Anderson Silva left with broken leg at UFC 168

This Saturday's fight may have been the last time world witnessed 38-year-old legend Brazilian mixed martial artist Anderson Silva fighting in the arena.

On July 6 2013 Chris Weidman knocked out Anderson Silva to end Silva’s seven-year middleweight title reign at UFC 162. This was a rematch at UFC 168 but Anderson was unable to regain the title when his leg broke severely, after Weidman checked one of his leg kicks in the second round.

1 minute 16 seconds into the second round, Chris Weidman checked a left leg kick by Anderson Silva with his right knee. Silva immediately fell to the ground in pain. Referee Herb Dean soon ended to the fight. Silva's shinbone snapping from the force of the collision can be seen in replay videos.
“He literally went from here straight to surgery,” said UFC president Dana White during the UFC 168 post-fight press conference.

Silva, the Brazilian icon of the MMA, holds the longest title defense streak in UFC history, which ended in July 2013 with 16 consecutive wins and 10 title defenses. This was the first time Silva has lost consecutive fights. Silva is widely regarded as the greatest fighter in UFC history.

According to USA Today, Silva is recovering from the broken leg:

Anderson Silva remained in a Las Vegas hospital Sunday morning following successful surgery to repair a broken leg he suffered trying to regain the UFC's middleweight title. Following Silva's surgery, the UFC issued a statement that said UFC orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Sanders had repaired Silva's broken left tibia as well as stabilized his broken left fibula. The UFC estimated his recovery time to be as long as six months.

Here is from UFC statement:

"Following Saturday evening's UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC's orthopedic surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson's left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months. Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover."

This isn't 100 percent the end of Anderson Silva's fighting career -- but it should be, writes Brett Okamoto.

Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2014

Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2014 (MBSC) will usher in the New Year with an eight-minute fireworks display, 20,000 wishing spheres set afloat on Marina Bay, and a 40-second LED countdown display on the façade of the Ocean Financial Centre – a first for the countdown.

Jointly presented by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) for the ninth year, Singaporeans will be brought together by music, film and fireworks based on the theme Beautiful Life.

Fireworks by the Bay; LED Countdown
As a new feature for the countdown, the Ocean Financial Centre façade will light up in a specially designed LED countdown display. This will begin 40 seconds before midnight, ending in a 10-second countdown to the New Year. This will be followed by an eight-minute display of fireworks launched in a five-pronged formation representing intertwined lives. The play of colours and water illustrates the beauty of life.
This year, Esplanade has selected fireworks music first presented at the 2011 countdown. In turns rousing, contemplative, dramatic and delicate, the music reflects the evening‟s theme: Beautiful Life. Its range of musical motifs also reflects the cultural diversity of the country.

Mr Benson Puah, CEO, The Esplanade Co Ltd, said: “A Beautiful Life is not just about how good we wish our lives to be but also the memories that make us who we are. These little treasures of memories, of things beautifully familiar, put a smile in our hearts. In this age of throwaway lifestyles, it is perhaps meaningful that we remember some of the wonderful music that has so moved us. We have selected a powerfully evocative and memorable piece of music by Iskandar Ismail who probably writes the most beautiful music each year for our countdown fireworks. This piece was first performed at the 2011 countdown. Like life‟s most precious moments, great music like this is meant to be savoured, relived, and celebrated.”
Performed by young Singapore artists, Rit Xu (dizi), Yang Jiwei (sheng) and Yvonne Tay (guzheng), alongside established musicians such as Adam Lee (guitar), Mike Chiang (erhu) and Lazar Sebastien (Indian violin), the music will be broadcast „live‟ on MediaCorp radio station Symphony 92.4FM. The public can watch the fireworks „live‟ on Channel NewsAsia and MediaCorp Channels 5 and 8 or enjoy them from the
various vantage points around the Bay.
Mr Ng Lang, CEO, Urban Redevelopment Authority, said: “The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown has now firmly established itself as the event for the community to celebrate the start of the new year. Each year, we have a team who works very hard to line up activities to make the event better than the previous one.
However, what ultimately makes the event truly successful is the support of the community, and we hope to see more people at the Bay this year to usher in the new year with us.”

Wishing Spheres: Reflecting Singapore’s Hopes, Wishes and Dreams
Every year, more than 500,000 Singapore residents and visitors pen their wishes, hopes and dreams on spheres that are set afloat in the Bay. For the first time, these will include wishes from overseas Singaporeans who wrote their wishes during Singapore Day in Sydney, Australia, in October. The first spheres were launched into the Bay in late November and 20,000 of these will be lit from 26 December, transforming the bay into an eye-catching visual arts display.
Students from Nanyang Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic have set up wishing stations on their campuses to encourage their peers to pen their wishes. From 29 November, the public can look out for several wishing stations across the island – from malls and libraries to parks. This year, new wishing stations have been added such as at Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay.

Esplanade staff have also brought wishing spheres to 10 Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs), reaching out to more than 180 people. These include elderly and youths, who might not be able to visit the wishing stations on their own.

Performances and Short Films
The evening will feature a series of free performances as well as a specially-commissioned short film by Singaporean director Kelvin Sng. The film features a child‟s view of the simple joys of life, such as the beauty of time spent with loved ones and friends. Complementing the film are interviews with individuals who will share their interpretation of what a “beautiful life” means to them.
Free performances will begin at 6.15pm at the Esplanade Concourse. “The Singing Chef” Irene Jansen and her friends will kick off the evening‟s performances with a heartfelt musical performance that celebrates friendship and gratitude. At the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre, host Vivien Tan will take the audience on a musical journey that calls to mind life‟s beautiful moments. Cat Ong and Sheila De Niro will bring their powerful vocal harmonies to the stage and bubbly personalities from local band Singapore Char Siew Baos will perform lively tunes past midnight.

There will also be a free outdoor music extravaganza at The Promontory @ Marina Bay from 6pm till 1.30am, featuring local acts such as Juz-B, Chriz Tong and Queen Inc. featuring Sylvester Sim. Other international and regional artists include German DJ Ronski Speed, Malaysian singer-songwriter Namewee and Filipino rock band Rivermaya.
Early revelers can visit the waterfront promenade and browse the various items on sale at the Marina Waterfront Bazaar or grab some light refreshments from Downtown Bites.

Tips to save money in Bangkok holiday

Tip #1 - Book your hotel online
Bangkok offers relatively cheap hotels but still the rack rates at the desk are usually much higher than the online rates. But do not just directly go and book from hotel's web site. The rates on hotel web sites are also usually higher than the rates you can find online.

Many people book from an online reservation site like booking.com or hotel.com. From time to time one is cheaper than the others and sometimes hotel's web site offer the best. So do you need to spend hours to find the best hotel rate? Of course not. Just use a hotel meta-search engine like hotelscombined.com. Hotelscombined aggregates all the rates and hotel reviews from almost all major online reservation sites and let's you to see the best rate in a single list. Use it to save money.

Tip #2 - Stay in a hotel near BTS Skytrain or MRT Line
Bangkok's traffic is quite bad and you will do a big favour to yourself if you stay in a hotel near sky train or MRT in Bangkok. This will allow you to travel 70% to 100% of the route between hotel and the Bangkok attractions by train which is cheap and fast compared to road transport. If you combine train with River boat and walk then you can go to most attractions without a taxi and tuk-tuk. This will also reduce your exposure to tuk-tuk and taxi scams in Bangkok

Tip #3 - Beware of Thailand Tourist Scams
We have said "scams", let's talk about them a little. Tourist scams can cost you a lot. Thailand, particularly Bangkok, is full of con artists and scammers praying on unsuspected visitors. Know then before you step into Bangkok. Here is a good introductory article in Bangkok and Thailand Tourist scams.

Tip #4 - Read Wikitravel Bangkok Pages
Web based free travel guide Wikitravel is a must read before heading to your holiday destination. Their Bangkok Guide pages are full of useful information from where to eat to where to sleep and from what to do to how to stay safe in Bangkok. This free guide saved me a lot of money in my trips and I strongly suggest it to you.

This info also can be bought as a pocket guide from Amazon : Wikitravel Bangkok: The free, complete, up-to-date and reliable guide to Bangkok.

Tip #5 - Use Airport City Link or Shuttle
Two of the most expensive taxi rides in Bangkok will be the one from and to the airport. But you can avoid these rides by using new Airport Rail Link from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. If you have listened to us and booked a hotel near Skytrain, you can reach your hotel without a taxi. If you arrive Bangkok during rush hour you will also save a lot of money. And if you need to go to the airport during the rush hour, you can prevent missing a flight because of traffic.

There were once Private Airport Express buses but they have stopped operating in 2011. You can still take a free shuttle bus from outside the second floor, gate 5 to the Public Transportation Center a few kilometres away and then take a public bus from there. Read Wikitravel Bangkok Get In section for details.

Bangkok in the night
Bangkok in the night
Tip #6 - Bargain and bargain
Most shops will start bargain from 100% or 200% above the usual price so start bargain from 50% of the asking price and try to settle somewhere between 50% and 60%.

Tip #7 - Visit Bangkok in Low Season
The most pleasant time to visit is the cool season that lasts from November till February. This is also the high season for Bangkok. Try to visit outside this time and you can get things like hotel rooms for much cheaper. Also avoid regional holiday times such as Hari Raya during when people travel to Bangkok a lot.

Tip #8 - Buy Thai Telephone Card from Airport
This is quite important. Most Thais have mobile phones so it is difficult to find public phones in Bangkok. Roaming may be quite expensive so buy a local SIM card for 100 baht at Suvarnabhumi Airport. This simple action can save you a lot of money (i.e. if your taxi driver does not know the way to hotel you can call the reception and let the receptionist talk to the driver).

Tip #9 - Bangkok City Pass
Bangkok city pass, which comes with unlimited use of sky train, may save you money if you will visit a lot of attractions.

Tip #10 - Check the Travel DEALs
If you are heading to Bangkok from a nearby country like Singapore check coupon sites for Bangkok travel deals. They do not have only Bangkok tour packages but they also list discounts to Bangkok attractions.

Tip #11 - Buy travel insurance
Thailand may be a relatively cheap place when it comes to almost everything but a major hospitalization or evacuation from a remote location may cost you tens of thousands of Dollars. Never travel out of your country without a proper travel insurance covering activities you are planning to do (i.e. skuba diving).

Hotel Mermaid Bangkok Review

A few months ago, a friend of mine visited Singapore and Thailand and requested some hotel advices in Bangkok and Phuket. In my last visit I have stayed in Aloft Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 Hotel (near Nana BTS Skytrain Station) and I was quite happy with it. So I have recommended this hotel. She has later decided to book another hotel named Hotel Mermaid Bangkok.

Hotel Mermaid Bangkok is a relatively new hotel in Bangkok. With its 69 guestrooms, pool, 24-hour front desk, helpful staff and renowed Captain's Pub and Restaurant, the hotel is conveniently located on Sukhumvit Soi 29 (50 meters off Sukhumvit Road), 10 minutes walk from BTS Asok Skytrain Station. Hotel Mermaid Bangkok is also quite near Terminal 21 shopping mall.

Here is her review:

It was a sudden decision to go to Bangkok, Thailand. I have made all of my reservations and arrangements through the Internet. I searched many Bangkok hotel options online and I have decided to stay at Hotel Mermaid Bangkok. I stayed at Hotel Mermaid Bangkok for two days. Without any previous information, I would say that it was definitely a good selection. Hotel Mermaid Bangkok, located in Sukhumvit, Bangkok, is a popular choice for travelers. It offers 69 guestrooms designed to meet the needs of customers. Moreover, it was a nice boutique hotel with a great staff and convenient location. Staff welcomes you very warmly.

Actually, Hotel Mermaid Bangkok has been inaugurated by His Royal Highness Prince Henrik, The Prince Consort of Denmark. The Hotel Mermaid Bangkok is also home to well renowned Captain’s Pub & Restaurant. The hotel has modern air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi internet service is good. The hotel also has a pool, a 24-hour front desk and an on-site tour desk.

Five best things about Hotel Mermaid Bangkok

First, the hotel is only 3. Km from the city center. Hotel Mermaid Bangkok is centrally located hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 29. The hotel is around 50 meter slightly off the Sukhumvit Road which is an exclusive district popular among expatriates and upper class locals. Sukhumvit is home to fancy apartments, villas, restaurants, bars and clubs. Sukhumvit Road is not only one of the longest boulevards in Thailand, but one of the longest boulevards in the world. You may go to Sukhumvit Road by walking from the Hotel Mermaid Bangkok.

Second, The transportation to and from the hotel was very convenient. The hotel’s strategic location provides that guests can quickly and easily reach many local points of interest. For example, Hotel Mermaid Bangkok is around 10 minutes walk from the BTS Asok Station (0.6 Km). It is centrally located and very near to BTS and MRT lines. Using MRT lines, it was very easy to visit major touristic attractions including the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Furthermore, Suvarnabhumi Airport international airport is a 1-hour distant from the hotel.

Third, the hotel room together with its bathroom is very clean. Furthermore, all of the rooms are designed with artwork and colored walls. Thus, it offers an elegantly relaxing ambiance.

Fourth, the hotel is very near to Terminal 21 Shopping Mall. This mall presents some of the best shopping with hundreds of funky boutiques under one roof.  Please be prepared and do not be surprised you may see your hometown city at Terminal 21 Mall since floors themed around some of the coolest cities in the world. Each floor has a different focus.

And fifth, as I mentioned previously, the staff service was excellent. I requested a late check out and many thanks to staff it was granted. They were very helpful and nice.

Final note to mention, the price is very reasonable. Actually it is great hotel choice for those travelling.

Singapore Escort Services Launches Mobile Classifieds Service in Singapore

Companies publishes press releases to advertise their products and to share news with potential customers. There are several avenues to do this on the web and one of them is prweb.com. I have just seen an interesting press release recently in prweb.com: Now there is a mobile app which should not be seen by your wife. An escort news and escort agency classified in Singapore has released a mobile app for escorts as well as their potential clients easily meet.

With the launch of Singapore Escort Services’ new mobile classifieds platform, social escorts can now look forward to building more awareness about their services both on computers and users mobile phone. Mobile phone users will be able to select the most suitable escort by physical appearance, body type and even spoken language that they are looking for in addition to many other attributes they may find important to them.

In their web site Singapore-Escort-Services.com mentions that they do not take a cut of the escort’s earnings as commission nor do they promote sexual services. Singapore Escort Services is an online classifieds directory that allows both male and female escorts in Singapore to list their services.

According to a senior manager named John at Sexy Ladies Escort Agency social escorts are not prostitutes. "The main bulk of clients are foreign professionals, senior managers, C-class executives and wealthy businessmen who want social escorts to accompany them to social events, corporate meetings or casino games at one of Singapore's integrated resorts at Marina Bay or Sentosa."

Good looking is a must, but It is not sufficient to be just good looking. A successful social escort, both female and male escorts have to familiarize themselves with local culture and places of attractions so that they can double up as personal tour guide for their high-net-worth and well-travelled clients.

Visitors to the mobile phone version of Singapore-Escort-Services.com can filter social escorts through a list of criteria describing his or her dream social escort. Upon completing his search, the visitor will get a call or an email (whichever he/she prefer) within the same day from the social escort.

"Good and high-end social escorts across the world, continues to be in demand as Singapore is increasingly promoted and seen as a high-end luxury lifestyle location for wealthy individuals, in the ranks of Monte Carlo in Las Vegas. These affluent travellers want more than a romp in Geylang, they want an escort who can communicate and engage them intellectually," says Dominic, Manager at Singapore Social Escort Services.

First cat cafe in Singapore opens on Christmas Day

I love cats and had at least one at any time when i was a kid. University was full of them but work and apartment life took these companions out of my life. Sometimes I miss to play with one for a while especially when watching TV on the couch. And by tomorrow there will be a place full of cats in Singapore to play with.

Singapore's first cat cafe, Neko no Niwa (Japanese for "cat garden"), ipens its doors tomorrow on Christmas Day. Located at 54A Boat Quay the cat cafe offers a therapeutic experience full of cats. There are 13 rescued and adopted cats in Neko no Niwa where they can eat and play.

Cat cafe does not mean that you can take your own cat there. To prevent cat fights they are not allowed into "Cat Garden".

The cafe will host 25 customers at any one time and you will need to pay 12 SGD for the first hour of interacting with cats and 5 SGD for subsequent half hour blocks.

The strays were lovely — beautifully-groomed and relatively approachable.Their drinks (think coffee and tea) and desserts are reasonably-priced at $2 — 5.50 — they don't sell savouries so you don't end up in a cat fight (heh) over the cod. Great location, too, and with the WiFi and board games, it can get pretty homey. Read more at Hot or Not? Neko No Niwa cat cafe at Boat Quay

6 - Taiwan
7 - Bintan

9 - Krabi
10 - Penang

Downtown Line Stage 1 is up and running

A new announcement has greeted commuters in some MRT stations today: "Change in this station for the Downtown Line." First 6 stages of this new Singapore MRT Line is now open: Bugis, Promenade, Bayfront, Downtown (connects the southern part of Marina Bay where developments such as The Sail @ Marina Bay and the Marina Bay Financial Centre lie to the current CBD), Telok Ayer and Chinatown. Official opening of Downtown Line is this Saturday.

Opening of the Downtown Line was not free of problems: a train fault disrupted servicefor about 15 minutes. The fault took place at around noon near Bayfront station, and delayed train service from Bugis to Chinatown.

The Downtown Line (DTL) is the fifth Mass Rapid Transit line in Singapore. The 6 stations opened yesterday were Stage 1. Stage 2 will be opened 2+ years later in 2016 and Stage 3 will be opened in 2017.

The Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE)

Singapore's tenth expressway, The Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE), will open to traffic from 9.00 am on Sunday, 29 December 2013. It will be the strategic east-west high capacity road link between Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), East Coast Parkway (ECP) and the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). Spanning 5 kilometers, some 3.6 kilometers of MCE underground and it has 420 meter long tunnel below the seabed, a first of its kind in Singapore.

A five-lane expressway in both directions, MCE will link motorists directly to the heart of the downtown at Marina South through the new connections with Central Boulevard, Marina Boulevard and Maxwell Road.

Road changes with the opening of The Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE)

The MCE will free up land space occupied by a portion of ECP now. The space is in Marina downtown area and is a prime land. The section of ECP to be removed is from Marina Boulevard to Prince Edwards Road. A stretch of ECP west of Benjamin Sheares Bridge will be converted to a major arterial road and will be renamed as Sheares Avenue. This will bring traffic from the ECP directly into Central Business District (CBD) and connect with Central Boulevard and Marina Boulevard.

Drivers will use Fort Road interchange to connect directly to MCE to travel to the city or to the west of Singapore. Existing connections to ECP towards city from the Fort Road will be removed due to insufficient distance for safe filtering into the expressway when the MCE opens.

To join the ECP further to east, drivers will have alternatives such as via Nicoll Highway or travel on East Coast Park Service Road to make u-turn.

Those using Ophir Road to get to Sheares Avenue will first have to enter the CBD before they can get to the MCE. Motorists exiting MCE to Central Boulevard and using Sheares Avenue to connect to the Rochar Road exit will also have to enter the CBD first.

Best Hotels in Singapore

Which are the best hotels in Singapore? If you look at different criteria, you will have different hotels in the list. One can think that it is best to look at online hotel reservation sites where hotel guest reviews can give you the best. But this will also create different lists because different online booking sites are popular among different user groups.

To create our best hotels in Singapore list, we have looked at hotelscombined.com, one of the most popular hotel meta-search engine in the world. A meta-search engine is a search engine which compiles results from different search engines. In this case hotelscombined.com compiles its results from popular online hotel reservation sites and allows its users to search and compare hotel rates in one search.

Hotelscombined also provides an aggregated summary of hotel reviews and ratings from external sites. These aggregated customer ratings are the ones we use to determine the best hotels in Singapore. We have included only the hotels with 9.0 or more rating and at list 250 user reviews (hotelscombined calls these hotels stellar hotels).

Below is not a ranking list but a group of outstanding Singapore hotels judged on guest reviews.

DJ Tenashar nude photo leak?

Last October, a blog named "Singapore Hall of Shame" has released a series of nude photos claimed to be belonging to a pre cosmetic surgery model turned DJ Tenashar. The blogger said that DJ Tenashar got angry that her nude photos were leaked. Later Google removed the photos from the blog (Singapore Hall of Shame is hosted on blogger which belongs to Google) because DJ Tenashar has complained to Google.

According to The Newpaper, the blogger, 39 years old businessman Michael Lim,  has came to know the alleged DJ Tenashar nude photos on October 29 after a reader has sent him a link to them:

"Mr. Lim said she told him that the naked photos are her personal property and claimed that the comissioned photographer sold them to a porn site. He also posted screengrabs of a purpoted exchange on Facebook between him and Tenashar, using her real name Debbie Valerie Long, in which she implored him to take down the pictures. It was during this exchange that Tenashar appearently admitted that the pictures were here."[1]

Although Google removed the photos from the blogger site, Singapore Hall of Shame post still has some directions to find the original page of them. In that page there is a set of nude photos of a young Chinese woman resembling Tenashar on the beach.

Debbie Valerie Long or better known by her stage name as DJ Tenashar is a famous DJ model. She was born and brought up in Singapore by a Eurasian father and a Chinese mother, but has lived most of their years in Spain and Europe. After spending most of her early modeling days in Europe, this FHM Cover Girl is now back and based in Singapore to work as a full time model in Asia.

Phnom Penh hotel deals by Agoda

For a long time after Phnom Penh’s near-desertion in the wake of the Vietnam War and overthrow of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, it was often called the “Wild West of Asia.” Thankfully over the past few decades, great strides have been made in making the city one of the region’s more livable, enjoyable, and culturally rich destinations.

Legend says the city was founded in 1372 when a woman named Penh built a temple on a hill (phnom, in the Khmer language) to house several statues of the Buddha that she found. From there, the city’s fortunes waxed and waned as various conflicts and colonial interests shaped the region, until it was finally declared Cambodia’s capital in 1866. From 1867 until its independence in 1953, Cambodia was under French rule, which is still evident from some of the architecture in the city, although only several good examples remain.

Today Phnom Penh is a vibrant, energetic city, and the feeling of a place coming out of a long slumber is palpable. New hotels and shopping malls are being built, old structures are being restored, and hip, new restaurants are turning up in all corners of the city. That being said, it still lags far behind other Asian cities like Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City, so manage expectations when it comes to medical, transport, financial and communications infrastructure.

You can also learn about some of the darker chapters of Cambodian history through the infamous Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, historical sites that detail the horrors of the occupation by the Khmer Rouge. Although they don’t make for a ‘fun’ outing, they are an important memorial to one of Cambodia’s most chilling periods, and are cherished for the important lessons contemporary visitors take away from the experience.

The energy from this city as it looks toward the future and the quality of the sites and attractions make it a worthwhile destination in and of itself no longer just a short stopover on the way to the Angkor ruins in Siem Reap. Some of the most popular sights are the Royal Palace, with the stunning Silver Pagoda and Temple of the Emerald Buddha; Sisowath Quay, the charming riverside stretch of road with great shopping and dining during the day, and a lively nighttime market atmosphere when things cool off at night; the comprehensive National Museum; and plenty of temples, markets, and friendly locals eager to share their city with visitors.
