End of the world December 21 2012 as Mayan Calendar expires?

While doomsday preppers are getting ready for the end of the world on 12 12 21 everywhere on the planet including in Singapore, NASA is so sure the world won't come to an end, they have released an article on their web site titled: why the world didn't end yesterday? "If you're reading this story, it means one thing:  The World Didn't End Yesterday." wrote NASA in the news piece which was dated as December 22nd 2012.

Mayan calendar ends on December 21 2012 which is interpreted by some as the end of the world. By the way, the end of the world will be at 12 12 21 18:10 PM by Singapore time. On the other hand NASA takes time to explain that there is no rouge planet, asteroid, sun flare, etc. in sight to destroy the earth. In fact, Dec. 21, 2012 did not mean the end of the world for Mayans, it was an important date but not the end of the world:
According to Maya theology, the world was created 5125 years ago, on a date modern people would write "August 11, 3114  BC."  At the time, the Maya calendar looked like this: 13.0.0.0.0
On Dec. 21, 2012, it is exactly the same: 13.0.0.0.0
In the language of Maya scholars, 13 Bak'tuns or 13 times 144,000 days elapsed between the two dates.   This was a significant interval in Maya theology, but, stresses Carlson, not a destructive one.  None of the thousands of ruins, tablets, and standing stones that archeologists have examined foretell an end of the world.

But at the end of the article, NASA says if we could time warp a Maya to the present day, they would say that Dec. 21, 2012, is a very important date.  Many Maya believed that their gods who created the world 5125 years ago would return.  One of them in particular, an enigmatic deity named Bolon Yokte' K'uh, would conduct old rites of passage, to set space and time in order, and to regenerate the cosmos."

Well then if you are a hardcore Erich von Däniken believer there is no comfort in this paragraph: For you December 21st 2012 may well mean the day they come back to destroy to build back (Chariots of the Gods?) :(
