Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore Review

It first sounds weird to know that someone living in Singapore stays in a Singapore hotel for holiday. But staycation in Singapore is quite popular especially in the recent few years. For this staycation episode I and my wife have decided to stay in Marina Bay Sands Hotel one of the newest luxury hotels in Singapore. The main reason for the hotel choice was the infamous Sands SkyPark and its infinity pool view of Singapore skyline.

Marina Bay Sands Hotel, or MBS in abbreviation loving Singapore, is the largest hotel in Singapore which occupies a prime land in the Singapore city center area. It is a casino hotel and part of Marina Bay Sands casino complex so called integrated resort,  an euphemism used because of opposition to casinos.

Our 2D1N staycation in Marina Bay Sands Hotel started at the reception which will make you feel how crowded the hotel is. The waiting time in the reception is quite long althogh the registration is quite short. The hotel has 2,500+ rooms (the second largest hotel in Singapore Swiss Hotel Stamford has half the number of rooms!) and it seems like it is 100% full all the time. Other than gamblers, business travelers and non-gambling leisure travelers also prefer the hotel. But despite being in the city center, the hotel is not a place to walk to main Singapore attractions on foot like the ones in Orchard Road.

We have stayed in a Deluxe Room on the 37th floor facing the sea rather than the city. It was our decision to stay this side. The rooms facing the Singapore skyline are popular but I found it tiring to see CBD from my room because I will not feel any “getaway” feeling if I watch my workplace from my hotel room :)

Many luxury hotels in Singapore are old and their age is reflected in the room. The room in MBS looks brand new, very modern and very large even for a 5-Star hotel in Singapore. Other than this large Queen Size bed, there is a nice sofa, large flat screen LCD, very functional business desk and probably a fast WI-FI (I did not bring my laptop with me so never tried internet).

The bathroom is also very large. It is as large as many budget to mid-range hotel rooms in Singapore :) The rain shower, the tube and double sinks are all in 5-star hotel standards.

The mini-bar in the refrigerator was full of everything but be careful with it. It has an automated system which charges you the bottle if you remove it from its place. So that 300++ SGD bottle of wine may be interesting to take out and look at but then you may be charged for it.

For those who need budget drinks and eatery after spending a large sum to MBS (MBS is quite expensive even in expensive Singapore hotel standards). There is a Cold Storage Speciality and 7-Eleven shop in The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and you can buy your drinks and snacks from these places for much cheaper prices. Also, there is a food court to eat on budget in The Shoppes. But the food in this foodcourt is expensive and it is not good. You can walk to La Pau Sat or Marina Square Shopping Mall for better and cheaper food.

You know the main attraction of all Marina Bay Sands casino complex is naturally its casino.  And the hotel is basically a gambler’s inn. But I won’t review this attraction because I have never been to its casino and had no intention to visit it this time also.

The main attraction of the hotel for me was the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark and the infinity pool on the sky park. SkyPark is built 200 meters above the ground, on the top of three 55-storey towers of the hotel.  It is quite large, it has 12,400 meter square space, almost 3 football fields.

SkyPark itself is very beautiful. It has one of the best rooftop views of Singapore (but definitely not the best as it is marketed by the hotel) and is a great leisure chill out place! The infinity pool is one of the best hotel rooftop pools in the world and is definitely one of the most unique. In theory, the pool is open only to hotel guests and their guests. But I have been to this pool before and until recent the entrance check was lousy and I am sure there were many people who were sneaking into the pool although they were not guests. But since November 2012, the pool entrance is very strict and is done through pool access card. As a result, the pool was much less crowded than I have seen before.

The infinity pool is 1.2 meters deep and I could find nothing to do there except watching Singapore from above the sky while immersed into pool water. The pool is quite an experience and although I found it tiring to watch a busy city during a holiday, it is a must do in the hotel. It worth to visit the pool in the early morning when it is empty, in the evening when sun is setting and in the night. Rest of the time it is super crowded with hotel guests who are eager to fill their Weibo, Facebook and Instagram accounts with their photos on the skypark.

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark Infinity Pool

There are 2 fine dining restaurants on the SkyPark: KU DÉ TA Restaurant and Sky on 57. I cannot review this because as a guest who has spended all his budget for the room, I have headed to the food court. Marina Bay Sands hotel restaurants are expensive but if you want to save money there is a food court in the shopping mall (near ice skating). It is also expensive in Singapore standards and as for all tourist places the food is not that good. But a lot cheaper compared to the restaurants and the food is not that bad.

To sum up …

Marina Bay Sands Hotel is definitely a nice 5-star luxury hotel which is quite popular. But this popularity makes it very crowded. It seems like the hotel is 90% booked by wealthy tourists from China and the 10% by others. For this reason, SkyPark, its pool and all facilities are quite crowded. But rooms are quite large and they are liberal about who goes in and out as long as they are going in/out with you. I have been here to visit friends before and you can invite your friends to enjoy the room with you.

Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore Staycation

I am not a fan of staycation in Singapore. Paying a small fortune to an expensive Singapore hotel when home is sitting empty 20 minutes away is not for a stingy person like me. But this is not the only reason I do not like staycation here. I just do not feel I had a holiday (1) if I am not out of a crowded city like Singapore and (2) there is no sea and beach somewhere in my holiday. But I have done staycation in Singapore several times in the past few years for several reasons. And the most recent one was in a very unlikely hotel for staycation: Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

I prefer small, boutique, resort like facilities for staycation which has potential to make me feel like I have left a very crowded city for the nature. So a giant 2,561-room hotel sitting in a skyscraper structure would not be my choice for staycation.  And Marina Bay Sands Hotel is almost in the middle of Singapore's business district. But women rules the man, wife wanted it so we did it.

It was a 2 day 1 night stay in Marina Bay Sands hotel and also my first time as a guest there (although I have been in Marina Bay Sands hotel to visit a friend several times). Here is a short review of the hotel as a staycation location.

Check-in

Marina Bay Sands hotel may be very expensive but it is hugely popular. As I have mentioned before, the hotel is huge. In fact, Marina Bay Sands Hotel is the largest hotel in Singapore in terms of room size. It has twice the room the second largest hotel in Singapore, Swissotel The Stamford Hotel, has. And I think it is almost always 100% full. As a result, check-in is crowded and there are long queues to check-in. And I am not sure why don’t they increase the capacity in check-in because in my opinion the long queues in check-in is a norm in the hotel lobby.

The room

We have stayed in a Deluxe room with a Queen size bed on 37th floor of Tower 2, looking towards the Gardens By The Bay and the sea. For a tourist in Singapore, the rooms looking to the city skyline would have a better view, but I intentionally did not want that side (I did not want a tiring busy city center as a holiday view). Until recently, view towards south, Gardens By The Bay, was a complete mass due to the construction and a sea view littered with commercial ships but the gardens are open now and the view is lovely. Besides, unlike the rooms looking towards the city, these rooms have a nice small balcony which is a nice place to spend some time in the night.

The rooms are, for Singapore standards, large in Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The room comes with a very comfortable queen size bed, a large LCD TV, internet, a puffy chair to lie down completely – a must have for every hotel -, internet and other blab la in a luxury setting (this is a 5 star hotel). I actually did not want to leave the room. The TV set has a decent collection of movies but they charge $20 per movie which is ridiculously expensive in my opinion. So I have sticked to HBO (TV channels are free). The bar is full of everything but they were also expensive.

Marina Bay Sands Hotel Club Room
Marina Bay Sands Hotel Club Room (I will put the photos I have taken later)
IMPORTANT TIP : Be careful with the bar. It automatically charges you if you remove an item from the machine. I did not recognize this first and removed a bottle to look at its brand and put it back. Later when I read the message on the machine telling about this auto-charging and then checking the bottles price (220 SGD!) I was quite shocked but luckily a quick check with lobby revealed that I was not auto charged. Do not touch anything in the bar before checking its price. There is a Cold Storage Speciality branch and a 7-11 in the casino – shopping mall complex and as a commoner in a 5 star hotel, I have bought my poisons from them.

This is a 5 Star hotel and its rooms are 5 star. I am very satisfied with the rooms provided by the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

The facilities and attractions

You know the main attraction of all Marina Bay Sands casino complex is its casino. And the hotel is basically a gambler’s inn. But I cannot review this attraction because I have never been to casino and had no intention to visit it this time also.

The main attraction of the hotel for me was the SkyPark and the infinity pool on the sky park. SkyPark itself is very beautiful. It has one of the best rooftop views of Singapore and is a great leisure chill out place! But since November 1st, the pool entrance is very strict and is done through pool access card. As a result, the pool was much less crowded than I have seen before.

The infinity pool is 1.2 meters deep and I could find nothing in it except watching Singapore from above the sky while immersed into pool water.  The pool is quite an experience and although I found it tiring to watch a busy city during a holiday, it is a must do in the hotel. It worth to visit the pool in the early morning when it is empty, in the evening when sun is setting and in the night.

As a Singapore staycation hotel

Marina Bay Sands hotel is a 5-star hotel and if you have the money, it is worth to stay here. As a staycation destination, it can be tried for once for the sake of its SkyPark, Infinity Pool and the lovely view towards Gardens By The Bay. I am satisfied with it as a hotel and one time staycation hotel in Singapore but I will choose a more resort like hotel, maybe one on Sentosa Island, for the next time.

How to get to Marina Bay Sands?

Marina Bay Sands is one of the two integrated resorts(*) which is the most easily seen and accessed due to its location. Although it is at a very central location (constructed on downtown reclaimed land to be developed in the next ten to twenty years), it may a little be tricky to arrive there if you are not using a taxi. Marina Bay Sands is located at the Bayfront Area and the easiest public transportation mode to there is the newly opened Bayfront MRT Station (MRT = Mass Rapid Transit, used in Singapore for metro/subway) located in the Marina Bay area. This station is on the Circle Line Extension between Promenade and Marina Bay.

If you are coming via Promenade MRT station on the circle line you should leave the train at Bayfront MRT Station, not Marina Bay MRT Station. Second thing you need to be careful is that the final destination of the MRT train you will take from Promenade MRT Station. A train going to Dhoby Ghaut is followed by each MRT train heading to Marina Bay station from the same gate. Pay attention to the screens and take the one going to Marina Bay station if you are heading to Marina Bay Sands.

If you are coming from red line (i.e. Orchard Road, Novena, Newton and above) you can head to the Marina Bay Sands Station, the first station of the red line,  North South Line, and then change to Circle Line (Yellow Line) and reach Bayfront MRT Station.

If you are heading there by taxi, you can calculate the cost by taxi fare calculator. Currently, taxi fare calculator shows a 25 minutes taxi trip which costs 19.41 Singapore Dollars from Singapore Changi Airport to Singapore Marina Bay Sands.

(*) You may ask what integrated resort is. Integrated resort is a casino and facilities sugarcoating it (usually a shopping mall and a gamblers-inn). The term is invented in Malaysia to hide the main attraction from the consciousness and is also adapted in Singapore probably for the same reason).

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark - 360 degree view of Singapore

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark offers the third best panoramic view of Singapore cityscape ( see Top 5 best rooftop views in Singapore ) and paying a visit to this man-made marvel was a top item in my to do list once I arrived back to Singapore. Today, about 2 weeks after my arrival and just several days after visiting the skybridge of Pinnacle@Duxton I had a chance to visit the Sands Singapore Skypark (See the link to how to get to marina bay sands).

Sands Skypark sits on the top of the three 55-storey Marina Bay Sands Hotel towers and offers a 360 degree view of the Singapore city from 200 meters hight. The Skypark is 340 meters long, longer than the Eiffel Tower laid on one side. It is 1.2 hectares.

I had walked there from Bugis Junction but it is only 10 minutes walk away from Promenade MRT Station on the Circle Line. The enrtance fee is 20 Singapore Dollars per adult and 17 SGD per senior. A fast climbing lift from the entrance takes you up to the skybridge in less then 15 seconds.

The Sands SkyPark Public Observation Deck, is open to the public from 10 am-10 pm on Mondays to Thursdays and 10am-11pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The view from Sands Skypark is just fantastic but is also a little depressive as well if you live in Singapore. You can easily see the west, east, north and south ends of Singapore and once more realize how tiny is the island. Unlike Pinnacle@Duxton skybridge, whose east view is blocked by Singapore CBD, there is virtually nothing blocking the observation on the Sands Skypark. But I must admit, the Pinnacle@Duxton provides a better bird's eye view of central Singapore so pay a visit to there even if you have been on the Sands Skypark.

There is a nice SkyBar on the deck but the best seats with the view are almost always occupied and the bar was very crowded when I was there so I did not give a try to a very expensive beer.

20 SGD ticket provides you one time access to the marina bay sands observation deck and a view of Infinity Pool but the access to the pool is restricted to the Marina Bay Sands hotel guests (and their guests). It is not allowed to use tripod on the skypark and opening up an umbrella is also not allowed. The observation deck is also closed when the whether is bad.

Gardens by the Bay, three distinctive waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central spanning a total of 101 hectares, are still under construction. When they are completed, they will be in the heart of Singapore’s new downtown Marina Bay, encircling the Marina Reservoir like a green necklace.
