Kuala Lumpur - Singapore High Speed Rail is a planned project to link Singapore and Kuala Lumpur which is planned to be completed in 2020. The project is announced in September 2010 by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib. Singapore and Malaysia have officially agreed to build a high-speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by 2020 at a meeting between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak in Singapore on February 19, 2013.[1]
According to investvine.com [1], high speed trains between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will run over 250 km/hour speed with an average speed of 350 to 450 km/hour.
The high speed rail link will most likely have two train services : an express service which provides non-stop high-speed rail travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore terminus and a transit service which stops in cities.[4] Potential intercity stops between KL and Singapore would be (from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur) Singapore, Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat, Muar, Ayer Keroh (Melaka), Seremban, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Kuala Lumpur (KL).
The high speed rail stations in Singapore will probably be in either west or city center. In the west, Tuas West, Jurong East and Joo Koon are possible locations with a tunnel through the SAFTI Live Firing Area is required [2][3]. Another option is city center, Tanjong Pagar West or Marina Bay [3]. But according to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, city center locations will be more challenging to do because of the cost and land required (actually old KTM station in Tanjong Pagar and the KTM track land is an excellent option for the high-speed rail link isn't it?).
According to a feasibility study, Kuala Lumpur - Singapore High Speed Rail project costs would be between $ 2.5 billion to $ 3.7 billion, but rumours speak of a total cost of above $ 9 billion.[1] The express high-speed rail between KL and Singapore will be about 400 km and the travel time will be 90 minutes. Transit services (stopping in cities between KL and Singapore) is expected to cover the distance in 120 minutes.
Reducing travel time between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to just 90 minutes will be a game changer. Flights between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur takes only 45 minutes but adding the time spent in airports and travel to/from airports, it typical takes 4 hours. Typical bus travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore takes 6 hours.
High speed trains are proved to increase productivity by allowing people to spend less time on travel and more time on doing business and leisure. It also allows business people to work during the significant part of the journey.
