10 Reasons to Travel to Vietnam

Everyone who loves to explore should put Vietnam in the first place in their travel program. Vietnam is really an authentic country, with impressive landscapes, colorful and dynamic cities, warm and gentle people, and a good blend of old and new.

1. Vietnam is relatively unspoiled by tourism

After hundreds of years of struggle, under the invasion of foreign states and lived in poverty, Vietnam, today opened its doors to foreigners, tourists and investors, welcoming them with a glamorous face and hospitality.

Vietnam is a new country in terms of tourism. Unlike Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, you will see smaller number of tourists walking around the streets. Vietnam is not as spoiled as the countries with more tourists. Local people are genuinely interested in tourists. They want to chat to you with their little English.

2. Vietnam is safe

Vietnam is a pretty safe country to visit even for women traveling alone. Actually, I can say from my own perspective that I have not felt unsafe anywhere in South Asia. Usually the countries with majority Buddhist population are safe.

Most of the Vietnamese were farmers and most of them were born in the villages. The communist government seems to have done its utmost to make the premise a safe place. Considering the recent history of the country, there is a warm attitude to many tourists, especially Americans. They will wrap up the pain of the past, look into the future.

3. Vietnam is relatively cheap to travel

Vietnam, offering super luxurious travel comfort, offers the possibility to travel with a very low budget. It is possible to eat for 1 Dollar at a stall on the street, and even if you go to super luxurious restaurants, the prices are still reasonable.

It is possible to travel in Vietnam, a favorite country for backpack travelers, with a daily budget of $ 15. Almost everywhere in the country there are convenient hotels, guest houses and hostels. For example, the 4-star Sunway Hotel Hanoi in Hanoi costs $ 49 per night for 2 people.

4. Ha Long Bay

Imagine over 2,000 limestone cliffs rising from the emerald waters of Tonkin Gulf to the sky! This is Halong Bay, Vietnam's most popular tourist destination in the world. According to the, Vietnam remains in a difficult situation with the Chinese, and the gods send a dragon for help. This dragon spouts jade and jewels from its mouth and forms the limestone rocks that we see today, and through these obstacles the Chinese can not enter.

Cruise ship experience among these interesting limestone cliffs is a unique experience. Halong Bay is beautiful and charming and this place is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is located 4 hours from Hanoi, the beautiful capital city in the north of the country.

5. Unique Vietnam Culture

Vietnam has one of the oldest cultural heritage in South East Asia. History of Vietnam goes back to the Bronze Age, and the area was more than 1,000 years in Chinese domination. Therefore, the influence of Chinese culture on the culture of the country is great.

Following the independence from China, Vietnam was under the influence of the Khmer empire for a while. In the French colonial period, European culture interacted. In Vietnam, where the Latin alphabet is used, the values of old, atelier, social and family values, handicrafts and labor are of great importance. Also in this exotic culture of Far East, where we are a stranger, dragons and turtles have an important place. In addition, the bamboo plant and lotus flower are considered sacred.

6. Vietnamese people are warm and friendly

Like many neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnamese people are friendly, gentle and friendly. When you look at your eyes, a smile appears in their faces, they are very elegant and sweet. I have not encountered anyone who is trying to attract people and to sell something in shopping places and markets. The same is true when you walk around the historic district of Hanoi's tradesmen. Everyone is busy engaging in performing arts and taking care of incoming customers.

When visiting historical sites and temples, everyone respects and respects the rules without loud noise. You can easily start chatting with whatever you want in almost everywhere. The farmers living around the Mekong Delta are very impressive with their productivity and hard work. It's also amazing to play crafts and instruments.

7. Mekong

The Mekong River is a river that is the lifeblood of Southeast Asia with a length of about 4350 km. The adventure of a dive starts from Tibet in the eastern Himalayan Mountains at an altitude of 5,224 meters and flows into the South China Sea beyond 6 Southeast Asian countries like Yunnan (China), Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

The Mekong Delta, which the Mekong River meets with the sea on Vietnam soil, makes this geographical region of more than 7 million people unique. With white sandy beaches, tropical forests, small villages and towns scattered among the waterfalls, this is a very interesting and rich geography.

8.Vietnamese Coffee

If you're a coffee lover like me, I'm sure you'll love Vietnam's coffee culture. Vietnam is the second largest coffee producer in the world, though not very well known. So it has an important place in the culture of the country. Although I usually drink milk and sugar, I prefer the simple one (ca phe den).

It is possible to have delicious coffee and sit in a tree shade or park even on street benches. Try the ice-cold cup. Take care of the addresses Café Mai (79 Le Van Huu, Hanoi) or Highland Coffee (26 Le Loi, Ho Chi Minh City).

9. Extraordinary caves

I like caves, and in every country I go, I like to visit immediately when I hear that you are a cave. Vietnam is one of the largest and most impressive caves in the world. Think of a geography, you are discovering the world's greatest cave more recently. This is Vietnam. Sơn Đong Cave was discovered in 2009 yet.

After Phong Nha Cave, 44.5 km long, which is the other famous cave of the country, Sơn Đong Cave was located in the world press. The width of some rooms of Sơn Đòng Cave is 5 km. Imagine how many airplanes you can imagine! Those who go to Ha Long Bay know the beauty of Surprise Cave cave.

10. Vietnamese cuisine and tropical fruits

Whether you like to eat fruit or not, Everybody gets to know the tropical fruits that make a different sensation other than a taste that is known before. This is my testimony. Mangosten, dragon fruit, rambutan are my favorites.

Today it is possible to see Vietnamese restaurants in many cities of the world. The development of the culinary culture and the diversity of delicacies. Seafood, chicken and meat have an important place in the Vietnamese cuisine where fresh vegetables are often used. If you love Hele seafood, South East Asia is already in heaven itself! Although we are very conservative in taste, coming to taste without local tastes makes the trip incomplete. At least enjoy a Pho soup.

Vietnam hotel deals in Hoi An by Agoda.com

Hoi An is a beautiful city in Vietnam located approximately halfway down Vietnam's long, S-shaped coastline, just south of Da Nang. It is said that Japanese mariners in the 18th century believed that Hoi An was the heart of all of Asia. The Old Town of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to UNESCO, the town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site.

The town has been a strategic ocean port since at least the  mid-1400’s, and was officially founded in 1595 as a result of the increased trade policies of the Nguyen Dynasty, which ruled Southern Vietnam from 1558-1777. During this time European powers were exploring and trading with an enthusiasm never before seen, and the mystical orient proved an irresistible destination. The town grew fast and quickly became the busiest and richest port in the region, and much evidence of these developments still remains.

Today, however, the town is known mostly for its thriving tourism industry, and rightly so – the beautiful architecture and narrow streets have hardly changed since the old days, and it’s easy to take an evening stroll down Bạch Đằng Street and imagine pacing the route 200 years in the past. It seems that there is a restaurant, coffee shop or store on every corner, each one offering a delicious meal, perfect beverage, or unique souvenir.

Hoi An

New Year deals to Vietnam’s Tet Festival

Vietnamese New Year, more commonly known by its shortened name Tết, is by far the most important celebration in the Vietnamese year. Tet is a national holiday that marks the arrival of spring, traditionally seen as a time of renewal and preparation for the year ahead. Although there are many general customs and traditions that everyone follows, an interesting aspect of the holiday is that it is celebrated differently in various regions throughout the country. Some regions celebrate longer, some observe customs that others do not, while others prefer certain types of food not eaten elsewhere.

But no matter where in Vietnam one ends up, Tet is a time of high spirits and active communities. Temples and houses are decorated with trees, flowers, and calligraphy, many to welcome those that have sometimes traveled great distances to see their families.

Generally speaking, Tet celebrations start ramping up a few weeks before the holiday, as people run around shopping, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of errands so they can enjoy the holiday stress-free. The night before the first day – February 9th this year – streets and courtyards around the country will be full of furnaces and fires of all sizes where celebrants will burn paper money and other objects as a symbolic offering to their ancestors. February 10 will see many people visiting relatives on their father’s side, and February 11 is time to visit relatives on their mother’s side. The final day, February 12, is reserved for visits to teachers, who are held in high regard in Asian cultures.

There are plenty of other customs and traditions that one can see during Tet – offerings of fruit and plants are made on family altars, gifts of all kinds are given to friends and neighbors, special snacks and meals are prepared, and money is given to children. There are also plenty of things one should not do, such as clean house (as it represents sweeping away good luck), eat duck or shrimp, say or do negative things, or refuse any gifts offered. Be careful!

Visiting Vietnam during Tet is an amazing experience in a distinctive country. The hotel deals below allow travelers to participate in the celebrations in some of Vietnam’s most notable, colorful, noisy and enjoyable Tet destinations. And remember: Chúc mừng năm mới! (Happy New Year!)

Kenya Airways boosts South East Asian footprint with new code share deal

Kenya Airways has entered into a code share agreement with Vietnam Airlines as it works towards expanding its footprint in the South East Asian market.

The agreement is expected to provide a framework for partnership between Kenya Airways and Vietnam Airlines that will see them market and sell one another’s flights as if they were their own.

The two airlines, which are both members of the Sky Team alliance, have signed an agreement and are currently activating a reciprocal code share agreement.

Under the agreement with Vietnam Airlines, Kenya Airways passengers will be able to travel via Bangkok on to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam and vice versa daily. While Vietnam Airlines will code share on daily Kenya Airways service between Bangkok and Nairobi.

Kenya Airways Group Managing Director and CEO Dr. Titus Naikuni said the partnership would enable its customers to access more destinations in the Asia, while also giving an opportunity to Vietnamese passengers to access the 47 destinations flown by KQ in Africa.

Kenya Airways Boeing 777-200ER
A Kenya Airways Boeing 777-200ER lands at Hong Kong International Airport in 2012.
The agreements with the two airlines follow a similar deal signed earlier this year with Saudia Airlines and Korean Air. This brings to 17 code share agreements that Kenya Airways has signed with other international carriers so far.

Besides giving passengers a wider choice of options for travel, the code share agreements also provide an opportunity for the airline to expand its global operations without necessarily flying its equipment to all the destinations.

Kenya Airways, a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, is a leading African airline flying to 59 destinations worldwide, 47 of which are in Africa and carries over three million passengers annually. In Asia, Kenya Airways flies to India, Thailand, China and Hong Kong.

Hotel in Saigon - Majestic Hotel Saigon

Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City? Since I visit this city a lot, many ask me this question. I think I can recommend more than one place depending on your budget but if you can extend it a little bit you should definitely try Majestic Hotel Saigon on the Riverside. I have stayed  in this 5-star hotel in one of my business trips to Ho Chi Minh City, The hotel is one of the most popular 5 star hotel in Saigon and is housed in a large and beautiful French colonial era building constructed in 1925. It is in the city center on the riverside so many attractions of Saigon are within walking distance. The 7 km taxi ride from airport to the hotel costed around 160,000 Vietnam Dong which is less than 8 USD.

Before we have rushed to our meeting, we had a chance to have breakfast on the hotel's roof which has a very nice view of Saigon river. In the evening, the rooftop bar, M. Bar (Majestic Bar) on the 8th floor  is worth a visit and has I think the best view of Saigon River. But since the hotel is in the center, it is better to head to the Saigon night life instead of closing yourself into hotel facilities.

Majestic Hotel Saigon well deserves the "Magestic" in its name. The building is gorgeous both from outside and inside. And since it is built well before the tiny hotel room ages, it offers very nice and comfortable rooms which worth the money. The building went through many usages and owners and the hotel was the 1st Vietnamese managed Hotel to be promoted to 5 star on February 29th 2007. I have paid, sorry my company has paid, 160 USD per night for a five star night in this hotel's colonial superior rooms which worth the money.

Majestic Hotel Saigon is one of the most popular 5 star  hotel in Saigon.
The hotel has a very nice One half of the building offers a stunning view of the Saigon River, while the other half overlooks the swimming pool. There are eight food, drink, and entertainment establishments, offering everything from European and Asian cuisine to cocktails at a piano bar. Throughout its rich history, the hotel has been host to famous authors, heads of state, the Japanese Imperial Army, and espionage agents.

The hotels main feature which makes it ideal to stay is its location. Just walk out in the night and Saigon's beautiful nights are within the reach of your walk. And the staff is very helpful and always smiling people which makes the service quite well in the hotel. You can and should go out and discover the city and its fantastic Vietnamese Cuisine but Cyclo Restaurant on the ground floor offers traditional Vietnamese Cuisine with amazing Prices and serenade restaurant on 7th floor serving European Cuisine has the view.

Tiger Airways is moving to Terminal 2 adding Hyderabad and Phnom Penh to its destinations

I traveled to Ho Chi Minh City from Singapore yesterday for a short business meeting. Me and boss took a Jetstar flight in the Ho Chi Minh City. I took Tiger Airways from Vietnam to Singapore. Both of these are budget airlines. Taking a budget airline for business trip is getting more common since it significantly reduces the cost of travel. I used to fly by full service carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta or Ho Chi Minh City but this downgrade was acceptable since these are not very long flights. Economic situation is getting worse by every passing year in Asia and since West will quantitative ease forever (or until they burn the house) there is no reason to expect it to get better. I prefer to be paid in the future then to fly on a full service carrier now.

Anyway, there are some news on Tiger Airways front. Tiger will move to its new den from Singapore Budget Terminal to Changi Airport Terminal 2 in the early hours of Tuesday 25 September 2012. This is because the Changi Budget Terminal will be demolished to be redeveloped into Changi Terminal 4 building. So Tiger Airways is not the only one moving out. All airlines currently operating in the Budget Terminal,  Berjaya Air, Cebu Pacific, Firefly, South East Asian Airlines and Tiger Airways, will move their operations to Terminal 2 and will start operations there from 0600 hours on 25 September 2012.

Tiger Airways A 320
Tiger Airways offers budget flights from Singapore to 22 destinations around Singapore.
Photo - Relax.com.sg
Tiger Airways currently flies to 22 destinations in 9 countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, China, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. These destinations are within five-hour radius around Singapore. There will be 2 new destinations added to these this year. Aerial panaroma of Saigon Center and Saigon River from 1955

I have taken the photo below in a museum in Saigon district of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The photo is an aerial panaroma of Saigon Center and Saigon River taken in 1955 a year after Geneva Conference. To make life easier for you to locate where is where in Saigon, I have tagged several 4 places on the photo: Notre Dame Cathedral, old Independence Palace destroyed during an assassination attempt to president by war planes, Ben Thanh Market and Ho Chi Minh City Hall (I guess).

Places to see in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)

I am in Ho Chi Minh City now and as a person having been here many times, it is time to write my little things to do, places to see series about Saigon. Many attractions are concentrated in District 1, officially named Saigon, so a walking tour would make you see many. But a better alternative is cyclo tour. But if you will have one, negotiate the price in advance and clearly without any ambiguity and be careful with your camera and wallet since they can be easily grasped by motorbike riding thieves.

Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica

Saigon city center offers many attractions to visit. I would take Notre-Dame Basilica and Central Post Office as my start point. You may have probably seen the photos of this large cathedral in down town Ho Chi Minh City. Built in 1880 by French, it is a great tourist attraction and a beautiful cathedral from Indochina times. A Saigon photo album is not complete with a photo taken in front of it. Surrounding area is a great place to hang around day and night. It is also walking distance to several other attractions.

All the original construction material of this church was brought from France and the outside bricks came from Marseilles. Vietnam houses the second largest catholic christian population in South East Asia after Philippines and this church is still actively used as the main church of Ho Chi Minh City.

Just next to the cathedral, you will see the beautiful Gothic architectural masterpiece, Saigon Central Post Office. Many pass through this tourist attraction without knowing that it is designed and constructed by great French Gustave Eiffel, architect of Eiffel Tower, in Indochina past of Saigon. It is quite Saigon holiday tradition to send a Vietnam / Saigon post card from Saigon Post Office to loved ones around the world. One of those post cards I have sent to my sister is still on her fridge in Istanbul.

Saigon Zoo And Botanic Gardens
Many Saigon guides will direct you to Reunification Palace or War Remnants Museum from the Notre-Dame Basilica but I will suggest you to take Le Duan Street behind the cathedral all the way up to The Zoo. Saigon Zoo and Botanic Gardens eight oldest Zoo on the planet and a very famous place both for locals and foreigners.

First time I was there, I hand fed the elephants (do not try it yourself it is probably dangerous) and hand fed some deer which was very fun. Other than 260 species of animals and thousands of trees and plants (some of them are a century old), The Zoo also houses Saigon National Museum which keeps a lot of valuable exhibits and documents in two areas: one displays artifacts from the beginning of Vietnam to 1930, and the other displays things about culture and history of Vietnam. This is a great place to pay a visit if you are interested in the long and rich history of Vietnam.

Reunification Palace
This palace is simply known as "President Palace" in Ho Chi Minh City and it was named as Independence Palace until a North Vietnamese Army tank bulldozed through its main gate and ended the Vietnam War. Unified Vietnam renamed it to "Reunification Palace".

On the side of the current palace there was the old "Norodom Palace" built by French colonials in 1873 to be used as the official residence of the governor-general of French Indochina. After French left Vietnam in 1954, the Norodom Palace was handed over to the first president of South Vietnam. Norodom Palace was bombed by two rogue pilots of the South Vietnamese air force in an attempt to assasin the President and badly destroyed! Instead of going to a restoration, this old colonial landmark has been torn down and the structure was built in 1962.

Reunification Palace
The interesting thing about this palace is that it is like a time machine to early 70s. Things are kept so well that you really feel like it was abandoned a few days ago and you are in 1970s. There are several exhibits and photographs about the Vietnam history as well as Vietnam War era. You can read a detailed article about this tourist attraction in Reunification Palace.

The War Remnants Museum

Vietnam is still most known for Vietnam War (they call it American War here) and through some Hollywood movie masterpieces. This museum is mostly about that war and telling the story of the war from the other side. A section displays the results of air raids to Vietnamese Villages with of course full intention of "minimum civilian casuality(!)". You will say "f.ck you" when you hear "minimum civilian casuality" after seeing this part. And if you have somehow realized that South Vietnam is less "green" compared to South Thailand, the cause of this phenomenon is also displayed here: Agent Orange! Unfortunately, vegetation destruction is the least harmful thing this gas did in Vietnam.

Another section is about the life of Viet Kong during the "American War". If you have grown up in the western block of the divided world, you have seen them only a few seconds per movie without any story in the Vietnam War movies. So I was watching "Lost" when I first visited this section and I have named it as "The Others". It details the life of Viet Kong through out the war. I suggest you to read the visitors book. An old American man was writing while I was there and after he left I read what he and several people wrote. He was an American soldier in Vietnam when he was 20 and it was his first time in Saigon since 1974!

When I first came here, there was a section showing the Americans against the war in 60s and other western movements against the war. It was not there or I missed it in my second time. Outside the building there are many war relics, helicopters, bombs, planes, etc.

Ben Thanh Market
Ben Thanh Market is one of the oldest buildings in Saigon and is popular place among tourists seeking Vietnamese handicrafts, textiles, souvenirs, and  local cuisine. Although it worth to see this place it is best to avoid any shopping here if you have time to pay a visit a little outside central Saigon (District 1) . It is a tiring experience to bargain here and always smiling shop owners here shamelessly deploys tricks to depart you and your money as fast as possible. Prices are always 50% - 100% over for you if you are a tourist so you need to hard bargain. But as I said for shopping, if you have choice (most tours unfortunately brings you to this tourist milking place) avoid to shop here and head to Binh Tay Market in Chinatown.

Ben Thanh Market
Binh Tay Market
This market in the Chinatown, is almost a twin of overrated Ben Thanh Market and largely overlooked by tourists. Everything you can buy in Saigon and Ben Thanh Market are sold here (actually they are largely sourced from here). It is very wise to skip the tourist trap Ben Thanh Market and come to Binh Tay if you want to make significant shopping in Saigon. If you know how to bargain and select quality products, Ho Chi Minh City offers great savings on shopping. Everything I wear in Singapore except some work clothes are from here or District 5 other bazaars with 25% of the price I can buy in Singapore.

Back to Ho Chi Minh City

My wife and I have decided to merge this weekend with Hari Raya Puasa holiday on Tuesday and I am flying to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.  I have not been there in the last 2 years but this year and in 2012, I hope I will be there more.  Ho Chi Minh City is a surprisingly entertaining place. It has higher rating in my favourite holiday destinations than Bangkok.

One of the advantages of living in Singapore is to have easy and cheap access to surrounding South East Asian gems. You can easily have a weekend escape to a tourist paradise in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Lao or Cambodia thanks to competition among the low cost airliners. If you are flexible on time, there are usually promotions and with less than 150 SGD, you can buy a return ticket. It is even cheaper nowadays thanks to relatively expensive Singapore Dollar and many coupon sites offering luxury holiday packages with ultra-low prices. For example, I have just checked one of the coupon sites serving to Singapore and the latest deal is $ 288  per pax 4D3N Garden Villa Stay at Elements Boutique Resort in Thai paradise island Koh Samui with Private Pool! The usual price according to the site is $1266. More than 350 people bought so far. Great indeed!

As I have mentioned there are many budget airliner options to holiday destinations from Singapore. Air Asia, Tiger Airways, Jet Star, Firefly to name some.  I used to fly with Tiger Airways but since I had a bad experience with one of rude ground staff in Changi Budget Terminal, I stopped taking flights from there and I started to fly with Australian low-cost carrier Jet star. 2 return tickets from Singapore Changi Airport to Ho Chi Minh City  Tan Son Nhat International Airport cost me 450 Singapore Dollars with 2x20 kg luggage (cost extra 15 SGD per ticket) and 4 seat selections (each seat selection costs 4 SGD) J

Ho Chi Minh City, City Hall
Budget airliners put price on everything extra other than a random seat in a flight but they are still much cheaper than flying with full cost carriers like Singapore Airlines or Vietnam Airlines. As usual I have checked these two for any promotion but there was not any and 2 return tickets cost 800 SGD+ for taking one of them. For 2.5 hours flight to Saigon from Singapore, paying 800 SGD is too much.

This time I have bought our travel insurance from AIA (I usually use DBS). While my wife was extending her personal health insurance, we bought our insurances from the AIA agent. My insurance for 6 days of stay in Vietnam cost me 31 SGD while my wife’s 10 days stay there costs 40 SGD. Vietnam, like many South East Asian countries does not request an insurance when you apply for visa but you should better get a travel insurance since an emergency hospitalization in this region costs surprisingly high and ruin your finances for a long period of time.

Vietnam Memories - Cham towers (Poklongarai Towers) in Ninh Thuan

A couple of years ago I had a chance to take a 5 days long local tour from Ho Chi Mihn City to central Vietnam. On this trip, we have also visited these beautiful buildings called Cham Towers. These towers were built were built to worship King Poklongarai, who had good deeds for the Cham people.

Cham people are an ethnic group in South East Asia with an estimated population of 500,000 people. They are concentrated between the Kampong Cham Province in Cambodia and central Vietnam's Phan Rang-Thap Cham, Phan Thiết, Ho Chi Minh City and An Giang areas.

Poklongarai Towers consist of 3 towers beautifully crafted and decorated with valuable sculptures:

The first one is the Main Tower which is 13.8 meters long, 10.71 meters wide and 20.5 meters high. It was the main site for religious ceremonies. A bust of King Poklongarai was respectfully placed inside the Main Tower for worshiping.
The second one is the Gate Tower at 5.10 meters long, 4.85 meters wide and 5.65 meters high. This was where the king received his guests. The last one, the Fire Tower, at 8.18 meters long, 5 meters wide and 9.31 meters high, was the kitchen.
