Boatbay Launches First Boat Rental Marketplace in Asia Pacific and Middle East

Boatbay announced the official launch today of the first boat rental marketplace in Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

Boatbay is a community driven website connecting boat and yacht owners, with people looking to rent, charter or crew watercraft of any kind. Boatbay's focus is on people who wish to rent a boat located within Asia Pacific or the Middle East, which are massive growth markets for travel, leisure and lifestyle.

The average boat owner uses their boat 15 days a year, while spending a fortune in storage and maintenance fees with no way to offset these costs. Boatbay lets an owner earn money out of his or her boat, while making quality lifestyle boating affordable to everyone.

Tim Gundry, co-founder of Boatbay is all too familiar with the costs of boating, "the expenses really add up. The advantage of using Boatbay is that you can offset these expenditures while still enjoying boat ownership".

Boatbay allows boat owners and boat charter companies to list their boat at no cost. All the boat owner has to do is to add some photos, a description, contact information and pricing. The owner can rent or charter their boat with themself as the captain; or select a captain of their choice or rent to someone with a boat license.

Boat renters can browse listings across their chosen destination, find a boat they like, select dates and book. Boatbay takes a small commission on consumed bookings and the owner gets the rest. Boat rental rates vary according to the size of the boat ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

"A wide variety of watercraft can be found on Boatbay" added Tim Gundry. "Boat renters can search and rent a luxury motor yacht in Sydney, a sports fishing boat in Dubai, a 1906 Danish built sailing yacht in Phuket or even a submarine in Bali".

"We are seeing an increasing amount of people taking to the water for a growing variety of reasons, such as hosting a corporate event or birthday party, fishing, water skiing, recreation and family holidays. Recreational boating is a $50 billion dollar industry and Boatbay enriches people's lifestyles by enabling fresh social experiences. A 24 foot boat that costs $35,000 to buy is available on Boatbay for rent as little as $150 a day".

Tim continues, "Boatbay not only improves industry efficiency, but enables transparency and reduces risk. We are building a peer-to-peer driven community which empowers people to write and post user reviews of boat owners, yacht charter companies, and those who rent or charter boats".

He concludes "Boatbay is the airbnb for boating, yachting and people who want to experience a social activity on the water".

Royal Albatross anchors at Resorts World Sentosa

A four-mast luxury tall ship will now feature prominently on the skyline of Singapore’s southern harbour precinct, as the Royal Albatross berthed at its new home at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). A 47-metre long tall ship and the first based in Singapore, the Royal Albatross will be the only luxury tall ship for charter in Asia and is expected to begin service by the middle of 2014.

While tall ships worldwide are largely used for cruising or cadet training, the Royal Albatross is specially designed for luxury corporate and private charter, as well as dockside events. With its distinct large, traditionally-rigged sails and 60,000 LED lights for night illumination, the vessel will add to the integrated resort’s skyline.

Welcoming the luxury tall ship, Mr Roger Lienhard, Senior Vice President of Attractions & Resort Sales at RWS, said: “Anchored at the prime waterfront location of RWS, the Royal Albatross will not only bolster Singapore’s leisure and maritime offerings, it will also augment the diverse range of event spaces at our integrated resort. We look forward to this partnership with Tall Ship Adventure in creating memorable moments for all our guests.”

Tailored guest experiences on board the Royal Albatross
Mr Peter L. Pela, Tall Ship Adventure’s owner and managing director, said: “The Royal Albatross combines the romance of a magnificent tall ship with four masts, 22 sails, state-of-the-art safety, navigation, communications and full audio visual support while maintaining her historical and traditional elegance. Guests will be amazed when they step on board the ship. It’s an exhilarating and unforgettable experience sailing on a luxury tall ship.”
The Royal Albatross is designed for event planners, MICE organisers or even high net worth individuals the opportunity to create experiences on a scale unlike any other, giving their guests something to remember and talk about after they disembark.
“We couldn’t have found a better partner and prominent location to showcase our luxury tall ship, the Royal Albatross. The management and the operations team of RWS has made it possible for everyone in Singapore and its millions of visitors to view the Royal Albatross up close. This is particularly exciting, given Asia’s influence in the MICE event space. We’ve taken our time to find a great partner that understands Asia and most importantly, one that matches our drive, passion and aspiration.” added Mr Pela.

Royal Albatross
Built in 2001, Barquentine (Class-A) type Royal Albatross started her life in Chicago, cruising the Great Lakes prior to the beginning of an epic journey that brought her over 15,000 kilometres from the moderate climes of North America to the tropical waters of South East Asia.
More than 360,000 man hours were invested in redesigning and refitting the ship. With spacious cabins below deck for overnight charters and customisable layouts on deck, a myriad of events can be tailored to meet the needs of clients.

The man at the helm of the ship, Captain Mark Rothwell, is thrilled at her new home, saying: “The Royal Albatross is a true beauty and a perfect addition to the waterfront location, set against the Maritime Experiential Museum at RWS. We are glad to come onboard and look forward serving clients who seek the finer things in life. We are also planning training programmes to groom local talents, as well as creating special dockside activities for guests later this year.”

Royal Albatross Cruising in Singapore
Guests may emberk or disembark at Resorts Worls Sentosa or Singapore Cruise Center. Above, you can see updated route for Royal Albatross. Sailing routes can be adapted to suit client needs. For example, Royal Albatross can sail to Lazarus Island along the southern shores of Sentosa Island, drop anchore in the sheltered waters of Lazarus surrounded by golden beach and enjoy dining in tropical tranquality.

A longer journey would be from Resorts World Sentosa to Bedok Jetty, sailing parallel to Singapore's south eastern shores.

Singapore Yacht Show 2013

Singapore Yacht Show 2013 is gearing up to be a must-see event, that will showcase the latest, greatest and best that the yachting and luxury worlds have to offer. Whether you are a novice to yachting, or have been boating all your life, there really is something for everyone at the show.

Singapore Yacht Show 2013 will be held on 18 – 21 April 2013 at the ONE°15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cove. These beautiful surroundings, in the heart of Singapore’s yachting hub, offer the perfect setting to enjoy the world of luxury yachting.  For those looking to explore the idea of owning a yacht, why not consider a charter on a yacht to really get a feel for what the world of superyachts entails? Charter is well established as the best introduction to yachting and as an entry point to ownership. A meeting with one of the Show’s exhibiting brokers should be your first point of call if you are considering charter or buying a yacht of your own.

Choosing the right type of yacht - for purchase or charter

Whether for charter or purchase, a key point of consideration is whether to go for a sailing yacht or a motoryacht. Sailing yachts are growing in numbers, but motoryachts are still the most popular option. When making a decision there are lots of points to consider: motoryachts make for a spacious entertainment platform, with plenty of speed and power, whereas sailing yachts appeal more to those looking for a purer form of yachting, with a wide range and peaceful cruising. Size is another choice, and every type of boat is catered for at the Show, whether it is a smaller day boat for coastal cruising or a superyacht.

Options for design and style are endless, and the Show offers a range of the world’s best builders and designers able to advise on the best yacht to suit your lifestyle. Big names like Sunseeker, one of Asia’s most popular yachting brands, will be exhibiting along with other popular builders including Princess Yachts, Westport and Palmer Johnson.

Premium Nautical is a first time exhibitor to the Singapore Yacht Show and will be able to speak with guests about the eight luxury boat brands they represent in Singapore. As with many of the exhibitors, they have diverse experience in sailing boats, catamarans, motor boats and yachts as well as brokerage services for those selling a boat in preparation for their new vessel.

The jewel in the crown's fleet

The jewel in the fleet’s crown is the spectacular 57.5m sailing yacht Twizzle,
built by Dutch yard Royal Huisman in 2010.
With an impressive fleet of yachts on display at the Show there will be plenty of options for visitors to look at as food for thought. The jewel in the fleet’s crown is the spectacular 57.5m sailing yacht Twizzle, built by Dutch yard Royal Huisman in 2010. As one of the biggest yacht registered to exhibit so far, Twizzle is not to be missed and is sure to turn heads. Available for charter around Asia, she could be the perfect option for those considering charter for the first time.

Of course, there is plenty on offer for those who are well established in yachting as well. Whether you are considering a new purchase or an upgrade, or just want to discuss the latest designs and innovations or speak with the industry’s leading players, the event should be firmly in your diary.

Partnering this yachting spectacular is a complimentary range of bespoke products including private jets, jewellery, art and high-end properties. Together they offer an unsurpassed showcase of the world of luxury.

Malaysia and Indonesia by boat

Many do not consider Malaysia as a boat or yacht holiday destination but actually this country offers great places to enjoy yacht cruises. Take for example Johor and its neighbour Pahang. There are nine tropical islands on the east coast of these Malaysian states, stretching from Pulau Sibu from south to Pulau Tioman to the north and Pulau Aur to the east. The most well known, developed and the largest island of them is Pulau Tioman. It has a marina and a runway and is a great weekend escape destination from Singapore and Malaysia. Pulau Sibu, Pulau Rawa and Pulau Tinngi are also popular for weekend holidays and can be accessed from Tanjung Leman by boat. Pulau Sibu is just 70 miles away from Singapore and can be easily accessed by a chartered boat from there.  Most of these islands have at least one small resort.

Pulau Aur
On the other side, Malacca Straits, George Town, Penang, Pulau Pangkor and Langkawi. To the north, Thailand starts with its more popular destinations like Phuket and Krabi.

Batam, Indonesia is located just 26 kilometers south of Singapore and can easily be accessed by boat. The area is great with its crystal clear waters and beaches and many places for snorkelling and skuba diving. To the south of Batam and Bintan, there is an island called Riaus which is less developed compared to its northern neigbours.

Luxury Yacht Cruises around Singapore

Today in Boat Asia 2011 show, I have had a chance to see Lloyd Marine's new catamaran "ELYSIUM". ELYSIUM is a Lagoon 450 catamaran and is used for luxury yacht charter in Singapore for island get-aways to the Riau Islands, Indonesia, East Coast Malaysian islands such as Pulau Sibu, Rawa and Tioman, and Langkawi and Phuket to the west.

Most of the people thinks a rich man with his family cruising around for several thousands per day when they hear luxury yacht charter. Actually luxury boats can be rented as a group to have a different holiday or occasion experience and are not within only the reach of the rich. A luxury boat can be well chartered for a day or evening trip to celebrate an event, to have party or company gathering. For example ASHA from the same company, a 48 foot catamaran, can accommodate up to 25 people and can be rented for 1,900 SGD for an evening. Adding the 300 SGD for crew (needed for a trip more than 20 people) and 35 SGD fuel charge for a 5 hours journey, this will translate into just 90 SGD per person for 25 people. If you are looking for an alternative venue for a party, celebration or company event, this can be a very good experience. For those who can afford, a yacht is definitely a great place to have solemnization party. The only problem I can see is that Singapore waters, especially the south waters, are infested with commercial ships and all you can see as a view are ships and large refineries. It really is tiring to look at them from east coast and Sentosa, it probably is also tiring from on board.

But a real experience of yacht charter from Singapore, in my opinion, is a multi night cruise from Singapore to the Malaysian and Indonesian islands. There are nine islands of the east coast of Johor and Pahang, stretching from Pulau Sibu in the south to Pulau Tioman in the north. Pulau Sibu especially is around 70 miles away from Singapore so it is easily accessible from Singapore by boat. A trip of this kind is expensive but these boats can accommodate 4 couples and when chartered as a group, it would cost around 600 - 700 SGD per night. A bit expensive but still within reach of many for an alternative holiday.

You can frequently find cheap yacht charter deals in deal site. This one for exampleoffers
for 4 Hours Yacht Charter & Cruise for up to 10 Pax for only $388 (71% OFF!)

In my homeland country, Turkey, it is very common to hire a boat to celebrate an event or just to travel as a group. There are cheap options as well as luxury ones. So it is not uncommon to see a large boat full of 200+ people accommodating a wedding in Bosporus or a small one full of 10 people on a week holiday through Turkish Riviera. Currently I can see that Singapore is still in the early stages of boating fun and options are limited and in the expensive region. Still these options are more accessible then you usually think.

Singapore Yacht Show April 2011

As Singapore realizes the yacht tourism potentials of this small island state, especially after opening of two integrated resorts and their casinos, Singaporeans are also increasingly interested in owning a yacht. You can see this in the memberships of Singapore marinas and their collective construction race to add more berthing capacity to their premises. Take One 15 Marina at Sentosa Cove. This top end luxurious marina was charging 24,000 Singapore Dollars for membership when it started to recruit members in 2005 but the demand pushed this up to 61,000 Singapore Dollars.

Increased interest in yachts, increase wealth of Asians and increased realization of yacht sellers that they need new markets presented a luxury yacht show to Singapore. Singapore Yacht Show will be held between 8-10 April 2011 in ONE 15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cove. This is not a normal yacht exhibition, this is a superyacht exhibition which will be only open to those who are invited.Thos who are not familiar with boats, yachts also have their classes; your ordinary(!) yacht, superyacht and megayacht.

Some signature yachts will be anchored to ONE 15 during the event. SY Montigne, 57-metre sailing
schooner and one of the world’s largest sailing yachts available for charter will be in Singapore. Actually this luxury motorsailor will be based in South East Asia in 2011.This is a very young yacht, built in 2009 and will carry a price tag of 16,500,000 Euro. This elegant superyacht is heir to the famous 50 meter SY Galileo. She belongs to Aegean Yacht and is the largest superyacht of its class built in Turkey, one of the top 10 yacht producing countries in the world.

SY Montigne superyacht

Another signature superyacht of the show is the 33-metre MY Nymphaea. This superyacht went to an 8 month major refit which was completed at the end of 2009 and the yacht is now chartering local Thai and Malay waters. Nymphaea (Water Lily) was built in 1984 by the famous Broward Marine shipyard in Florida to the highest standard of seaworthiness, luxury, and comfort. She will be based in Singapore, and will be available for private charter in the Andaman Sea all year round and is one of the few yachts of her pedigree, size and comfort dedicated to luxury charter in the region.

MY Nymphaea - Source: yachtsolutions

SY El Aleph a 37-metre traditional Phinisi sailing yacht which will make its debut at the show. This unique yacht from Konjo Boat builders of Tana Beru Village, Indonesia has not been seen at any other show in the world:

EL ALEPH is probably the newest and most spacious traditional sailing yacht available for charter in the exotic Indonesian archipelago. Broad-beamed and well-ballasted, she offers unmatched stability and comfort. No detail has been left to chance in ensuring the utmost comfort, safety and enjoyment in some of the most exciting and less explored parts of the world.
The combination of traditional Phinisi design and 21st century technology in EL ALEPH makes her a totally unique luxury yacht. Beautifully handcrafted in 100-year old teak and ironwood, and finished by the finest cabinetmakers in Bali (who spent more than 200,000 man-hours on the final fit-out!) the attention to detail is unmatched by any other Phinisi schooner ever built.
EL ALEPH offers every modern convenience, from individually controlled air-conditioned cabins to satellite communications. Also, unique among such traditional boats, EL ALEPH has quiet boat mode where she can cruise for prolonged periods under electrical power with all her engines shut down.
A charter on EL ALEPH is a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating Indonesian archipelago and beyond, to Thailand, Burma and the Andaman islands in total luxury and privacy. Whether diving in some of the world's richest coral reefs, climbing smoking volcanoes, anchoring in secluded lagoons, or experiencing the fascinating cultural and natural diversity of villages and islands rarely seen by outsiders, EL ALEPH offers the ultimate escape.

SY El Alep - Source: charterworld.com
The show will be full of yacht builders, brokers as well as some luxurious automobile brands like Rolls Royce and BMW to complement the show. It is sad there is no public date, I definitely would like to see SY Al Alep, it looks very interesting. Maybe if you are on the south shores of Singapore you can get a glimpse of these luxurious ladies sailing elegantly along Singapore coast.
