Tonight MediaCorp Channel 5 is bringing Pandora to your home: James Cameron's 3D epic Avatar will be on air in 2 parts: 7:15pm (Part 1) & 10pm (Part 2). The lineup tonight (December 16th 2012) will exactly be as below:
07:15 pm : Movie Event: Avatar (PG)(CH5 Premiere)(Part 1)
09:30 pm : News 5 Tonight
10:00 pm : Movie Event: Avatar (PG)(CH5 Premiere)(Part 2)
11:00 pm : Asia’s Next Top Model
12:00 am : 30 Rock 3 (PG)
I really liked this movie when it was screened in theaters back in 2009. I liked it not only because of its 3D effects and highly successful depiction of an alien planet, Pandora, but because of its subtext. The movie is 22nd-century version of the colonists vs. natives which took place when New World was discovered. James Cameron also later acknowledged that Avatar implicitly criticizes the United States' role in the Iraq War and the impersonal nature of mechanized warfare in general. In reference to the use of the term shock and awe in the film, Cameron said, "We know what it feels like to launch the missiles. We don't know what it feels like for them to land on our home soil, not in America."
This is a valuable movie because it is one of the few which depicts humans as villains in an alien encounter (another one is District 9 which is, in my opinion, a much better movie than Avatar).

Rare movie event in MediaCorp Channel 5: Instead of an old movie as usual, relatively rare gem, Avatar, will be on air tonight. (note: pay attention to the guy at the bottom-right corner (Noose)) |
