood restaurants, and prices are low by Singaporean (or even Western) standards.

Although the town is not the most popular place to stay in Bintan for an ordinary tourist, it is a departure point to other Riau Islands and fishing trips. For hotels in the town, you can check Tanjung Pinang Bintan Hotels page.

Trikora Beach
Trikora, on the northeastern coast of Bintan, is a long stretch of separate beaches, with beaches numbered from south to north as one to four (satu, dua, tiga, empat in Indonesian). The best known is Trikora Beach Four (Trikora Empat), which is the northernmost bit, right next to the "border" with Bintan Resorts. Bintan Agro Beach Resort & Spa is one of the most popular resorts on Bintan Island catering mostly to locals and Singaporeans.

For other hotels and resorts in Trikora, you can check Bintan Trikora Beach Hotels page.

If you are heading to Bintan from nearby Singapore, try to take advantage of many Bintan travel deals advertised on coupon sites. Most of these includes ferry plus hotel stay with some extras like shopping tours and dinner coupons.

For more details on Bintan Resorts, check our post about the place : Bintan Resorts (Lagoi).

Where to stay in Batam?

Batam Island of Indonesia is just 20 kilometers to the south of Singapore. The island is known as an industrial hub with large shipyards and oil service sector but it is a popular tourist destination from nearby Singapore and Johor. Main lure of Batam is Batam's night life, a naughty and sleezy one, or this was the case until a few years back. Since casinos are down and steps are taken to reduce sex tourism in Batam, a family oriented tourism is developing.

If you are heading to Batam from nearby Singapore, try to take advantage of many Batam travel deals advertised on coupon sites. Most of these includes ferry plus hotel stay with some extras like shopping tours and dinner coupons.

In this article we will focus on some of the most popular places to stay in Batam instead of individual hotels. Before that let us answer the main question : Bintan or Batam? If you are looking for a hotel stay with cheap shopping, eating and hotels pool will work for you to do swimming head to Batam. If you are looking for a resort with decent beach and all-inclusive, head to Bintan.

Batam Island Map
Nagoya
Nagoya, a.k.a Lubuk Baja, is the main town of Batam and is the city center where you can find most hotels, food or entertainment. The Nagonya town center is closed to Harbour Bay (Jodoh) which is a short drive from the center. Batam's biggest mall Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall is here with Matahari department store. Another popular, probably more popular, mall is Batam City Square (BCS). Many tourist from nearby Singapore comes here to shop for local products and every day items which are significantly cheaper compared to Singapore. Hypermart in Nagoya Hill Mall and Mega Mall are quite popular. The Nagoya Entertainment District here is Batam's most notorious place of sleazy nightlife.

Nongsa Resorts
Nongsa Resorts on the northeastern tip of Batam is the answer to Bintan Lagoi on the neighbouring island of Bintan. The area has some resorts aiming mainly to tourists from Singapore. It is not as good and exclusive as Bintan Lagoi (Bintan Resorts) but some of the best resorts in Batam are here. A ferry ride from Singapore to here takes around 35 minutes.

For resorts in Nongsa Resorts, refer to Batam Nongsa Resort Hotels page.

Montigo Resorts Nongsa
5-Star Montigo Resorts Nongsa is one of the best resort in Batam and near Singapore.
Sekupang
Sekupang city has a brand new harbour front with modern facilities and is accessible from Singapore via direct ferry. Batam is a golfers paradise and he harbour at Sekupang is a popular destination for golfers playing at Indah Puri, Batam Hills and Southlinks.

For hotels and resorts in Sekupang refer to Batam Sekupang Hotels page.

Waterfront City

This place is technically in Sekupang. It's name may have city but this place is a tourist oriented development with 2 hotels and nothing more. This is a popular getaway from Singapore with two large hotels and enough to keep you busy just for a weekend. Indeed since many people come here to do nothing, the place offers a pleasant escape.

There are two places here to stay. Harris Resort Batam offers relatively cheap family holiday with large pool, bowling alley and restaurants. It has a beach but you cannot swim there so just head to somewhere else if you need a beach resort. Holiday Inn Resort Batam is one of Batam's best branded hotel with a large pool and a lot for kids offering a nice family holiday.

Where to stay in Pulau Ubin?

Situated in the north east of Singapore, Pulau Ubin (Ubin Island) is one of the last rural areas to be found in Singapore, with an abundance of natural flora and fauna. It offers a great weekend getaway from the busy life in Singapore.

Many visitors of Ubin Island leave it with the last boat and leave the island to about a hundred villagers living there. But you can also stay in Pulau Ubin. There is Celestial Resort Pulau Ubin on the island. Located at a 5 minute stroll thru the“Secret Garden”right of the Ubin Jetty, this Pulau Ubin resort offers a holiday house looking over Changi Coast of Singapore's main island.

Where to stay in Malacca?

Thanks to a rich colonial past, thriving Peranakan heritage and excellent Nyonya fare Malacca is Malaysia’s historical pride. Also spelt Melaka, the state  is  one  of  the  country’s  tourism  industry’s  trump  cards.  First established  in  the  fourteenth  century,  it  quickly  gained fame under the auspices of founder Parameswara, a Sumatran prince. Conquered by the Portuguese,  Dutch  and  British,  remnants  of  their  rule  can  be  seen throughout  the  wellpreserved  town  centre,  from  Porta de Santiago (the remaining  gate  of  the  Portuguesebuilt  A’Famosa  fort)  to  the  nearby Dutchconstructed  Stadhuys.  Malacca’s  a  small  town  so  exploring  it  is fairly easy on foot as you’re never too far from touristworthy sights.

Hot  and  humid  throughout  the  year  with occasional rainfall, Malacca is perfect  for  yearround  travel.  Temperatures  range  between  30°C 35°C  during  the  day  and  27°C    29°C  at  night,  though  after rainfall it could  be  cooler.  Rainfall  occurs  mostly  between  October  and  March while May to July remains the state’s drier months. Wear light clothing, good walking shoes and sunglasses; and you’d be remiss to forget your sun block-the higher the SPF the better!

Here in this post we will talk about where to stay in Malacca. Instead of writing about individual hotels in Malacca, we will talk about the main areas to accommodate.

Malacca City

Malacca City’s Dutch colonial square is perhaps its most striking feature. The terracotta-red buildings along this riverfront are unique due to their louvred windows, chunky doors and wrought iron grilles plus the imposing Stadhuys is the oldest surviving Dutch building in the East. The administrative capital of Malacca, a short walk over a concrete bridge at the southern end leads to Jalan Hang Jebat, which plays host to the Jonker Walk night market as well as a vast collection of antique shops. Southeast from the Stadhuys is the remnants of the Portuguese A’Famosa fort – the lone Porta de Santiago gate.

Jalan Hang Jebat

A bridge at the southern end of Dutch Square leads to Jalan Hang Jebat. It’s commonly known as Chinatown or Jonker Street and used to be famous for its collection of antique stores that sell Nyonya porcelain, Victorian mirrors, wooden opium beds, Peranakan blackwood furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl and more. Within the area is Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (also known as Melaka’s Millionaire’s Row) which is lined with opulent 19th century ancestral homes and mansions. The fun and zingy Friday-and Saturday Jonker Walk night market, that sells everything from tasty treats to cheap keepsakes, takes place here.

For hotels in Jalan Hang Jebat, their room prices and customer reviews you can visit  Malacca Jonker Street hotels page.

Ayer Keroh

Situated just off the highway to KL, about 11km northeast of Malacca City, is Ayer Keroh. It’s known for its contrived tourist attractions ranging from the Melaka Zoo, with a worthwhile night-viewing safari, and the Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary, to a go-kart track and the Ayer Keroh Golf & Country Club – the longest golf course in Malaysia. Housing a 359ha forest, there’s also a Taman Mini Malaysia Complex (13 traditional houses, representing Malaysian states, with works of art and culture in each) and a Taman Mini ASEAN, showcasing abodes of Asian nations. Take bus no. 19 from Malacca City to get here.

Tanjung Kling

20 minutes from Malacca City, about 9km northwest, the journey to Tanjung Kling is a pleasant drive past beachside kampungs. It used to be a mucky, muddy seaside strip with passing tankers spoiling the beach. However, recent progress (the development of seafront apartment complexes and a cleaned-up beach) has resulted in a new and improved Tanjung Kling. These days you’ll see people on the reclaimed beach sunning, flying kites and there’s even a horse riding operator here. Plus, Tanjung Kling’s the best spot in Malacca for seafood with several top notch restaurants and hawker stalls along the roadside at Pantai Kundor.

For hotels in Tanjung Kling, their room prices and customer reviews you can visit  Malacca Tanjung Kling hotels page.

Malacca Raya

Situated within Malacca City, Taman Melaka Raya isn’t a separate area in and of itself. It’s popular as the town’s favoured food centre especially since, besides a few places in Chinatown, it’s hard to find many restaurants open late at night. It used to house the 60m Eye on Malaysia (which provided 360-degree views of the town centre) until it was dismantled due to a legal dispute. None the worse for the wear, the area will soon see the assembly of a newer, larger Ferris wheel called the Malaysia Eye (December 2011). Malacca’s
two biggest shopping malls – Mahkota Parade and Dataran Pahlawan – are located here.

The Century Pines Resort Cameron Highlands Malaysia Review

Away from the hustle and bustle of big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Cameron Highlands offers a perfect mountain getaway for those looking for an escape from never ending tropic heat. Tanah Rata is the biggest town in Cameron Highlands and has the most number of facilities and amenities.

The Century Pines Resort is situated in Tanah Rata and houses 153 snug guestrooms with comfortable modern facilities, providing a suitable getaway for vacationers looking for a cooler climate retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. In The Right Room episode below, , find comfort in the great outdoors of Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, where they relish in the fresh pine-scented mountain air. The enthusiastic pair then visit attractions which the whole family will enjoy, such as a tea plantation and a strawberry farm near the resort.

Some of the modern facilities in The Century Pines Resort includes a SPA and a restaurant serving local and international food.

Room Review
The rooms do not have aircon but instead they have a central air ventilation system which serves the natural pine cleaned fresh air of Cameron Highlands into the rooms. The rooms are designed like a mountain hotel room with wooden floors, water-colored wood carvings on the walls. The room has a TV, a nice and comfortable couch in front of the windows.

The single beds are super-single so they are wider than your typical single hotel beds. The bed is firmer than usual and comes with only one pillow but there are some spare pillows in the wardrobe.

The bathroom is large and clean. Interesting thing about it is that the bathroom is divided into compartments which will avoid family queues in the morning.

Cameron Highlands
Being in the mountains, Cameron Highlands has a quite cool weather for a location in tropics. The weather here can be seen as eternal spring where the temperature pattern is similar to a spring day in a typical 4-season climate.

In Cameron Highlands it is a must to visit one of the tea plantations. There are several of them around the hotel. The views here are picture perfect and great to take outdoor photos. Another must in Cameron Highlands is to visit strawberry farms where you can pick the freshest strawberries with prices you cannot get anywhere else.

The hotel and Cameron Highlands offer a nice family oriented getaway from cities which will also provide a great break from the tropical heat in Malaysia and Singapore.

Flights to Langkawi from Singapore

Langkawi island off the northwestern shores of Malaysia is a very popular island getaway destination from Singapore.

Currently there are 2 airlines offering flights from Singapore to Langkawi: AirAsia and SilkAir (when you book Singapore - Langkawi flight from Singapore Airlines, it is operated by SilkAir).

AirAsia is your only budget flight option to Langkawi from Singapore. The low cost carrier flies daily between Langkawi and Singapore. The flight from Singapore to Langkawi usually takes of around 11:00 in the morning and the flight from Langkawi to Singapore usually takes of around 08:00 PM in the evening.

SilkAir, a regional arm of Singapore Airlines, flies to Langkawi in all weekdays except Monday and Wednesday.

The flight between Singapore and Langkawi takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The flights operate between Singapore Changi Airport and Langkawi International Airport.

Other than Singapore, there are direct flights to Langkawi from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Hat Yai, and Phuket.

If you cannot find direct flights from Singapore to Langkawi, you have several options: You can for example fly from Singapore to Penang and from there take a ferry to Langkawi which is about a 2 hours travel time. Or you can fly to KL first and take a flight from there to Langkawi.

Langkawi is almost 13 hours bus travel away from Johor Bahru so if you are not really a budget traveler, your first option should be flying there (unlike Penang Island Langkawi is not connected to mainland Malaysia so after bus, you still need to take a ferry). If you think flying is expensive, you can take a sleeper train to Kuala Kedah and then take a taxi to ferry terminal.

How to find cheap flights to Langkawi from Singapore?
Well, since AirAsia and Tigerair are the only budget airlines flying directly from Singapore to Langkawi, it is best to check their web sites first. If you are lucky, you can even catch a flight promotion for Langkawi.

If this option is closes, the second best option might be to fly budget to Penang or Kuala Lumpur and then take a ferry from Penang to Langkawi. JetStar, Tiger Airways and AirAsia are the budget carriers flying directly from Singapore to Penang Island. JetStar and AirAsia are the only two budget operators flying to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore.

If you are planning a holiday in Langkawi, you can also try your luck to find a package deal in one of Singapore based deal sites such as Deal.com.sg. From time to time, there are deals for Langkawi where hotel stay plus a return flight can be purchased for less than 200 SGD.

Angsana Bintan

Singapore may be a tropical island but thanks to its heavy urbanization it lacks beaches and resorts buried in lush forest settings. For many in the city state, Malaysian and Indonesian islands near Singapore are the way to go to have a relaxed getaways from the urban jungle. Of these islands, Indonesia's Bintan and Batam Islands are the most popular thanks to their proximity to Singapore. Bintan Island of Indonesia for example is just 45 minutes away from Singapore by ferries departing from Singapore's Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Bintan Island is mostly known for its family friendly, luxury and expensive resorts housed in the northern coast of the island facing Singapore. This region, known as Bintan Resorts or Lagoi, is separated from the rest of the island by a tick forest and check points and is quite different than the "rest" of Bintan. There are several high-end hotels and resorts here such as The Nirwana Gardens Bintan Resort, Club Med Ria Bintan, Bintan Lagoon Resort and Bintan Lodge.

Nested on the white sands of Tanjong Said Bay, Angsana Bintan is one of the two high-end hotels in Bintan's Lagoi area operated by The Banyan Tree Group. The 4.5-Star luxurious hotel shares the same private beach with its all-villa sister, Banyan Tree Bintan. Angsana Bintan offers 106 rooms and suites, a majority of which offer a balcony view overlooking the South China Sea and offers a great place for a weekend getaway from the busy city life of Singapore.

Where is Bintan Island?

island known as Lagoi. - Source : WikiTravel Bintan Island
Angsana Bintan is a hidden paradise. You will not be able to believe that you were in Singapore just an hour ago and you have arrived to this white sandy beach and clear turquoise ocean with a simple ferry ride. The hotel is directly by the beach and ocean and if you choose to stay in a room viewing the ocean, in a few short hours you will directly get "lost" in the paradise. It is an ideal location for relaxed, lazy and laid back tropical island holiday and best appreciated during one of those long holiday weekends in Singapore.

The facilities are not as luxurious as 5-star hotels but for the location and the holiday experience, the prices are in the reasonable range. The cheapest of the rooms offered, Superior Rooms, are priced from USD 210 per night and comes with 2 beds. Deluxe Queen Bed and Twin Bed rooms are from USD 260 per night. Not bad if you think that you do not need to pay for an airline ticket to arrive to this paradise. The hotel also offers 3 types of suites : One Bedroom Suite (From USD 340 per night),  Two Bedroom Suite (From USD 420 per night) and Angsana Suite (From USD 530 per night).

The hotel regularly offers romance and honeymoon packages.

Banyan Tree Bintan

Bintan Island can be divided into 2 areas: The northern coast of Bintan called Bintan resorts and the rest. The rest is a typical Indonesian border island with fishing villages, electronic factories and local resorts. These two areas are separated from each other with a thick forest and check-points and are worlds apart in terms of infrastructure, security and utilities available.

Entire northern coast of Bintan Island is generally referred as Bintan Resorts (also known as Lagoi) and is full of expensive and luxury resorts catering mostly to tourists from nearby Singapore (45 minutes from Singapore by ferry). For most tourists, Bintan Island is a serene getaway from busy and crowded Singapore where they can simply enjoy lazy hours at the beach, spa, pool; play golf and pass time with water sports.

There are several high-end hotels in Bintan Island’s resort area such as The Nirwana Gardens Bintan Resort, Club Med Ria Bintan, Bintan Lagoon Resort and Bintan Lodge. The Banyan Tree Group operates two high-end hotels in Bintan Resorts area which share the same private beach: Villa only Banyan Tree Bintan and Angsana Bintan offering queen rooms, 1- and 2-bed suites.

Banyan Tree Bintan is located on a hill overlooking the South China Sea and the private beach. This is an all-villa resort and if you can afford it, it offers an unforgettable getaway. Reaching the resort is quite easy from Singapore: A high-speed catamaran will take 45 minutes to arrive from Singapore Tanah Merah ferry terminal to Bintan.

Banyan Tree Bintan resort is built in a lush rainforest with 50 to 100 years old trees nestled along the shore. The villas in the resort are built on stilts and inspired by the traditional fishing villages on Bintan Island. They offer tree-top experience just right next to nature. The resort offers Pool Villa - Seaview (From USD 390 per night), Pool Villa - Seafront (From USD 425 per night), Pool Villa - On-the-rocks (from USD 460 per night), One Bedroom Banyan Pool Villa (from USD 680  per night), Two Bedroom Banyan Pool Villa (from USD 765 per night) and Spa Pool Villa (from USD 1,130 per night).

The resort is designed to be secluded. As we have written above, do not expect to experience local culture or visit rest of Bintan Island since the resort area is not designed in that way. If you are looking for a laid back, serene and lazy holiday in a tropical paradise which is not very far away, this resort is for you.

For those who are looking for a more reasonably priced experience, you can also try Banyan Tree Bintan’s sister on the same private beach : Angsana Bintan. Superior rooms start from From USD210 per night.
